You didn't mention the 3.81 ERA Varland had in his trial with the Twins the year before. He has earned a chance to start. He may be good. He is a likely a real good reliever. The idea is to get a known quantity towards the top of the rotation for the playoffs. Someone to replace what Gray brought to the table. not just replace his innings with a 4.5 ERA. Unless of course the front office believes they can add a notch to the pitcher's effectiveness with a new pitch (Sweeper) or a new mix of pitching strategy or adding a few miles to their fast balls. or best yet a combo of those three things. The Twins helped Gray elevate to ace level status. Let's see if we can find a starter who they can do that again with. or get someone like Burnes from Milwaukee.... I am out on this pitcher from Baltimore.

I thought the Twins were only interested in a 1 year deal. Next year is going to be more expensive then this year and we should still have 5 options with several minor leaguers knocking on the door. I want a better pitcher then Hauser too but the deal fits what the front office is doing.

Here is a downer of a realistic trade. Polanco to Milwaukee for Adrian Houser and a prospect. Houser has 1 year till free agency and has ok numbers. Can our coaches help add a few ticks to his fastball? A sweeper? We get a starter to add to with no long term commitments and a prospect to add to the system. Milwaukee gets help at their black hole at 2B and an option to do that again in 2025. We could alter this deal and make it Farmer and a prospect or Sands or Winder for Houser as well. There could be a few ways to make this deal.

The cost from what I am reading here is too high to get Luzardo. We don’t need to create more holes to replace the ones we have. Though there are trade packages I would do to acquire him. Miami is looking for offense. I would trade Wallner, Polanco, and Festa for Luzardo. Might as well trade a pitcher to replace the one you’re getting. I feel like this cost is a little too high but it’s what I would pay. Or if the Marlins really want a C I would keep Wallner and replace with Carmago and a low level prospect. Maybe include their 2B prospect they sent us last year.

Projecting the 2027 Twins Lineup
Brandon replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Right. If we have more starters on the way, and they are better or equal to what we currently have and that allows us to make trades then we will have years of low-cost starter meaning lots of stability for the foreseeable future like I said earlier.- 53 replies

I think it would make sense to give some cost certainty extensions and maybe front load a few of these for less expense down the road for players through their arbitration years and either 1 year of free agency, option year for first year of free agency or none. Players for this type of extension would be Duran, Ryan, Ober, Jax maybe Jeffers. Jeffers will be 30 when he is a free agent so I doubt he wants to lock in money beyond that date before unless it’s an extension that takes him to age 34/35. And there is no need for that. beyond that I would do a 2 year contract for Theilbar. I doubt he wants to go anywhere else so a 2 year 8 million total extension 3 year 1 and 5 year 2 or 3.5/ 4.5. Or add an option. 3.5/ 3.5/ with 1 million buyout or 4 million in year 3. For either a 2 year 8 million or 3 year 11 million. Lewis not sure how I do this one but an 8 -10 year extension. Maybe with an opt out or incentives or escalators or similar to the contract Julio signed in Seattle. But something with a lot of cash. Would Kepler and the Twins agree to a 3 or 4 year extension? 13-15 million per season????
-
An extension for Ryan might be for cost certainty during his arbitration years. Maybe we front load it a little to keep costs down when others are rising. Maybe we add a team option for one year of free agency. This way the Twins can have an option to keep him should Lopez leave when his contract is up….Which should be at around the same time. Here is an on the spot, without research, inaccurate example of what I am talking about. Ryan could in theory make 800k - 3 million - 8 million - 13 million and is then a free agent. That is about 25 million. Or we could sign him to an extension like a 4 year 20 million with a 5th year option and a 1 million buyout. The salaries the next 4 seasons. 2 million, 4 million, 6 million 8 million. With 1 million buyout and 22 million. Now that’s not how the extension would actually be structured but something like that.

And I would make that gamble for the right price. Not sure LEwis would. But I would. Definitely!

The key takeaway is your going to bet. We just don’t know who for just not against the Royals. Got it👍

Projecting the 2027 Twins Lineup
Brandon replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Good news is we have lots of stability for the foreseeable future. The rotation is similarly set as 2027 should be something like Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Varland and hopefully we develop one more starter. I imagine by 2027 some of these up an coming players may be traded for salary relief. Otherwise I think most of these players will actually be here. Like the class of 1982 Twins in 1987……Oh yeah! I went there!- 53 replies

