Can the Twins Regain Momentum This Spring?
sweetmusicviola16 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Count me as optimistic, since this is the best team in the Central and very likely will win it. But at the same time I am not as excited about the team as I am optimistic. The pitching pieces that we are raving about are either unproven or mehh. Santana and Margot are mehh. There is no way that I can honestly tell myself that the FO improved this team. But here is how I see the Central: Chicago will win a small number more games. I don't see them being that bad again. I can see Cleveland winning another game or two or three. KC, will be better. No they aren't going to make up 30 games. But 15? 20? Maybe. It is very logical that some of the wins these teams have over last season will come against the Twins. Detroit however will be very tough. As has been mentioned on here before, if our youngsters can improve so can Detroit's. Twins win the division by a game or two. That's my optimism. When we could have widened the gap we allowed it to narrow. But we'll enjoy the season either way.- 32 replies

After reading more of the article and I now know that no one actually died, with 17 injuries, the roster would now appear to be in flux rather than set in stone as it had been. So perhaps guys like Martin, Lee, Kiersay, EmRod could still make the opening day roster. Maybe even Jenkins could??? Who would have thought that such a disaster would be the break that some of these young guys needed. No matter how you slice it, crazy things can happen in baseball.

My post won't be an apology for Larnach, he will need to prove it in AAA. Or in a different organization. He is soon to be behind his present peers in the pecking order and those coming up soon, Jenkins, EmRod, Winokur. But when I look at his numbers he did improve his OBP, Slg and OPS in 2023. SLG and OPS were career highs. Not that he was good, I'm not suggesting so, but sadly Santana's numbers were only marginally better than those of 2023 Larnach and of Larnach's career. This for his bounce back year. Yeah. OK. Uninspiring, to say the least. But imo if Larnach can have a bounce back year in AAA St.Paul he will and should be moved onto another organization this summer. Either way his days in MN will soon come to an end. Kind of sad really.

The thing is a Miranda for example could hit .525 this spring in ST games. It wouldn't matter. He's not making opening day regardless. And if he scuffled the first 3-4 weeks in St.Paul and an injury occurred on the Twins someone would very likely pass him up despite the hot spring. I believe that applies to pretty much anyone who's not on the team right now. Very very little is actually up for grabs in Fort Meyers this spring. It's strictly training imo.

It honestly doesn't matter how anyone does this spring. The roster is set. Do your reps. Go to AAA and wait for an injury.

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
sweetmusicviola16 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kiriloff's bat is elite. Of course when healthy. However, he hasn't yet proven himself to be "injury prone." I want to see that bat in the lineup as much as possible in 2024. We will be a better team because of that. My bet also is that he will prove to be at least league average with the glove. Maybe even better. Santana can play a role on the team. But if its a starring one my bet is that means the team will be a worse one.- 80 replies

He has an opinion. I can't say I disagree with him at all on Margot. We didn't need him. As for the Miller Doncon swap, I liked Miller a lot too. I don't like losing him. I hope Doncon makes good on this deal.

Thanks. Doncan is a good get. He's what we hoped for with the loss of Miller.

I'm fine with the prospect we received in Doncan. That doesn't mean that I have to think well of Margot. Imo he's a mehhh player. I for one wanted to see if we had a player in Martin and give one more shot to Larnach. Now we have those guys blocked. I hope the deal works.

For all of the talk about how healthy Buxton is he has yet to make an appearance in the first 4 exhibition games. Yes I know they are exhibitions. Still. Other regulars have appeared. Just a bit concerning to me.

One other question I have on this trade, does this throw some doubt on the health of Buxton at all? As I recall we acquired Taylor late off season as well and he ended up being our CF. I hope Buxton is well. Always seem to use the word hope with Buxton.

Also makes you wonder how little they think of Martin too at the same time.

What ever happened to her, did you keep up with her? That's sad. Yeah, LAD seems to usually come out on top in these deals.

Martin and Larnach are now AAA and delegated to injury replacements I can assume.

I really liked Miller. I don't care about any cash. Margot has not ever been that much of a hitter. So so. I hope the prospect is good. Sorry to see Miller gone.

First of all, forget about 200 IP Bailey. Give us 165 solid IP again and that is plenty enough. Get us to the WS and you'll add another 25 or so on top of that. As for Ashby that is a very poor comp imo. Bailey has actually been good an has pitched. Ashby has not. I would venture to say that Ober will reach 20 million in his 3 years of arb alone. As for buying out 2-4 years of FA, he knows that meh SP are getting 12-14 mil per season, like Ashby. I doubt that he would sell those off too cheaply though. 7/75

Why am I a fan of this (fake) poverty franchise?
sweetmusicviola16 replied to AZDane's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Carl Pohlad got his start by foreclosing on poor farmers during the Depression. What a great legacy to leave behind. -
E Rod with a hit, RBI and a BOB. It's only just begun.

This is a very good post. Fair, objective and accurate. Kiriloff is one of the very best hitters on this team. Plain and simple, when healthy. Personally though it would make me gag if Kiriloff were traded for a back of the rotation piece or a filler piece, which is likely AK's present value, while we carry 38 y/o Santana on the team.
-
Kiriloff is an MVP type of hitter. But he does need to stay healthy and on the field. It would be a poor move to deal him when value is low. We are at the point of letting him burn out entirely or reaping the reward of his talent. My vote is to keep him. Unless you get a TOR SP for him, which you would not get today.
