  1. Name this guy. (Might be easy, it's just that this was the largest photo I could find of him that has the number visible.)
  2. Related reasoning has me in the belief that the kiss cam is about to go the way of the dodobird. Present company excluded, of course.
  3. Terry Ryan's career dates back earlier than 2013, ditto others who will be involved in making such a decision. They are capable of deciding each case on its own merits, IMO, and don't dart back and forth based on the most recent experience they've had. If they decide to bring Buxton up despite what happened to Hicks when they tried it, it will be because Buxton the human being isn't Hicks the human being.
  4. But do they have the perspective (of time, of prior experience, etc) to make this judgement? I know that a few of my schoolteachers that I hated at the time were the ones who actually made me learn things, or at least tried and I was too stubborn to benefit - maybe the Twins braintrust sees the same kind of thing in Smith? (Maybe this side topic belongs in some thread of its own, if there isn't a quick resolution to it.)
  5. Moderator's note: Folks, the discussion about veterans may be interesting, but it has from the start strayed pretty far from the original poster's question, to nominate (three) non-baseball things to eliminate from the ballpark experience. TD has a "Sports Bar" forum if someone wishes to start a thread on that tangent.
  6. He doesn't get after it? He's thirty and he still has his tail, it apparently not being battled off?
  7. That's for the time being. If Bonnes wins, then he'll just be posterous!
  8. Seems wrong to click Like, so I'll consume bandwidth by offering my best wishes to all affected.
  9. This time of the year, don't waivers operate across MLB, in reverse order of 2013 record, and not league-first?
  10. I'll go Nishioka Money.
  11. That was 2012. In 2011 they signed Nishio-... wait, weren't we talking about 2014?
  12. Also Mozart, Einstein, Da Vinci, and Neil Armstrong. The five tools, apparently: write music think up equations draw real good fly real high play baseball
  13. In practice, it's probably rare for a front office to try to do it in terms of years, and somewhat more common to do it in terms of weeks or a few months to avoid hitting a particular threshold of service time a year earlier than necessary. This only happens on players they think will have multi-year careers. And with the very top echelon player they have to be careful not to build up resentment that manifests itself later on in major contract negotiations.
  14. No photos of Larry Casian on hand?
  15. http://miscbaseball.wordpress.com/2010/02/22/rod-carews-seven-steals-of-home-in-1969/ : Box score (April 19, 1969): http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIN/MIN196904190.shtml Looks as though it only tied the score, and then they won it in the bottom of the 9th, this time because Killer did take the bat off his shoulder to drive in Uhlaender. 16. All the stats on the back of his baseball card count. But if you are trying to use his 2013 season at age 23 to forecast what's to come, I think he (more than most) deserves a closer look. I've posted this before, but it gives me comfort to review it again. By my reading of his game log, there was a six week stretch starting in late April where his OPS was almost .700. Not bad for that age. Then he got hurt and was out three weeks. When he came back, he seemed to pick up where he left off and posted OPS above .800 for a couple of weeks. After the All Star break he was really terrible at bat, and I believe it was said he had some physical issues again sometime before being sent to AAA after July. Because he had been clearly getting himself out, the first two weeks in April, and then had a bizarre week right after that where his OBP was .476 based on top of a .167 BA, presumably having adjusted to the pitchers' approach to him, the start and end of his season combined for horrifying numbers. If that's cherry picking, so be it, but the Small Sample Size of 29 games where he stunk was smaller than the Small Sample Size of 52 games where he was a useful major league player. He still, to me, has fantastic promise.
  17. I don't think it was anything quite as simple as those. At the time there was a perceived oversupply of young starters, and in dealing from strength they opted to get the maximum in return they felt they could, and that meant dealing Garza. My opinion at the time was they had it backwards, and he was the one to not trade, even if the return would be less, but then again I don't have access to internal scouting reports, and my personal crystal ball is pretty much of a random number generator that happened to be right the one time.
  18. It's a game of musical chairs, except that at some stages of the game there are more players than chairs, and at other times there are more chairs than players, and everyone's blindfolded (yes even the chairs) and never quite sure of the exact layout.
  19. I haven't read the BP article either. The audiocast is interesting, as a Twins specialist giving some national podcast guys a more in-depth lowdown on the organization; I'd be hard pressed to disagree with anything he said. "I heard a lot of words, but I didn't hear really a prediction." Maybe the funniest line, from one of the hosts.
  20. So far I haven't noticed the difference.
  21. The press release sounds optimistic in its prognosis and I will hope for even better than that.
  22. OK. As Brian said, it's fine, if your questions were sincere. Hopefully the answers have been clear.
  23. While my example was a bit of a strawman to make a point, I would say from watching colleagues in the business world that if you aren't careful about how you define success then the people charged with achieving that success can be awfully creative about how they get there and you can end up with unwanted long-term results as they pursue their career objectives via short-term activities.
  24. OK, seriously, are you just playing around here? The related issues you've raised are interesting, but the previous two have already been answered from the perspective of moderation, and this one is clearly the same. If you were to raise a serious topic in a new thread, you can expect the moderators to use discretion and allow sufficient leeway to discuss it like adults. If you abuse this leeway, or post in every thread "wah, teh Poladzes are teh cheap!", then expect the discretion to be used in the other direction.
