  1. Which we've been saying for, what, three off-seasons now? That was the book on him when he was picked up off waivers. He has improved on that. Some.
  2. Disagree. Pressly may have had experience in the outfield as a high schooler, but he has concentrated on pitching for too long by now. We probably need another team to convince DeRosa to come back. Then we can trade Duensing for him.
  3. Entry to the Hall is by election, and the electors are actually given the following guidance by the Hall: 5. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played. (My emphasis added.) 4. You have to stay in shape, in a different way, to be ready to play the catcher position, and I don't know enough to guess how much of the wear and tear on a catcher comes from playing the games (with the recent emphasis on the risk of concussion) versus staying ready (boocoo crouching, etc), given that the aims of switching Mauer to first seem to be both to keep him in the lineup and potentially increase his already substantial effectiveness at the plate.
  5. Say, how about that Terry Ryan, as well? Is he any good? / spoiler alert - yes, I agree, please take further discussion of Hicks's merits, as opposed to him as an alternative to signing Morgan, to a better thread than this
  6. Either the numbers don't add up or I'm misunderstanding: Mike Pelfrey can earn an additional $3.5 million in incentives in 2014. ($150K @170,180IP; $200K @190IP; $500K @200IP) By contrast, the incentive numbers for Hughes just above do add up.
  7. Moderator's note: this bickering has gone on long enough. The thread was about Florimon's defense and the digression, if it has not run its course, needs to go to PM as TWO already suggested.
  8. MLBTR today throws cold water on the Twins making him an offer anyway. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/01/twins-notes-mauer-morgan-santana-rotation.html
  9. That's right. Terry, go right up to 'em. "I'm Masahiro Tanaka. Hiii."
  10. Trust me, wives are capable of locating the negatives to signing up at TD, as well.
  11. Hi. I'm looking for a gently moderated website where members don't try to adjust each others' behavior through veiled comments too much of the time. Any recommendations? The moderators here tend to be too heavy-handed in their satire.
  12. Amen to that. (Sometimes one gets tired of saying "concur".) On one hand, giving up that triple has different ramifications due to the on-base status when the guy comes in, and ideally you want your stat to reflect that. On the other hand, any pitcher worth his salt is going to *pitch* differently if he comes in with the bases loaded than if empty; one example that comes to mind is that he may stay away from his best breaking pitch in the dirt so as to not put that much pressure on his catcher to corral it if it gets away. "No single statistic" is going to capture that very easily.
  13. Mauer would be banned if he tried language like that here, but a link to a published article is OK.
  14. I would have nominated Nutraloaf. Cruel and unusual punishment, for anyone bothered by his pace.
  15. Normally it should not be a problem. To save a step, are you referring to this hard hitting piece (of satire)? http://www.twinkietown.com/2014/1/3/5269608/mauer-i-was-moved-to-first-base-because-of-my-stance-on-milk
  16. Would seem odd if the Twins were OK with him playing in the league for one team but only in the hopes that the team didn't make the playoffs. So it must be some issue with the Eagles team specifically?
  17. Over in another thread, someone was drawing a connection between the ad he was getting for the NRA, and the subject matter of that thread. I just didn't have the heart to 'splain it to him just then, that it probably has more to do with him than with TD or the thread topic.
  18. Might not have been him but he probably went to school with the guy.
  19. Steven Page. Drawing Steven Page. (Barenaked Ladies, lead singer, oh never mind...)
  20. "We don't need left-handed pitchers. We need pitchers who can get left-handed batters out." -- Anon (anyone with a source?)
  21. In fairness, in such a game only about 150 ever make it to the catcher.
  22. An adventurous spirit, thirsting to learn all that teh Interwebs can teach us.
  23. Apparently now it's 250,000,001.
