    I know the Twins have been worse than dreadful in clutch hitting, but does anyone know if someone has been keeping track of the whiffs in those situations? It must also be a dreadful statistic (I'd really like to know...) I rather have the double play ground ball to be honest. At least the batter made contact. The whiff is so demoralizing.

    I think the Twins now lead the league in moral victories! Maybe they can get some more of those when they hit the links the first week of October ?

    I didn't lay the middle game loss on Lopez. Sure he made a terrible pitch to Rubenless Sierra (the guy's a slap hitter, so his entire at bat is just stick the bat out... I'm curious who wanted the pitch on the outside corner...). Nevertheless, why we have our worst outfielder in the game in the 9th inning is the troubling part. Cave or Celestino should be in the game to protect the lead. There was no reason for Gordon to dive there. Only one run scores if you keep the ball in front of you. Tunnel vision earlier in the game by micromanaging the percentages of who should hit against who (we had the lead) contributed to one the worst losses of the season because our best defensive team was not on the field in the 9th.

    Thanks for this! It was a fun read. I had blotted Eric Fox from my mind, but just reading his name caused a flashback. I feared the A's that year. I knew they were a much better team than the Twins, but that poke in the eye by Eric Fox was really the beginning of the end.

    Preach it! This is fundamental baseball. I hate to always look back to the 80s and 90s, but Tom Kelly would not tolerate bad baserunning, especially by the players. If you screwed up on the basepaths, you might find yourself on the bench for a game to reflect.

    Although the Angels are arguably the worst decision-making team at the trade deadline year-in-year out (worse than the Twins), they have to be thinking about moving Ohtani. As Jeff Passan has mentioned, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to keep him because he won't want to sign after 2023 after another -.500 year with the Angels looming, which is likely to be the storyline for at least a couple of more years beyond that. The Angels, maybe more than any other team, have been such poor decision-makers over the years that their farm-system is years away from producing any MLB talent. Are they ready to infuse the upper level of their farm system with some talent that is closer to being ready for the big leagues along with a couple of players that are already at the MLB level? I would say the Twins should throw in the kitchen sink to get Ohtani to sign for 3-5 years. Yes, that would be a bit painful, but that duel threat is something one could only dream about. What would it take? A lot! And the payout would be quite large, but it would be worth it IMHO. I also think Ohtani-san would be more than willing to come to the Twins with Maeda already in the fold. Having another Japanese player to talk with is a hidden advantage. Here is my proposal: Kepler, either Larnach or Kiriloff, and two pitchers from the minors with high upside. Would this move the Angels? Four for one player? Is it enough? (I'm sure some teams would be willing to go down this road.) What do you think?

    To be honest, this has been one of the more bizarre topics to have dominated TD IMHO. A week after the cheering subsided, I was already seeing posts about trading Correa at the deadline. If that is the position, there seems to be no reason to even sign him in the first place, does there?

    I don't even see the purpose. We needed to get stronger up the middle, not get another left fielder irrespective of his upside. This year, we have a very good SS, a decent 3rd baseman, a mediocre 2nd baseman and a mediocre 1st baseman (speaking from strictly fielding). If we get Soto, who plays SS--Nick Gordon?? No way. If we get Correa for one year that's great and if we can get him for three years, even better. Soto, even if he wanted to come here (which I find highly unlikely), is a pipedream that will hurt the Twins in the short term, and maybe even in the long run.

I would request reporters to start asking more interesting questions or players to start giving more interesting responses AM: What's it like knowing that as 7-8-9 hitters you are still actually professional ball players who are better than 6th grade pony leaguers? Explain to me how that is possible? Did you realize you actually got some hits during this two game series? GU: So many good questions. Thank you for letting me know. I didn't know that I even got on base. Did I score any runs? (AM head nodding) Wow. I thought that was last year when I was still on the Yankees. It's good to know that I am still on the team and contributing. AM: How big is it knowing that Sonny Gray can pitch like he did today? GU: Sonny Gray? Oh he's a legend. I love the way he plays trumpet. Is he still around? When did he become a baseball player? Anyway, playing the trumpet and pitching...that's huge! AM: You ran through a stop sign. What about that? GU: Yeah, I know but I live on kind of a quiet street and there aren't any cops around most of the time, so I sometimes just roll through...Wait, how do you know that?

    Nice wrap up Nick. We do need one arm that is more-or-less reliable. I also agree that Pagán has taken a lot of heat, but there were few options available, so that simply emphasizes the need (see I do defend Baldelli when I think he is not at fault). I actually kind of hoped Baldelli would let Duran-Duran take one more inning in the extra inning fiasco, but I can understand not wanting Duran-Duran to get three plus innings as well.

    A win is a win. I'm glad we didn't just tie it up in the 9th. That said, the bullpen wasn't bad. The throw by Polanco though...yikes!

    Yay! Actually Les Straker gave us the 5 innings he was asked to give. The bullpen disintegrated in that game against the Cardinals.

    What's the deal with Duran and not throwing the fastball? He threw one to Judge and then threw nothing but breakers and sinkers (11 straight pitches). If I'm any hitter, the only pitch I don't want from Duran is the 103 mph express.

    This! Of course, Trov is absolutely right. Game 3 epitomized exactly how we play again the Yankees most of the time. One can't sugarcoat the fact that the Twins play differently against the Yankees. If they can't figure this out, they will never go further in the playoffs. It's almost like there is this fear brewing just below the surface and it becomes exposed once the Yankees start making noise. Dare I say it is a mental block. Was there any doubt about the Yankees coming back and winning the game? (It's not other east coast teams that we have problems with; it's the Yankees in particular.) We play the Rays and no such problems, who interestingly enough have no fear of the Yankees themselves--they win some and lose some.

    I meant to be a little hyperbolic but intended to say 5 or 6, but 4 or 5 is more accurate, so I say touche to you. As for Duffey, I stand by my position. Let the Twins Daily crowd trash Duffey publicly all they want, but take care of the matter internally.
