  1. Never met Dobnak, but he was willing to sign the offered deal and has worked hard to meet his end. It was a shot in the dark by Falvine that missed. Glad to see Randy get his pay. He likely is disappointed to not get more MLB time but rational about making a living.
  2. Gasper = Vazquez as an infielder. Gasper has been hitting well. Does this mean he is an infielder? The Twins choices for gloves, aside from Correa, are a bit scary. It is best to listen to the games because then you will learn that every batted ball is a line drive base hit. Pity the pitchers.
  3. Sadly this careless approach/ neglect to turning outs into base-runners remains my only concern with the Twins and it extends well beyond EJ.
  4. There are people who suggest anyone can play first base. Well, maybe not. How many times has Julien practiced that pivot and throw from first base? 200? I'm wondering what the Twins are doing with Julien. In today's game he is at first while Gasper is at second base. If the Twins ever use Gasper at second ahead of Vazquez during the regular season, questions need to be asked. Perhaps it would be best if the Twins made a permanent decision on Julien. Another team should be an option because at this point it just looks like they are effing Eddy around.
  5. Starters should push towards 7 innings (at least finish 6 IP) and the bullpen will be fine. The issues arrive when the the pen is forced into too many appearances and innings. The bats need to do their job this season. Once again though, the Twins will concede runs via a defense that can only reach average if everything goes perfectly. Why does it seem like two fellas not being counted on are keys to the season, Julien and Keaschall? I ask that because it feels like we know what we can get from the other players. Then again, perhaps a couple of rookies emerge unexpectedly.
  6. Not a thing. Nobody, including not a single Twin in management, expects Raya to be a Twin early in the season. He is just getting the kinks out. Hopefully he is done hitting people and throwing the ball all over.
  7. Well, different activities require separate skills, muscle groups, and such. One can have major knee surgery and not miss a minute of work. Athletes have different expectations. Throwing a baseball is incredibly stressful on both elbows and shoulders and swinging a bat is a violent movement. Athletes in all sports miss time and comparisons across sports are difficult at best. If I compare my own experiences across football, hockey, basketball, and baseball my opinion is that basketball was easily the most physical overall. Pitching left me much more sore than any of the others and catching left the most long term damage. Never was sore or injured in either football or hockey but also never played either of those sports above the high school level. The differences at the highest professional levels are acute though. Football has large numbers of former players with varying degrees of CTE. The violence at the NFL level far surpasses the hits in any other team sports due to the sheer size of the players. A typical NFL team has more 300 pound players than an NHL team has guys at 200+ pounds. While I don't follow other sports closely, it seems to me that a number of Wild players are out at any given time or do people consider Kaprizov, Brodin, and Erickson Ek soft? Injuries happen. At the close of every practice and game for decades, the last question was always a check for injuries. It is a serious matter to overlook safety and one should resist questioning the toughness of injured player. Plainly speaking, athletes believe that injuries suck. But it happens.
  8. Maybe you could write an article and explain how this would/might be good for the game. This thread isn't the place for a discussion on this issue but you should consider putting together an argument or explanation.
  9. Lombard is a good field/ no hit prospect who is a long way from getting a look at MLB. Spencer Jones has power potential, so does Carson McCusker. I wouldn't trade McCusker for Jones. Having watched all of the players you mention, I'm wondering if you just read about these guys or have watched them play.
  10. Put him in the lineup on Day One.
  11. Yes, it would be interesting, but we also know that zero answers are ever forthcoming from a talking head in the front office or even someone from the field staff. The prospect game was initiated to draw interest from the public at large. While many people on Twins Daily may be familiar with more than a couple of dozen prospects, the average fan is not familiar with more than a half dozen if that number. As far as pressure, we have not seen the Twins pay attention to their fan base on many levels. It is a corporate approach. Thus while the initial idea was that teams would roster many of their top prospects, it is not a surprise to see the Twins view the game as merely another game to fill out the March exhibition schedule. The minor league guys are worth watching via milb.com once their season begins.
  12. Defense, running the bases, and timely hitting are major concerns for this team. The pitching staff doesn't worry me in the least.
  13. When it comes to Buxton, one can only or at least be hopeful. As for thoughts related to front office and Twins management, they are a mystery. We are programmed to believe that people in high profile positions across our culture have expertise and yet there are literally hundreds of examples of total incompetence and even functional illiteracy at so many levels. Inheritance and the glass floor have managed to obscure what is and is not functional intelligence and/or competence. While I cannot identify any plan or purpose currently practiced by the Twins, I will hope for the best and count on the players to carry the load.
  14. Brandon Winokur is too tall, the same comment applied to Correa, Seager, and Elly De La Cruz at one time. We shall see in time. No worries today.
  15. The biggest news here is that there are still 3 weeks left in March to evaluate the players if that is being done. Gasper at second base - holy crap. He looks just like Vazquez out there.
  16. The Twins entire season does hinge on Correa. He is the only shortstop they have at this time. Castro and Lee can play shortstop in much the same manner as Julien plays second base, they are ok. The difference is that a shortstop is more involved in team defense.
  17. No question. Very few front office people have been played as badly. Many prayers were answered because Jorge Polanco did not have a good year, but it doesn't change what happened one iota.
  18. Tonkin is the only arm in the bullpen who can take the ball on 3 consecutive days or pitch 3 innings if needed. He is a decent MLB relief pitcher. While it is true that Tonkin is not a normal late inning arm, the outs he gets when he is needed in the 5th, 6th, or 7th inning are valuable. Who else can throw 2 innings on consecutive days and come back on a third day with another inning? Most of the Twins bullpen arms are 1 inning every other day. My opinion is that the Twins need Tonkin in their pen.
  19. We shall see if Lewis has regained some speed, quickness, and flexibility from his changed workout regime in the offseason. Hopefully he is improved as a third baseman. If Royce struggles this season again with the glove, he could be a good first baseman for the team. A pile of eyes will be watching Lewis because he has been consistently identified in the same sentence with Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton, which seems a little unfair to the young man.
  20. The return for Chris Paddack is essentially a shot in the dark, maybe a player from the DSL or rookie leagues. As far as type, it would be 40+ FV at best. Remember that Kyle Gibson is still available and a few guys signed recently for half of what Paddack will earn. The Twins made a concerted effort to retain Paddack. There was zero evidence of trade talk. We also don't know if the Twins wanted to trade CP except for comments that the Twins expected good things from him this year. To be totally fair, silence except for the support statements rules the winter. This is a choice and we as Twins fans hope it turns out well. This is just another reason why it is somewhat ludicrous to gasp about payroll when Paddack's position was easily replaced by several minimum wage guys. So, think positive and hope big Chris has a couple of decent months. I'm happy for him that he gets to earn a good wage and pitch in the major leagues.