Offseason Status Update: Attrition By Subtraction
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
More subtraction occurred today. Rob Antony will be leaving at the end of the year as his contract expires and was not renewed. He has been here since 1988. And was the acting GM between Terry Ryan and Falvey and Levine. I think he traded for Mejia with the Angels for Nolasco and that injured starting pitching prospect. The one we got from the Nationals for Span. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/central-notes-cubs-royals-india-twins.html- 43 replies

Is Luis Castillo Possibly Available In A Trade?
Brandon replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
When looking for Twins pitching targets it makes more sense to look for a pitcher with mainly 1 year of control left so the cost to acquire stays lower. We already have 5 starting pitchers who are locked in for a while. 4 of them through the next 4 seasons. We have multiple prospects on the way up too. so we will have plenty of depth available at AAA after this season. In 2024 I expect Varland, Festa, and SWR to get 4-10 starts each minimum (Varland may get 32) Dobnak is available for a spot start or two. Look at who all should be available at some point next season. Festa, SWR, and then Lewis, Raya, Peirson Oh, CJ Culpepper and more. maybe Preliepp. with budgets and available low cost talent on the way the Twins are well positioned moving forward, I said that to make the point we only need the impact starter for this coming season. -
Offseason Status Update: Attrition By Subtraction
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How many moves do you expect the front office to make? I expect a starting pitcher capable of being trusted in the playoffs. A #2 starter. I also expect the Twins will sign a bench player either a CF or 1B and a minor league deal or three for relievers and depth. And a depth starter maybe. That would tell us how the Twins feel about our starters below Varland. If Keuchel wants to come back on a AAA deal and even one with opt outs or handshake agreements to move him for a MLB opportunity, I’m on board with that. Out of all that I only expect 1 major transaction. Though if the pitcher we acquire has a salary over 5 million and we are not trading a salary back in the deal, I would expect the Twins will trade Polanco for prospects and salary relief. Though I suspect it’s Farmer on his way out.- 43 replies

Is Luis Castillo Possibly Available In A Trade?
Brandon replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
We should absolutely corner the Luis Castillo market and acquire all Luis Castillo's out there to play for the Twins at some point in their careers. Luis Castillo Stats, Height, Weight, Position, Rookie Status & More | Baseball-Reference.com In case you forgot we already had Luis Castillo back in 2007 and 2008, -
Anyone take notice of the Royals raising their floor to try to be a .500 team next season? They signed 2 starting pitchers Wacha and Lugo and 2 relievers Chris Stratton and Will Smith and a utility player Garret Hampton and a bat in Hunter Renfroe. These moves won’t make them a contender but will raise their floor. They may be a .500 team next year and definitely will be a better opponent when we play them. They are adding around 400-500 innings and a 20-30 HR bat and some speed to their lineup and bench. I think they are about done except maybe a few minor tweaks here and there. But what do you think of the makeover in Kansas City and their pitching staff and team really? Will they be competitive next season?

So the Delmon Young trade is just a branch of the Chuck Knoblauch trade. Buchanan was acquired in the Knoblauch trade. The Author didn’t go back far enough for accuracy.

I am surprised they guaranteed that much money. I would have made it with easy to reach incentives like 100-120 innings then gone up for that last 5. Maybe 12 million guarantee with 1 million bonus at 80 innings and 2 million per 10 innings that second season to reach the 22 million total. Just so you don’t lose all that money when he blows out his shoulder or has bilateral leg weakness or something even weirder.
-
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/#google_vignette 22 million with 5 million incentives

You must have missed the article on MLB.com after the dodgers signed Ohtani they have the best 3 hitters in a row… duos are so last week… also note the Twins didn’t make that list either but they also didn’t have a hitter with more than 72 RBIs either so is pitching really scared…. We did have I think 14 players with 40+ RBIs which I think is interesting also that even with such a low RBI leader we were 5 th in the league in runs scored and that is my preference to have the highest scoring offense in the league.

The Yankees are using Judge in CF and probably want to keep Trent as the 4 th OF to have a true CF option. Plus Trent hits .200 we are better off in house.

The Twins Should Not Trade Max Kepler
Brandon replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lots of players struggled in 2021. That was after the extra-long layoffs from COVID. lots of pitchers got hurt too. Keuchel went downhill and you will find many others who got out of top baseball shape and struggled when coming back in 2021. Kepler was one of them. This does not justify what happened. but Kepler was good in 2020 and struggled in 2021 and in 2022 was off to a solid start 2 months into the season and got hurt and played hurt. 2023 he got off to a bad start (I got nothing here) but rebounded and had good numbers the second half. If I had to guess. we played tougher competition in the first half of the season and our schedule was softer the second half. Kepler was probably better than he was in the first half last year but not as good as he was in the second half either. Thats my explanations.- 139 replies
