  1. It would take a lot of FA signings to get the Twins anywhere near the $100M mark, and until that time comes the salaries currently on the books are close to irrelevant to strategic planning.
  2. We're on the same page, then.
  3. I for one welcome our new bot overlords.
  4. Players will need to be careful not to utter either of the two "magic words" lest they get run: Bubblehead and Booby.
  5. My lawyers will be contacting your lawyers regarding the corneal damage inflicted when I read this.
  6. He's lucky. I'm too ugly for radio.
  7. What stands out to me is the absence of any mention of Christopher Herrmann. With AAA a likely starting location for Pinto, it sounds like a FA acquisition of some kind is all but assured. Question is whether to get a glove man for cheap, to complement Doumit's skillset, or go for a more complete but far more expensive player.
  8. I like this reasoning too, particularly the two throw-ins of the deal. Mastro (though I love him like a son - he was my 2012 TD adoptee ) is barely above waiver-wire fodder and if a team considers him a sweetener I gladly include him. Fien is a guy who, when I think ahead to possible playoff games, doesn't seem like one of the pitchers who drives the other team nuts when you roll out three guys to suffocate their seventh-inning rally. You have to give up talent to get talent, and Dozier as the key piece to get a good pitcher is a reasonable choice. And I am all for bundling multiple players to get an upgrade, in contrast to recent Twins history of trading one guy and getting two "maybes" in return.
  9. Both these players are on many fans' "wish list" to trade away, and were even before now.
  10. The prime for a big leaguer has been demonstrated to be in his 20s. Still, this is empirical and based on thousands of "typical" big league trajectories; one learns a lot as one progresses through the minors, and when the physical side starts to deteriorate there isn't much learning left that could compensate. In a case like Colabello, after 2 years there could still be some learning left to do when facing better pitching talent than he ran into in the indy leagues. I am far from being on the bandwagon for him, but it's less implausible than for most that his peak season might still be in his 30s.
  11. A ripple effect I don't see mentioned except in passing is DH. With Joe behind the plate the DH role had to be kept available for him at about a 20-25% rate (42 games in 2012, 29 in 2013). Perhaps the Twins will go out and find a really good hitter to hold down the DH role full time now; or maybe an in-house candidate will assert himself.
  12. The word I remembered from that era was "consistency", as in, the knock was on his defense. Here is a 2005 article that seems to mesh with that: http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20050312&content_id=965555 But I also found a 2006 article that had Gardenhire singing "Bart"'s praises for his defense, so if Gardy was sour on him by the time of the trade, something had changed.
  13. The Angels come to mind.
  14. For the lavish salary he is raking in, he should be expected to play some of the night games too.
  15. I'll cop to OOTP. And if you think professional help should be consulted for an addiction, consider this professional's opinion: http://twinsdaily.com/more-baseball/6283-article-my-love-video-games-ootp-14-a.html
  16. Water under the bridge? (Or a couple of bridges ago?)
  17. Moderator's note: Folks, let's avoid this kind of thing. I realize the last part of it is intended to lighten it a little, but really this otherwise acceptable post would have said the same thing without the intro at all.
  18. That's a very good point. He had been relieving some of the time since 2009, generally with better results than starting (but that might be typical?). Doesn't explain the relatively bad 2012, and I still believe in the FIP/BABIP explanation, but switching to relieving is a big variable that explains something.
  19. I'm not much of an expert on using Fangraphs' (or other sites') advanced analytics, but the FIP career progression looks much smoother than his ERA, and in 2013 he seems to have benefited from a favorable BABIP. No one gets AA and AAA batters out just by luck, but there doesn't have to be a coaching tweak behind the sudden good results.
  20. Agreed as well. With probably 20 teams bidding on 10 players, nobody is going to scoop up an unrecognized gem. That doesn't mean to sit back and take the leftover, if any. Get in on the bidding and come home with a shiny new prize.
  21. If TD ever starts a Snappy Quote of the Day feature, I'm nominating this one.
  22. Oh yeah, definitely worth the trip. I was just echoing the comment by B Richard.
