  1. Right, give me the bottom guy. That's stroman, right? Much less volatility there. He won't win a Cy Young, but that sinker will play for years. Ray has strikeout stuff, but gives up lots of walks and homers.
  2. Personally, I'd pay more for Stroman than Robbie Ray. Stroman has had one bad year. Ray has had two good years and like 4-5 bad years.
  3. Does Nick Gordon play short when Taylor plays CF then?
  4. Agreed, but I don't think Torii has either the high peak or overall counting stats to be in. Kenny Lofton has 68 WAR and is not in the HOF. Jim Edmonds-8 gold gloves, 393 HR's, 60 WAR, not in HOF. If Andruw Jones (62 WAR) and Jim Edmonds can't get in, Torii (50 WAR) has no chance.
  5. Generally 60 WAR is the line. If under 60, you're looking for extra reasons to put that guy in. (postseason heroics? underrepresented position? Early injury/high peak guy?) Over 60, you're looking for reasons to NOT vote that guy in. (PED's, Schilling's politics, Pete Rose)
  6. Agreed, but Andruw Jones is the best defensive centerfielder ever (he also has 434 HR's) and doesn't look like he'll get voted in. If Jones doesn't get in, there's no road for Torii to get in. I'd vote yes on Jones, no on Torii.
  7. The fact that the MLB commissioner who purposely turned a blind eye to blatant PED use in MLB is in the HOF means the deserving players should probably not be penalized any more. At least, the players who didn't break MLB substance rules or fail a test for a substance they knew was banned.
  8. Isn't the case for PED's and Big Papi the same as it is for Sammy Sosa and PED's? Same NY Times article reporting the anonymous test. What I don't understand is voting for Ortiz but not voting for Sosa. It's not the corked bat thing. It's because one is likable and one isn't. "Likeability" should not put you in or out of the HOF, IMO. Maybe Ortiz doesn't get in but the consensus seems to be that he will waltz right in first or second ballot.
  9. If Wagner gets in, Nathan should. Nathan was easily the second best closer of his era, and the best closer was the first unanimous HOF selection in history. I don't think he gets voted in by the writers though. Like Johan Santana, he'll get in eventually but will be a veteran's committee selection.
  10. Twins fleeced TB in the Odorizzi trade and the Cruz trade.
  11. My point wasn't whether they're rebuilding or trying to contend, my point was that Chapman doesn't make sense with either option. Of course, the front office has said the team isn't rebuilding, and I will judge whether they are by what moves are made this offseason. You still have to play the games; I wouldn't have said the Giants or Mariners were contenders for 2020 but the Giants then went out and won 109 games and the Mariners almost made the playoffs.
  12. I don't see Chapman as an upgrade for 2022, nor do I see him as a long-term rebuild option, so I don't think this makes sense. If the Twins are going to try and contend in 2022, they need to keep Donaldson at 3rd, with days off at DH. His bat still plays.
  13. The numbers we're hearing probably aren't related at all to what is actually going on. I know Jim's group isn't cheap. They will pay to keep Buxton if Derek and Thad think it's worth it. I think Derek and Thad aren't sure that paying Buxton a 100million dollar guaranteed contract is a good idea. I'm not sure it's a good idea either.
  14. I'd feel a bit disappointed if the Twins trade Buck this offseason, just because that signals the Twins won't be competitive in 2022, and also because I won't get to watch Buxton play next year. The return is also not going to be great, because it's only for one year of a guy who doesn't stay on the field and will earn about 10 million in 2022, so it's not like he's cheap. My position on this is clear: Generally, you don't sign large guaranteed contracts to frequently injured outfielders who rely on speed to determine their value. Injuries just don't go away. Speed does go away. Buxton is not going to suddenly become durable in his 30's. If he hits, he could have value playing a corner spot, but corner outfielders who can hit are not hard to find.
  15. If the Twins roll with Gordon or Maggi as the opening day shortstop, then I expect them to have also traded Buxton, Kepler, Donaldson and Sano and committed to a full rebuild.
  16. There's a lot of comps between Verlander's stuff in his 30's and some other Houston pitcher by the name of Nolan. That other guy pitched pretty well in his late 30's and early 40's.
  17. Yep, some of them work out, some of them don't. My point is the Twins historically have searched more for "value" than "sign the best guy." Nothing necessarily wrong with that if you develop your own pitching.
  18. Kershaw isn't an ace any more. That doesn't mean he isn't valuable, as he will be very good when he pitches, but I think he either goes back to LAD, goes home to Texas, or retires.
  19. Probably because that's what the Twins do in free agency. Sign #3 starting pitchers and hope they work out. Phil Hughes, Ricky Nolasco, Ervin Santana, Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey, Nick Blackburn, J.A. Happ, Michael Pineda, the list goes on.
  20. Mauer will get in easily. Probably second ballot. Depends on what the voters do with A-rod. I'm not sure I would vote for Molina (not a good hitter, only 42 bWAR, and I wouldn't vote for Omar Vizquel either) or Posey (only 44 bWAR and not enough counting stats).
  21. Here's mine. (Edited to reflect higher price for Gausman) Gray gets 4/60. Stroman gets 5/100. Buxton extended- 6 years, 120m, backloaded and incentive driven. He gets 10 this year. I'm bringing back Simmons because he played well while the team was near the division lead and he's a good bounce back candidate. Happy with this bullpen and rotation. Dobnak, when healthy and not jerked around by team plans, has been more effective than Pineda. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-XChUZHAKmTFWms2MjhZ31d9L8Mqrm1UQhDUQbCglhs/edit?usp=sharing
  22. I'd think more than 1/100. Strasberg did. Mark Prior did. Harper was drafted as a 17 year old and then won ROY at age 19 by playing every day. Garrett Crochet was drafted last year and pitched for CWS last year. Just off the top of my head...
  23. He was picked in 2015 and played in MLB the very next year. In 2017 he played every day. I don't recall the Twins promoting this aggressively, even with college players. When has a draft pick made an MLB debut the next year for the Twins?
  24. Without looking it up...I think Ozzie Smith would be the leader in career defensive WAR, right? Brooks Robinson has to be up there too. Simmons actually has an outside HOF chance but needs to play 3-5 more years at 3 WAR or so. That will not happen if he has more seasons like 2021 obviously.
