  1. We all need to click Like on this blog post of Brock's so that he can keep the prize he so clearly esteems.
  2. Did they change how Rule 5 works? I thought the drafting team paid a price, and then if they don't want to keep him they offer him back for half price, assuming he clears waivers.
  3. Dunno how long he can continue to play the youth card. The "young man" turns 30 next month.
  4. WPA pays no attention to defensive contributions, so for a player like Simmons it's not surprising if WAR and WPA differ greatly. Between the two, I would rely less on WPA for assessing "value". However looking at Simmons's two values in conjunction helps suggest the limits of what a good glove alone can contribute. For the list of five, I'd go with Colome, Cave, Shoemaker, Astudillo and Happ in some order - is it really important to rank them, with 2 gone and 3 more who should be absent next spring?
  5. I watched him a couple of times when Rochester visited Pawtucket. At SS he had a knack for making the two tough plays he was given look difficult. Perhaps he has improved in the past two years. I'm no scout, and if you mistrust the opinion of professionals who have seen him more frequently and more recently, maybe you'll find my amateur POV persuasive. If the Twins don't think he has improved, I won't demand to see him at SS again with my own eyes. IMO Gordon at SS *is* out of position.
  6. When I started collecting in the sixties, the draw was the fun of potentially collecting the whole set. The draw today is asset appreciation. I don't think that would have drawn 10-year old ashbury in, but I could be wrong.
  7. Opening Day will be pitched by whichever pitcher among the starters on the roster has the most MLB service time. Possibly Pineda if they re-sign him. Otherwise someone new they sign. Not Ober, not Dobnak, not Ryan. Hopefully they sign someone good, and not another Shoemaker caliber arm.
  8. Don't forget to light the paper bag on fire first.
  9. I believe Falvey's relative youth played a role in his hiring, and then likewise with Levine. The point of hiring youth versus a retread is that there is the potential for growth. I'm not impressed with the results so far, but I expect that ownership will give this FO a lot more leeway to continue to improve, than I probably would. Replacing at the very top is an expensive proposition in multiple dimensions, versus letting the FO learn from mistakes. The key is whether they view anything as mistakes versus bad luck. I expect they talk a good game when reviewing results with ownership.
  10. So the plate umpire basically told both managers, "I'm calling a strike zone as wide as the Mississippi River. Tell your batters to be up there hacking"?

You'll get a lot of seeing-eye singles that way.
  12. Great trade! Remind me again, who'd we get? Yes yes, Alex "Injured Pitcher" Scherff.

Acquiring truly good pitching is going to be an "overpay" situation, whether free agency or trade or anything else. That's the fallacy of loading up with sure-thing bats - you have to bundle too much of that to translate it into pitching, but that is the fault of the metrics we're using to evaluate pitching versus batting. Package up Larnach and Arraez and low-minor-league corner bats and see how much of Miami's pitching you can get! (If they're foolish enough to answer your phone call.) Don't trade away catching, though.
  14. ... wanting to discuss the bullpen situation.
  15. Gleeman's stat/split is the mark of a so-so offense, not a strong one. A strong offense can not totally make up for bad pitching, but it would do better than this in those 6+ run games. If the Twins' pitching were of championship caliber, we'd be looking harder at the offense as the anchor holding them back from true contention. As it is, the team's record in 2021 has been a complete team effort.

If you were offered the GM job, did you take into account that you'd be replacing Thad Levine but would still report to Derek Falvey who would have to sign off on all your proposed moves?
  17. Pressly seems so different though. Much more lively fastball than those others, no?
  18. I'm sure there were those who voiced no opinion before or after, some only before, some only after, and a few who tried to have it both ways. I just don't see a reason to paint an entire fanbase with one brush.
  19. If it helps, our Twins have more wins than any other last-place MLB team this season.
  20. Is it possible these were different individuals doing the advocating and later the complaining?
  21. Judging by the laughter, they may have been imbibing on take 1, take 2, and take 3 before this.

Multiple sources confirm to Twins Daily that Twins Daily is getting out of the satire business, as real life has overtaken the venerable literary form. RandBalls Stu will be writing occasional editorial opinion pieces, and handling the Classified Ads desk, until a new opportunity presents itself..."
  23. You'd pay $15M a year for a guy you see as in decline? Deep pockets there.
  24. Has Jorge written back to say whether he accepts the apology or not?
  25. Cut it with a little water. Just a little though.
