  1. Good catch. Although in fairness maybe RHP is his shorthand for "Right Handed-batting Pitcher".
  2. Nor, as yet, in the standings. That doesn't take away from the human-interest angle of the article, which I enjoyed.
  3. I don't find this sample hilarious. What about just answering the guy's question, such as naming the weakest one or two areas of Escobar's game that stands in the way of a better ranking? Asking the guy to name Escobar's strongest area wouldn't be convincing anyway. He gave a clown answer.
  4. The Philosophy Of Anaxagoras. I learned something today, by Googling. I did not learn anything today by reading complaints about a minor league signing.
  5. Max Muncy? His name wouldn't register with me, except by the coincidence of meeting his father in Arizona during the WBC last year. Real nice guy, and that has been enough to cause me to follow the son's progress - legitimate looking power prospect on paper. How's that for a scouting report?
  6. Minor league deals don't cost anything. Maybe it's more like, if your career happens to get back on track, why not be wearing a Minnesota uniform?
  7. Didn't see any real discussion of that proposed Bailey trade. 1) Don't you think Cincy will get a better offer for him than a second-tier CF prospect, a converted 2B prospect (putting aside the suspension), and a journeyman SP? 2) Why would Bailey sign for $16M a year? / edit - taking into account pierre75275's comment, it seems like a trade that neither side might accept, all things considered
  8. "If you can remember anything about the sixties, you weren't really there." -- Paul Kantner / I guess he qualifies as an expert on this
  9. They're pretty similar players, so the mistake was bound to happen. :roll:Maybe Alex can grow a cheezy mustache during spring training and blow everyone's minds.
  10. Hicks, check. Arcia: 102 OPS+ at age 22. What were your expectations, the Triple Crown?
  11. That Dozier and Mauer were obvious ringers?
  12. Moderator's note: let's leave out the digs against one another, please.
  13. http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_round&team_ID=MIN&draft_round=2&draft_type=junreg& Saying "last 10 years or so" might be cherry picking the end date to make a dubious point, since the jury is still out on the most recent such picks and because just outside the 10 year range from 2002-2005 the Twins obtained Crain/Baker/Swarzak/Slowey - only some shortstop named Drew Thompson broke that streak of positive-valued second rounders. Baker's probably the only one to make you stop and think twice about signing a premium FA of course. Consider it a second round of snark.
  14. And if Tanaka does opt out after 4 years, the amortization of that posting fee makes the yearly cost even a bit higher. As with any "interesting" contracts, we don't actually know what the true cost will be until one or more decisions get made down the line. / edit - I see Brock and I were on the same wavelength.
  15. Moderator's note: rather than also delete this comment, I will say that the comment that was cut was a juvenile, one-hyphenated-word, play on the article author's name, basically asking "who?", and in no sense a questioning of the validity of the article or even a mention of its content. Please review the Comment Policy, in particular where it says (Emphasis modified.) And you now compound the mistake by questioning moderator policy in a baseball thread, also contrary to the above-linked TD policy. Follow the process outlined there, if you feel the need. Please keep the discussion here about baseball.
  16. Probably should have been a differently abled amount of money. We'll keep an eye on this.
  17. Moderator's note: please, if you (collectively) feel compelled to invite debate on a topic like this, open a new thread. I thought about asking this earlier when it came up, but hoped it would not start to take a life of its own here in this thread about arbitration and signings and specific players.
  18. That's the nature of trading for prospects. If you want a high ceiling guy who is also ready for the majors, you don't get him for Ben Revere.
  19. It's not like we have to completely guess about this. We can't know what goes on between his ears, but we do have results to go by. I know of this source for public consumption: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=may---001tre&type=pgl&year=2013 There may be other for-pay sites with more. This one indicates that May gives up a lower OPS-against with men on base than bases-empty. No evidence, there, to suggest his high ERA is from a lack of will to win.
  20. Slow, Slower, Slowey, and Bugs Bunny Changeup?
  21. Banjos, computer programming - geek or nerd, you make the call! I'd give a nickel to have Gardy in the room during this interview and watch the eye-rolling. Fun interview, good questions, sounds like a great kid (which is pretty typical of minor league players I think). Good jorb!
  22. I didn't realize so many players take part in winter ball, ahem, "offseason leagues". Makes it seem standard enough procedure, that discussion to not overwork top prospects seems out of the mainstream. Looks like Florimon really turned a corner, for those hoping for a breakout season at the plate in 2014. .407 OPS in the Dominican league.
  23. His 2012 salary of $7.5M minus taxes etc set him up for life. His 2013 salary of $11M allows him to go for high-end luxury items and activities during his career and thereafter. This contract allows him to start a charitable foundation, act as a venture capitalist to foster innovation, or whatever else he can think up.
  24. Getting better, or at least tackling a new challenge, at age 57 is what he would have to do as a manager, since he's pretty old for getting a first job in the big chair.
