  1. I remain more interested in a team's 25-and-under talent, than the arbitrary distinction involving rookie status. The Cubs major league stats page had a lot more players than the Twins at age 24 or below last year (so 25 coming up); the WAR total bb-ref shows for those players is higher for the Twins, but their total was almost entirely attributed to Danny Santana, who "some" here feel is due for a regression to the mean. Also many Cubs youngsters racked up negative WAR last year (learning curve or just lack of talent, I can't say), and I don't know if it's wiser to subtract or just treat them as zero, in which case the Cubs' WAR total would have been about the same as the Twins. All 5 of the Twins' young'un batters registered positive WAR, including Polanco who gets 0.3 WAR for his 8 plate appearances. Prorated to a full season that would be, what, 20-25 WAR? W00t! I'm glad I take SSS at face value.
  2. That was my reaction. It could be considered cynical, or merely practical, but if someone wants to protect his reputation as a scout, I expect it's safer to err on this side of prediction; if somebody else challenges the report 5 years later because the player did stick, he can still knock the player's current performance in some way, unless we're talking about Ozzie Smith.
  3. In terms of revenue this knocks out #25, #1, #2, #11 and #28 respectively1. I suspect #3 through #10 will make themselves heard next year if they wish. And the economics of the rules dictate that once a team is in they go all in. 1Forbes Business Of Baseball ranking

  5. Yeah, I was thinking, he gave his catcher NO chance to nail the runner on that one.
  6. Mentorin'! The whole outfield! http://www.educationelf.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/shutterstock_45340885-300x199.jpg
  7. This casts doubt on the authenticity of Bugs Bunny's previously mentioned success against the Gas House Gorillas. In other news, a 25 year old starter is still working on a third weapon. Don't they teach anything at U of Kentucky? Might he have been wiser to accept Boston's 20th-round draft of him as a HS senior? Sheesh.
  8. The sheer number of potential major leaguers is what jumped out at me a month or two ago when I went through looking for players to watch in 2015.
  9. In addition, every team has a few older guys signed just because they are available and are needed to fill out the roster. High-A Fort Myers for instance had Mike Gonzalez playing first base at age 26, presumably because that position was a hole in their prospect hierarchy that they chose not to fill in some other way. It brings the league average up without really meaning anything. Since it's every team and every year, you just factor in that a prospect a little younger than league average is about normal.
  10. Big revenue teams will alternate years as to who gets to sign the big talent. The big-picture problem remains.
  11. Games in the big markets will be sold out instantly. High demand games where you live, likewise. StubHub Ticket King will arrange the arbitrage profits to the scalpers instead of the owners getting them, keeping a healthier cut for themselves of course.
  12. My experience with people at the top (of my profession) is they have a burning desire to prove the first time wasn't a fluke. Gardy didn't get a WS but I'm sure he's pleased with reaching the postseason several times - not my intention to yet again open that can of worms for us to determine whether the pleasure is justified - but that was with a certain core of players. He would have liked to stay through the complete roster turnover and reach success again; lacking that, he wants to do it again somewhere else. That's my read.
  13. Gentle hazing can have a place in team-building. "[P]hysical abuse and public humiliation," as the article author characterized it, not so much. Zaun: "Phil Regan, the manager of the Baltimore Orioles, he did not care, because he knew that what those guys were doing was ‘educating me." Ah, the Phil Regan who had a significantly worse W-L record in his one season of managin' than the gentlemen who preceded and succeeded him. Got it. Not as easy vulturing wins when you're not in a bullpen.
  14. I recall nothing of what he's done and little of what he's said. There was something about Danny Santana being reported by the scouts to be a shortstop or maybe I misunderstood.
  15. I already have rights to the World Series.
  16. Hearing from Nick in 3... 2...
  17. If he shows normal progress and has a season about like that in the majors at age 24 (assuming decent defense) it will be fine with me. He can build on that for age 25 and on. I'm with you on Chattanooga for 2015 and I don't even really consider it a "push". Maybe TR and the rest of the braintrust do.
  18. If that's played with regulation baseballs and not whiffle balls, I would have a jammed/sprained finger within 90 seconds.
  19. Darn. And I had already popped the popcorn.
  20. The point about defense is a good one. I was just thinking about butts in the seats, obviously - the bump in his salary for the last third of the season versus who he was traded for will be paid for if say 1000 people more per game show up. (1000 x $50 x 29 games = $1.4M versus ($12M-$9.4M)*(29/82) = $0.9M). That's a big if of course. Based on the present reseller market I don't know what ticket price to set from the team's perspective; maybe all they can hope for is concession sales incrementally at this point. In that case maybe it comes back to defense.
  21. Production values! Love the camera pan. He kinda fell asleep in someone's barber chair, though. Trivialities aside, the young gentleman was fully in the moment in that game in Fenway, was he not.
