Good article. Thing is, the Twins have plenty of arms either on the roster or in the wings, but no guarantees. Their best bets are Ryan and Duran, two youngsters, as a starter and a closer. A top-of-the-line starter who could also be a mentor to young pitchers would be ideal. Not too many of those. I'd like to see them sign Correa long term. That would limit payroll for pitching, but the competition is the Astros and the Yankees if the Series is the goal, and we all saw what the Astros just accomplished (and this time without cheating, we presume). Baldelli needs to free himself from pitch counts with his starters, and tell his pitchers so; otherwise, Blyleven2011 might well be right about Gray wanting out of the organization.

Baldelli is a robot. He coaches by stats. It's one reason why Cleveland, with the elder whiz Terry Francona at the helm, whizzed past the moribund Twins as if they were standing still. Francona uses stats but also his experience. These Twins reclamation projects seldom pay off. As for Pagan, one definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing when it doesn't work. By that rubric, the FO and Baldelli are insane. There's no excuse for the Twin collapse in September. Losing 7 of 8 at crunch time to Cleveland is unforgivable. What I don't know is whether Baldelli is as robotic as he seems or whether that's his contract with the FO and he doesn't dare veer from it for fear of unemployment.

Will the Twins Pursue Aaron Judge?
Thebigalguy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nope. We know Correa likes it in Minnesota. Let's pursue him long term. He fits, he gives good value, he's a mentor, and all the rest we've seen this year. ABC in the lineup would be nice, for sure. -
Ryan is fun to watch when he's on. Correa parked his minibus here for a year; wish it could be longer. I've tuned out the Twins when they collapsed, but next spring they'll be tied for first at 0-0 and I'll be on board.

Are Reinforcements Close Enough for the Twins?
Thebigalguy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've had to scratch my head at the paltry offense and inability to hit with RISP. It's truly pathetic right now. Teams like to say that hitting is contagious. So are slumps. Five runs in four games against the Rangers? There's no excuse for that in God's heaven or Satan's hell, so I suppose that means right now the Twins are in purgatory. All of them should be batting off tees as I write these words. They can't do anything about umps who call balls strikes, of course, but they can learn again to hit line drives instead of grounders and fly outs. Garlick will help. The others? Meh. They all need noogies to wake them up.- 41 replies

Who is the Twins 2022 Rookie of the Year?
Thebigalguy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree. (He came, he saw, he concurred.) I’d like to see Ryan become a Greg Maddox type bulldog to compensate for his average velocity. Until then, Miranda and Duran are my guys.- 31 replies

They’re on the brink of dropping off the map. Something has got to give. There’s no synergy. September is crunch time with so many games against competitors, but they need to stay close until then.

Ranking the Twins Most Needed IL Players
Thebigalguy replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kepler is clearly struggling since his return. He's not hitting with a fractured toe the way he did before the injury, though a few of his outs have been hard hit balls. The season in September will involve lots of games with the Guardians and Sox and will decide whether we make the postseason. And Correa's slump? He's not injured, is he? Of the fearsome A B C, it's only A who comes through on an everyday basis, along with a few other younger players. This is a strange season, is what I'm saying, and injuries are only part of it at the plate. (I almost think it would have made more sense to put Buxton on the IL for two weeks than try 'managing' his bad knee.) On the mound, having Ober, Winder, and Maeda back could be big. Time will tell, as it always does.- 43 replies

Does it Matter How the Twins Reach the Postseason?
Thebigalguy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is not a team that’s playoff worthy. Even so, get there and there’s a chance to win a series. With Correa MIA, it’s a hard kayak to steer. We need the cavalry on the mound. We need Kepler to wake up. I’m developing doubts about Baldelli. He’s not playing, though. I’m calling it 50-50.- 31 replies

Where Did the Good Carlos Correa Go?
Thebigalguy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If he can get back on track against the Dodgers, all is forgiven. This is the week when first place is on the line. -
The bigwigs don't want the Twins to win the division. We'll see more calls like this down the line when the referees can get away with it. Not that it matters: they should have won the game in the bottom of the ninth. But not to worry: this is the week the Twins either prove themselves against the best team in MLB or find themselves in second place come next weekend.

Ranking the Top-5 Twins by Trade Value
Thebigalguy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great fun to read after deadline. It’s almost mid-August and we’re still in first, though just barely thanks to blown saves and too many RISP left on base, but even so still there.- 29 replies

Could Carlos Correa Opt Back in for 2023?
Thebigalguy replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If he opts in, it gives Royce Lewis more time to come of age and heal fully playing part-time. Win win. I agree that a long term deal makes zero sense, but another year playing and mentoring would be great.- 88 replies

Good analysis, good comments: thanks. I agree that Baldelli isn't the best at handling his pitching staff, especially now that he no longer has a premier pitching coach for collaboration. Last night it made no sense to remove Ryan after five innings with his pitch count unless there's something wrong with Ryan, though maybe Baldelli wanted to try out the new tools in his toolbox. The Guardians are only a game behind, and the Sox are still very much in the mix, so we'll see how it plays when the Twins play those two teams; so far, aren't they, like, 2-10? I expect the bullpen now to have a much better save percentage; without all the blown saves, the Twins would be running away with the division. As for the lost prospects, one never knows down the line how they'll perform for sure until they reach the bigs. The Twins have an opportunity now to get into the playoffs and win a series, however dim their chances to get past the Yanks or Astros, and the 40 man roster can only protect so many players when so many young prospects are now with the Twins and proving they belong. So yeah, plaudits to the FO. They did what they had to do and what almost every Twins fan thought they had to do.

Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez
Thebigalguy replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This should help the cause, assuming he doesn't revert to form. Strange that he failed so miserably as a starter, but the article doesn't say how he did the first time through MLB lineups or whether he's developed nuance and a better repertoire to assist his fast ball. Either way, the cost is expensive, but let's face it: a 40 man roster can only have 40 names on it, so some prospects worth their weight would/will be lost anyway if they're not traded.- 113 replies

Have the Twins Seen the End of Miguel Sano?
Thebigalguy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He’s exasperating. He doesn’t seem teachable. It used to be boom or bust, but now it’s SO and you’re OUT. ML pitchers don’t have to throw him strikes anymore. Once, the fellow could a been a contender.- 37 replies

It's a lousy division. I still want the Twins to win it. To do so, they have to win games and matchups. Can't do it giving up 7-10 runs a game. Spahn and Sain and pray for rain? Here, it's Ryan and Gray and just plain pray. What a mess the pitching staff is. So many what ifs: what if they'd kept Rogers? Berrios? Since that's water under the bridge, I say bring up the best pitchers they have in the Small to the Big and let's see what happens. Ober and Duran's arms will give out if they continue to be overused because the other options blow games big time on a daily basis. Deal. Promote. Fire. Wake up the dingbats: a little craziness won't hurt. Give Baldelli a few shots of caffeine.

Minnesota Twins Activate Slugger Miguel Sano
Thebigalguy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The exciting thing about Sano is that he's streaky and might be hot right now, which could make a difference on a team that leaves too many RISP. Buxton, remember, only batted .166 this July with an injury and old, bad habits reasserting themselves at the plate but nobody's complaining except me because his power and bad ball hitting sometimes save the day, but he has an act that needs cleaning up once his knee feels better. Sano at his best would be a godsend in August, or good trade bait if he's hot this week. Que sera sera. What will be will be.- 60 replies

Can't see it. Interesting to think about, but can't see it. Correa's age, yes, I'm also thinking they offered Soto $440 million knowing he wouldn't take it. It gives the team an out to trade him without completely alienating the fan base, who are alienated already. Correa is with the Twins because he didn't get the kind of offer that Soto did and, in my opinion, won't get it. Besides, the Twins would be renting Soto, since a mid-market team won't give him the kind of money he thinks he can get elsewhere. Better to keep Correa, if they can, for two more years or sign him long term if possible, since we know he fits among the vets and youngsters. Boras is also Correa's agent, right? Basically, he parked Correa in Minnesota in hopes of a better market next year or the year after that. My hope is the Twins get relief pitching and an additional starter for redundant prospects. The big question now is Royce Lewis at short. Also a Boras client. Que sera sera. What will be will be.

Week in Review: Back in Business
Thebigalguy replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Kepler's toe needs healing, bring in Sano and see what he's got. Otherwise, adios, it was sure good to know you. And I mean that, from the bottom of my heart, when he was good. But when he was bad, he was bad. I hope whatever he had at his worst wasn't catching, because Buxton's average in July was way under the Mendoza line. Their Method acting yields big bombs and good surprises, but it sure would be nice to have stars who are methodical and consistent, a power-hungry version of Arraez.- 20 replies

Minnesota’s 3 Options with Carlos Correa
Thebigalguy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It would be bad faith to trade Correa unless the team collapses. He's good in the clubhouse. It's all hands on deck for the rest of the year. I agree with those who point out the Twins won't get much for a rental. A first-place team doesn't throw in the towel by trading one of their stars. Boras is his agent and is also Lewis's agent. Given the latter's injuries, there's no certainty he can be the long answer at short. As for a long term deal, my guess is that Correa and Boras might be amenable to it if the market doesn't give them what they want, but won't sign on now to a (relatively) team-friendly contract. Look at the hardball Boras and Soto are playing. No, Correa is a Twin this year. Let's keep him and figure out the pitching. -
Do the Twins Have Anything to Trade?
Thebigalguy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nobody's trading Correa. The MLB draft just took place. The Twins could bundle their top two or three draft picks for a top shelf starter from a team in the doldrums with no playoff hopes this year. Fact is, I have little faith in FO, given how recent trades have turned out. Instead of Rogers, we have a guy with Tommy John and Pagan, a true disaster at present. With Duran and Rogers as set up and closer, we have a dozen more victories than we do right now. It's frustrating.- 24 replies

Get to Know Twins Draft Pick Brooks Lee
Thebigalguy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
You can never know anymore, but this player with his pedigree and skills will make a place for himself in MLB, whether eventually with the Twins or elsewhere. I'd trade him right now for a MLB-ready top shelf starting pitcher.
