  1. Very fair point in addition.
  2. MLBTR has an item stating that the Phillies would be willing to trade Jimmy Rollins. In the article, it's stated: "Rollins, 35, struggled at the plate in 2013, batting .252/.318/.348..." Meanwhile our resident starter pleased some fans with his progress, posting .221/.281/.330. I don't particularly advocate trading for Rollins, as I assume the Phils want prospects the Twins won't want to part with and the Twins won't want to invest $11M a year in an aging player. I'm just mindful that one team's "struggled" can be better on offense than another team's "incumbent shortstop".
  3. Yes, and for now, they have plenty of 40-man room. Two open slots if I counted correctly.
  4. The MLBTR headline on this scared me, but finding out it's just a minor league contract lowered my blood pressure. It won't be any surprise if we look back in a couple of years and see that Kubel was one of those guys who hit his permanent decline right after age 30. As a low risk move, I can't fault it. But I'm not sure it really helps with the clutter of similar players - even if some of the clutter is traded, when he's added to the 40-man it's more of the same. Hope it works out for all concerned.
  5. I see that until his age-25 season you couldn't really say the same about his 3B fielding percentage.
  6. Thank you for summarizing my opposition to the play.
  7. Fixed. Seth, if you really meant 2015, feel free to change it back.
  8. It'll all depend on how the new regulations are written up. If it's clear where the runner is supposed to be and where the catcher is supposed to be, it has a chance. If there's a gray area, there will just be endless rhubarbs.
  9. It's not like Smith forgot all his previous front-office skills when he took the GM job. He's probably worth at least some large fraction of whatever they're paying him now, and we're speculating only on any excess. I don't look at it as silence money, exactly, but there could be an element of that in the overall decision to offer him a new position, combined with a genuine desire for his talents/services and a genuine desire to show loyalty to a good organization man. The thinking could have gone as "in addition to it being the right thing to do for Bill, it potentially spares us any controversy if he's interviewed someday and chooses his words undiplomatically...."
  10. http://www.nyfuturestars.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17857&view=previous "SportsNation Keith Law: (1:15 PM ET ) I think the Bill Smith Era in Minnesota will be poor, nasty, brutish, and short" A takeoff of a famous quote by Thomas Hobbes about what life would be like without authority: "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."
  11. The metric he used for measuring trades, WARP accrued only while the player(s) played for the respective team(s), makes a one-year stay by a player look worse than it is. Clearly the value gotten in return for Hardy was bad, by any conceivable metric, but the trade that brought Hardy here in the first place was far more balanced than this writer prefers to make it look. I stopped caring about the article at that point; just a hatchet job. Smith needed to go, and the Nishioka deal and the second Hardy trade were IMO the triggers, not because of the results but because of the process that we later learned about. This article didn't go into any of that.
  12. Because it's an interesting subject to consider.
  13. When there are areas that need improvement, it’s my job to ask questions, suggest ideas and give direction to the field staff. When our upper management has questions or suggestions, it’s my job to respond to them. I don’t believe meddling is a fair portrayal. IOW, Wedge's account was accurate.
  14. Probably a little late to snare Beltran, but let's keep dreaming big!
  15. This may explain the recent re-signing of Gardy after 3 bad seasons, to avoid the airing of dirty laundry. I keed, I keed.
  16. I couldn't find any mention of such an issue with Pinto. Might it have been a confusion with Sano having been shut down during his winter league?
  17. By adding free agents now, we pay a salary that no other team was willing to top. At some later time that can change, to the extent that another team is now willing to expend further resources (in trade) to acquire that contract, but free agents aren't quite the fungible trading chips we sometimes make them out to be. It's one of the things that annoy me (even while I exploit it) when playing sim games like Out Of The Park, when I sign an unneeded FA and immediately trade him for some tasty prospects.
  18. So... how long does the DFA process take? Is Hendriks by now cleared of waivers? Or, was the announcement that he'd been DFA'ed a signal that he had already cleared?
  19. Down there, to your left, next to "Blog this Post".
  20. Add the Mariners to that list, I reckon.
  21. Years ago, the White Sox invoked a "diminished skills" clause in Frank Thomas's contract, a move that didn't bring happiness to either party. I wonder if that kind of clause is rare, or common? Doumit's contract extension was based in large part on his ability and willingness to catch. I'm sure Terry Ryan doesn't want this to go to litigation, but if the reasonable choice becomes to cut ties and no trade can be worked out, this has the potential of becoming messy. I hope, as was already stated, this is just a rumor gone wild.
  22. Moderator's note: Folks, we went from the Hughes signing to the possibly interesting tidbit that Hughes and Ryan did not talk, to a speculative question whether that reflected poorly on Ryan, to a further digression onto where negative reflection might correctly belong. Please, unless it bears on the Hughes signing, don't wander that far off in this thread - contribute to a different thread or start one of your own. This has already turned into needless bickering.
