Why am I a fan of this (fake) poverty franchise?
Heiny replied to AZDane's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I understand the point of not spending enough to keep up, but is that what it really takes? What I really have a problem with is the same people who whine about their teams not spending enough money on payroll are the same people who constantly whine about the cost of taking the family to the game. If the team doulbled what they spend on payroll and cut the cost of going to a game by half we would surely find something else to whine about. It seems to me that we are fans of whining more than anything else. -
As I look back over the last nearly 60 years of following and being a fan of the Twins and MLB in general, I have found that I've gotten really good at hindsight.

Yeah, well I'm not real big on this deal. I would prefer giving Martin and Larnach a shot at the last roster spot at this point of the season. If they didn't work out, Im sure there could be some other trades possible between May and August. Margot could turn out to be okay, but I'm just not feeling it. Just Blahhhh. Hope I'm wrong.

Paddack and DeSclafani worry me a bit. I like Varland as the sixth man up but would love to see a little more proof. If something happens to one or more of our top 3 this season could take a deep dive in a hurry. Don't get me wrong, I am excited about this team(as always), but realistically, with a few injuries, this rotation could fall apart in a hurry.

Twins A Finalist for Utility-man Kiké Hernandez's Services
Heiny replied to wiguy94's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I really don't see the need for Kike. I think we have plenty of depth in the minors at this point for his utility value. Looks like a waste of money to me. No need to spend for the sake of spending. -
When I look at Lee, I see a young man with broad shoulders and thick chest and very strong legs. I believe he will develop into an very good hitter with 30 home run capability. With SS athleticism he should be the first call-up if any starting infielder goes on IL. When he gets the call it will be up to him to show he belongs. He can be an all-star at either 2b or 3b. With the versatility of Kirilloff being able to play 1b or corner outfield and Lewis to play 3b, 2b, ss, or LF I am very confident in our defensive depth and offensive upside. This should be a very interesting team and fun to watch.

Minnesota Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Catcher
Heiny replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In short, I am comfortable with the Twins catcher situation. If both guys stay relatively healthy, I think we are in pretty decent shape.- 40 replies

I think this scenario is toally accurate. The best scenario for this season is to sign someone to a one year deal with team options. And although I have a lot of confidence in Varland, I think the best way to spend on a one-year contract is to sign Bauer. High reward - low risk. He is willing to sign a major league minimum deal to prove himself. If there is a problem with attitude or behavior or a lack of performance he can be DFA'd at a minimal cost. I think he deserves a chance. And with the great attitudes of guys like Correa, Lopez, Lewis, Farmer and Vasquez, who knows, he may really like a manager like Rocco. I realize I am in the minority here but it almost seems like a no-brainer to me. This could really improve the strength of our starting staff. And the key here is the low risk factor.

I predict a breakout for Larnach. I have been high on him ever since he was drafted and been disapointed each year. But if he is going to get it figured out, now is the time, and he very well knows it. When he gets the bat on the ball it can go a long way. If Martin has a good spring training he could very well be the guy, rookie or not. I could also see the Twins signing MAT, Duvall or Pham which would make them the 26th man. In any case, I'm not too worried about the team as it stands. However, I still think signing Montgomery is the last best option. If Buxton can stay relatively healthy, the extra hitter is not necessary and we have enough backup in Martin, Kiersey and Helman to start with. I think the starting pitcher is the biggest need. But as things stand, I would bet on the last spot going to Larnach to start the season.

To me, this articles comments have taken on two related but separate topics. 1. Why is baseball losing its fan base gradually over the years. And 2. How to win back fans after a bad, for the majority of the fans, tv deal. 1. When I was young in the 60's and 70's, baseball was life for most boys at least in small Minnesota towns. Now in my town and in many small towns I drive through, there are more soccer fields than baseball diamonds. Why is that? It baffles me. 2. If you want to win back fans through tv, the answer is very very simple. Make baseball games on tv accessible to as many homes as possible at a reasonable cost. It's just that simple. I don't see that happening. With the technology of this day, anybody should be able to watch any game they want from anywhere they want. And to relate these two topics, you will slowly but gradually increase the interest in the game once again. I am lucky enough to be able to still subscribe to a cable network that still has Bally but the package price for internet and cable channels is over $200 per month. Seems like an unreasonable cost to me. Yes I can afford it. But many families who are young with growing children cannot. These are the families that need to be catered to, to grow interest.

