  1. Ryan a few weeks ago was quoted on the subject of the Toronto job as that he wasn't interested and did not have the necessary skill set to be anything above the GM role where he is now. I inferred that he likes having someone like Dave St Peter above him to handle the tasks he's not that interested in doing himself - the non-baseball side of the business.
  2. Making a modern day Ron Hunt or Don Baylor additionally valuable to his team.
  3. We can still have a World Series, though, right? / spring training games too...
  4. He just hires the guys that do.
  5. My working hypothesis (total speculation of course) is that the Dodgers broke his heart after he got traded to them, by offering him less salary and for fewer years of guaranteed money than the Twins did. His agent convinced him that he could not pass up the security of a 2 times greater total package. And so it's a classic case of his head telling him one thing but his heart another.
  6. Working from Seth's, Cody's and Jeremy's top 10 lists in the TD Prospect Handbook (i.e., a top 12 or 13 collectively), I'd list my upside picks from outside this group as: Max Kepler Travis Harrison Max Murphy Zack Larson Adam Walkerand Stephen Gonsalves Chih-Wei Hu Jason Wheeler Taylor Rogers Jake ReedI omit guys with too short a professional track record to gauge. Upside doesn't mean likelihood, of course.
  7. Fangraphs uses a different algorithm and has Slegers at 250 pounds.
  8. With 13-man starters plus bench, or even sometimes just 12, platooning is rare these days. But maybe this is the year to try it, unless and until Hicks figures out how to hit righties.
  9. If every break goes our way, yes the team could be above .500. The ceilings are there, for most of the positions you named, as opposed to hoping for career minor leaguers to somehow become above average, and there's a partly-new coaching staff to try and get the most out of everybody. And maybe it's time for the breaks to trend our way. I'm optimistic, until the first three-game losing streak. I'm also typing this after consuming a delicious Sierra Nevada Porter, alcohol 5.6% by volume, so I reserve the right to return to sanity at some point in the future and expect a difficult but interesting season.
  10. By coincidence, someone asked me just today, "Do Twins fans even consider the old Senators when talking about the history of the franchise?". I basically snickered and said "nooooooo". Your post reminds me that not even the Twins organization itself acknowledges that part of their history in this way.
  11. That's a thing, is still a thing?
  12. I tuned into the TwinsFest live video feed, just in time to hear a reference to what could be the solution: have Hrbek take Nolasco out ice fishing. That should change Ricky's attitude about the place!
  13. I like and admire Terry Ryan, but if he ever were to get fired it would be over declining revenue and not W/L record. The situation now is bad, and (as suggested in the original post) it comes from recognizing and aggressively addressing the problem two years too late. The rebuild was and is sound, the bridge from 2011 to the future has not been.

  15. Darn stat-heads, making judgements via age and league level.
  16. I'm very doubtful they would consider putting the franchise in Warroad.
  17. Exactly. Why can't the Twins do that?
  18. And Boyd makes me think of that one guy on Workaholics - that can't be good, can it? http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8p5tvEeWH1rcjifso1_r2_500.gif (I know his name is Adam DeVine. That one guy on Workaholics is just a better descriptor for, well, that one guy whose character on Workaholics would probably describe the character as that one guy on Workaholics.)
  19. As a Nevadan now, I concur with the shortsightedness of this. First, and not that it affects most of the population centers in the nation, but the apparent need to color in every single square mile of the US with a team allegiance strikes me as obsessive rather than business-based. Do the teams in the Bay Area really believe that someone in Reno's going to slap his forehead and say "shoot! the game's blacked out, guess I'll hop in the car and drive across the Sierra to take in a game this afternoon"??? I mean, some percentage of the A's tickets do get sold to folks from around here, just as the Twins rely on buses full of Iowegians coming up for a day trip or even making a weekend of it. But it's not because the game is blacked out on teevee. It's an event when I go. And I'm more likely, not less, to attend a game in person if I've watched the year's edition of the team some, and have gotten to know and root for the players. This seems like Marketing 101 to me; guess TPTB have taken the graduate level course though.
  20. Do we have to worry about our best prospects absorbing certain aspects of the Chattanooga culture?
  21. I didn't marry the biggest baseball fan in the world, but when I mentioned at dinner the other night that TD was running a series of posts on the 25 greatest General Managers, she asked where Branch Rickey landed on that list. It didn't matter that she brushed off my compliments by saying he was the only GM she could name, nor that she had seen the movie '42' within the past year; I continue to tell anyone who'll listen, I married well. / She also can still name the starting lineup for the 1966 Chicago Cubs, within epsilon
  22. Up until this, I was about to say, you keep a girl like her. As it is, I'll echo the sentiment, good riddance.
  23. If you were looking at a max salary this coming year of only around $500K, you'd live in a van too, amiright?
