  1. Gentle hazing can have a place in team-building. "[P]hysical abuse and public humiliation," as the article author characterized it, not so much. Zaun: "Phil Regan, the manager of the Baltimore Orioles, he did not care, because he knew that what those guys were doing was ‘educating me." Ah, the Phil Regan who had a significantly worse W-L record in his one season of managin' than the gentlemen who preceded and succeeded him. Got it. Not as easy vulturing wins when you're not in a bullpen.
  2. I recall nothing of what he's done and little of what he's said. There was something about Danny Santana being reported by the scouts to be a shortstop or maybe I misunderstood.
  3. I already have rights to the World Series.
  4. Hearing from Nick in 3... 2...
  5. If he shows normal progress and has a season about like that in the majors at age 24 (assuming decent defense) it will be fine with me. He can build on that for age 25 and on. I'm with you on Chattanooga for 2015 and I don't even really consider it a "push". Maybe TR and the rest of the braintrust do.
  6. If that's played with regulation baseballs and not whiffle balls, I would have a jammed/sprained finger within 90 seconds.
  7. Darn. And I had already popped the popcorn.
  8. The point about defense is a good one. I was just thinking about butts in the seats, obviously - the bump in his salary for the last third of the season versus who he was traded for will be paid for if say 1000 people more per game show up. (1000 x $50 x 29 games = $1.4M versus ($12M-$9.4M)*(29/82) = $0.9M). That's a big if of course. Based on the present reseller market I don't know what ticket price to set from the team's perspective; maybe all they can hope for is concession sales incrementally at this point. In that case maybe it comes back to defense.
  9. Production values! Love the camera pan. He kinda fell asleep in someone's barber chair, though. Trivialities aside, the young gentleman was fully in the moment in that game in Fenway, was he not.
  10. I like that word community. It's why I take part.

  12. The statisticians are tackling a topic that is based on the subjectivity of calling balls and strikes. Infiltration of subjectivity has been approximately on a level of how the US Armed Forces infiltrated Normandy on June 6 1944,
  13. Fixed it. I think. If not, I'm sure I'll hear from the Admins not to ever try a fool thing like that again.

  16. I let Brunansky worry about tweaking the K's a little?
  17. And then there was the family that named their kids Eeny, Meeny, Miney, and Irving. Why not Moe? "We didn't want any Moe."
  18. The Neyer article posted just above demonstrates to my satisfaction that framing is a concept older than the sabermetricians trying to quantify it. Alternatively known as pitch pulling.
  19. That ship sailed some time ago; I wish they had, but they didn't. And with the advent of the Nationals, who I believe have taken over the territorial custodianship of baseball history, it won't happen.
  20. Why does the site software limit me to only one 'like' per post?
  21. I don't know why more players don't use this strategy. The Gas-House Gorillas could have taken Bugs Bunny deep instead of striking out (on one pitch!), for example. BTW I thought the title said Nerdscouting.
