  1. Getting better, or at least tackling a new challenge, at age 57 is what he would have to do as a manager, since he's pretty old for getting a first job in the big chair.
  2. You should go to a SABR convention. You get conversations just like this, because of the evident passion about the game. / sorry for the threadjack - I'll go sit in the corner now with Winston
  3. Grounds for summarily becoming ex-boyfriend?
  4. None. Closest ever was last year, at the WBC in Phoenix. Joe Mauer lined one into the third base stands and it landed one row below me and one seat to the right. A companion happened to be sitting there (we had spread out because of less than capacity attendance) and he ducked to the side rather than try for it. And even though it was coming almost right at me, I didn't even bother to move - this was no popup where it's uncertain where it will land and you might jockey for it, instead it was clear it wasn't going to be within easy reach. It was definitely scorched, and probably would have hurt me if I'd tried. An older woman below us wound up with the ball. Would have been great to have snared it, it being Mauer and all, but I didn't want to end up on the stadium cam fighting an old lady (and perhaps losing).
  5. "Welcome to Spring Training, rook. Oh, and there's my duffel bag; it's not going to carry itself."
  6. Cap Huston. The purchase of Babe Ruth, FTW.
  7. His BA was better than Koufax's though. I vote to keep him in.
  8. Because it's not a good comparison. Starting pitchers usually as a group have a higher ERA than the bullpen corps. But you can't construct a better than average staff by only having relievers; someone has to pitch more innings than that. You pitch differently if you know you're expected to go 6+ innings. Achieving an OPS+ in the 90s won't get a starter into many All Star games, but it does provide value to a team.
  9. Link, to any scouts or similar experts actually saying that at this stage of development?
  10. Aside from the posts that have followed, I'd also take issue with the word "modern". I well remember the feminist rally I attended when I was living in Washington DC in the 1970s - I figured, sure, I'm a feminist, go check it out. Heh. Lots of speeches along the lines of the linked blog. I did not feel especially welcome there. I suspect you could find similar sentiments going back to the days when Sappho's poems were read in their original handwriting, as well.
  11. Ryan keeps injecting Fryer's name when nobody else seems to want to. That's got to mean something.
  12. Oranges can be delicious but apples can't be navel.
  13. But you can make it up on volume. / old joke. Slimy car dealer: "we lose $1000 on every car we sell." "Then how do you stay in business?" "We make it up on volume"
  14. No man is faithful. What women call fidelity is... Whatev.
  15. Which we've been saying for, what, three off-seasons now? That was the book on him when he was picked up off waivers. He has improved on that. Some.
  16. Disagree. Pressly may have had experience in the outfield as a high schooler, but he has concentrated on pitching for too long by now. We probably need another team to convince DeRosa to come back. Then we can trade Duensing for him.
  17. Entry to the Hall is by election, and the electors are actually given the following guidance by the Hall: 5. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played. (My emphasis added.) Source: http://baseballhall.org/hall-famers/rules-election/bbwaa
  18. You have to stay in shape, in a different way, to be ready to play the catcher position, and I don't know enough to guess how much of the wear and tear on a catcher comes from playing the games (with the recent emphasis on the risk of concussion) versus staying ready (boocoo crouching, etc), given that the aims of switching Mauer to first seem to be both to keep him in the lineup and potentially increase his already substantial effectiveness at the plate.
  19. Say, how about that Terry Ryan, as well? Is he any good? / spoiler alert - yes, I agree, please take further discussion of Hicks's merits, as opposed to him as an alternative to signing Morgan, to a better thread than this
  20. Either the numbers don't add up or I'm misunderstanding: Mike Pelfrey can earn an additional $3.5 million in incentives in 2014. ($150K @170,180IP; $200K @190IP; $500K @200IP) By contrast, the incentive numbers for Hughes just above do add up.
  21. Moderator's note: this bickering has gone on long enough. The thread was about Florimon's defense and the digression, if it has not run its course, needs to go to PM as TWO already suggested.
  22. MLBTR today throws cold water on the Twins making him an offer anyway. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/01/twins-notes-mauer-morgan-santana-rotation.html