This looks like BS. And I actually think Bellinger is being grossly over-rated and not worth anywhere near the money being talked about. How about having a few consistant seasons above average before paying him like a superstar. If we're going to spend that kind of money, then go after Montgomery or Snell. If they are not signed by now, we may be able to get one of them on a two year deal with options. 30M dollars is alot of money for anyone to turn down.

What Could a Royce Lewis Extension With Twins Look Like?
Heiny replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For comparison purposes, approximately what would his total salary be through his arb years? That needs to be taken into consideration. Let's say he would make approx. 40M through 2028 without an extension through the arb years. Is that reasonalble? Then take inflation and the extra inflated way that superstar baseball salaries are going. I would want to get him for 4 of his free agent years which is going to cost about (40M a piece?) So we would be talking about 9 years for 200M. I'm thinking that this is what it would take. Does this sound reasonable? If you were Lewis, would you turn down this life changing guarenteed money? Not me! But, would this be a wise move for the Twins? We're looking at 22M+ for the next 9 years and he hasn't played a full year yet. If I'm the Twins, I would have to wait at least another year or maybe two. -
I am very disappointed in Balazovic. I thought he was going to be a top of the order SP for us as he was a young prospect. Yes, I guess I could have been over valuing him a bit, but that is where I had him. Maybe he will be a late bloomer and figure some things out yet. He's still not old by any means, so I'm happy that we were able to retain him and will continue to root for his development. I see Kiersy as a Celestino type. Hope he doesn't flame out, seems to have alot of talent. Seth, outstaning write-up. Really looking forward to spring training.

God forbid, but I think a major injury to Correa, Lewis or Julien and a good spring by Lee gives him a chance. But let's hope he just gets to spend as much time in AAA as he needs. No need right now to rush him. Better to be safe anyway considering we are very well set currently.

I have to disagree due to the fact that Kirilloff has his handcuff with Santana. As far as leap frogging, I don't really see that Miranda is much ahead of Martin and less position availability for Miranda. Also I think that tearing up spring training is a great way for a rookie break in to the bigs.
-
I'm not seeing much on the free agent market left that I think would help much. I would be ok with standing pat with Castro, Santana, Vasquez, Farmer and Martin on the bench to start the season. Still would have a pretty strong Miranda, Larnach, and Lee in St. Paul. just itching for a call-up. On the SP front, I don't see alot out there other than Snell and Montgomery that would be worth while, and I don't see the Twins ponying up for them. I might take a chance on Ryu or Clevinger on a one year deal with a team option. But I still think Bauer on a minimum salary with incentives has the highest upside. If he sucks or is a problem in any way, DFA him at minimum cost. He really wants to prove himself so I think it would be a worth while risk.

Can Byron Buxton Finish His Career Like Adrian Beltré?
Heiny replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ok, here is my prediction! Bucky plays 100 games of stellar cf this year with 40 more games as DH. Bats .280 with 40 HR and .980 OPS and scores 120 runs and win MVP. Remember, you heard it here first. -
It's time to trade Gordon for prospects or package him with Larnach and E-Rod for starting pitching prospect. Martin should be a better replacement for Gordon. Gordon is on his last leg with the Twins as we have way better options that are ready or will be soon. Might as well get something for him before he has to be DFA'd.

Will The Twins Get Their Postseason SP?
Heiny commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
I would take a chance on Bauer. He knows he has to behave. If he don't he gets cut. Super low risk at min salary. Super high rewards possible. Go for it. -
I think that if the Twins could trade Gordon it would have been done by now. I don't think anybody feels like Gordon could help their team. He may have to be included in a larger package. Package may also include Larnach. I had really high hopes and expectations for Larnach but I am starting to sour considering he will be 27 years old. I still think he could help a team and hit some massive homers, but I think his time with the Twins will be coming to an end soon. Martin needs to get a chance in the big leagues and I think Miranda needs another chance also when healthy. All of the above could do themselves a huge favor by going off big in spring training. Well, I guess that is why we are so interested. Let the battles begin.

Projections, Comps, and Royce Lewis's Future
Heiny replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree 100%. Very difficult to make comparisons on such a small sample size. But if we're gonna play this game, I'll comp him to a combination of Boggs/Schmidt/Brett. YEAH, that's what I'll do. -
I hope that DeSclafani pitches lights out for two years and the Twins can't afford to keep him after '25. Then, we would have had two great seasons, and all the pissers and moaners can eat their words. I guess I just despise negativity, and we get a lot of it here.
