  1. Jim Hoey says howdey. / ninja'd while I was struggling with the image search
  2. That's Smalley doing the color commentary, right? I don't think I've heard many of his games, but I'm liking his insights. He's made a couple of prescient observations this inning.
  3. 2021. They may be accepting waiting-list applications now.
  4. By now, the Royals can get fooled and stick the bat out there on a pitch far outside, and wind up with an infield single anyway. Geesh.
  5. He got away with that lack of sharpness/command/control in the minors, but the major leaguers are punishing him. He goes back to AAA in 2019 with hopefully a good idea of what he needs to work on. I think there's something for a coach to work with, but it might involve a fairly major rebuilding of his entire approach, something along the lines of repeatable mechanics for better control - I'm no coach so I'm just making stuff up now.
  6. Remember how he went 5-for-5 the other day? Less mentioned was that he scored just ONE run, and had a big fat ZERO RBI. Talk about selfish padding of one's stats. I'm very unimpressed.
  7. Nonsense. Twins Daily had a lively Vikings forum area in 1987 and 1991, too. / What's that you say? The Internet didn't exist then? Well, the discussion must have been on ARPANET or one a them other contraptions. I was there, I tell ya. I seen things. I SEEN things, man.
  8. Even at 4 chances per game, the majority of those plays in CF are routine too. The analogy on offense would be something closer to pitches faced, not PA - a substantial percentage of pitches are also routine - either let them go because they aren't close to strikes or else take a swing - in any case the batter has a huge number more of chances to contribute than the fielder.
  9. I believe it was the quality of the facilities that were at issue, and the Twins shopped around.
  10. The above picture was a Pirates game, but maybe I should have put this in the Sports Bar.
  11. Four score and seven days ago, Alex Kiriloff brought forth 1-for-5, with a double and an RBI. Now we are engaged in a great playoff series, testing whether that player can long endure. The smart money says he shall not perish from the earth.
  12. The game Out Of the Park Baseball has days of ML service time in its database, although I don't know of a way to do a study along the lines suggested, using their interface. They probably get this data from the same source where they get their scouting data, but that may be proprietary and not widely available online.
  13. Bet those rubes in Beloit wish they'd tried a little harder to maintain a working relationship with the Twins organization back when they had a chance, huh? / Just trying a little single-A trash talk....
  14. I wonder if Max Murphy is earning himself another look by the Twins, based on his good season with the Saints.
  15. What's the tell? Besides that lips are moving, I mean.
  16. The difference being that Motter was not even eligible to be called up on Sept 1, since he had already been released by the organization on August 22.
  17. Jake Cave Lite. Mission accomplished. Have the Twins send my usual consulting fee* to my usual address**. * zero dollars ** /dev/null
  18. Not much disagreement there. Tactics like the Opener are very much second-order effects. I'd trade that for having a pitching staff with ERAs* all in the 3's or 2's, instead of 4's and 5's and (*gulp*) higher. Just draw straws, and go get 'em. * Or FIPs, if you will
  19. If I can gull the opposing manager into putting his best 3 hitters at 7-8-9. while my stud Opener carves through the weaker hitters at the top of his modified lineup in inning 1, thus also giving the most PA in the game to those guys as the game progresses, I consider that a strategic win. Extra sweet will be the occasional game when my eventual pitchers in inning 8 and 9 gets exactly the first 6 batters in the lineup out, leaving #7 langushing in the on-deck circle at game's end. Because, you know, those 6 other guys soaked up the extra PA.
  20. They kind of do, currently. Your 40-man roster is in principle what you have to work with in a season. But league rules have minimum stays, once a player is sent to the minors, so you can't just yoyo the 25-man roster up and down at will. AAA rosters are limited in number as well, and probably their managers tear their hair out with being short-handed, what with someone being sent down in favor of a fresh arm, meaning that that guy can't pitch for a couple of days (or else the majors would have kept him), and with another guy you've been told is coming up to the majors so don't use him tonight or tomorrow either. It can be done, and is, but requires a lot more juggling than is at first apparent, IMO.
  21. What's your working theory as to where those 4 first-inning runs came from? Was it May's ineptitude? Or was it the Astros batters coming out on-fire? Because, if you're suggesting an alternate-universe, I have a plausible scenario to offer for a Stewart start, in either case. Hint: Trevor May still features prominently in one of them, and Stewart doesn't get a W in either of them. Or, maybe you have a way to foretell that this wasn't the day to bring Trevor May into the game at all. In that case, Oliver Drake's actual 7th inning offers a guide as to how long that a 1-0 lead would have lasted after Stewart's start. We also didn't get the opportunity to find out what a bottom-of-the-9th would have been like, and what creative way would have been found to louse that one up. I'm taking nothing away from Stewart's (actual) fine outing, of course.
  22. Good, then we're in agreement as to why you want one of your best arms in there.
  23. The evolution has been to sacrifice some contact in exchange for better launch angle and a higher payoff as a result.
