  1. Right now I am just looking forward to, or rather imagining/hoping/wishing for a healthy full season from Royce Lewis, Buxton, and Correa. Would that be wonderful or what?
  2. Leon was a handy backup catcher for us that one year. As you noted, he will always be able to find a team that needs his talents, even if he has to languish in AAA, waiting for that callup.
  3. An interesting idea, and I certainly understand both sides of the issue, and as a result, well, I'm sitting on the fence! Of course it's a VERY tantalizing idea of converting/switching Duran back to a starters role. We don't see arms like his very often. And what's the worse that can happen? He struggles and ends up back in the bullpen, or naturally another injury is a concern. But it could end up being a John Smoltz sort of situation; great starter becomes a great relief pitcher, and then returns to being a starter. But, all that said and done, I'd be shocked if the Twins try and let him start some games. He's a weapon in the bullpen and I think that's where he'll stay.
  4. No idea if this rumor/announcement will happen, but assuming that there is a sincere attempt at getting it done, just how long will such a deal take to get finalized? Those of you with some knowledge of the broadcasting industry may know the timeline, I certainly don't. But this off-season will basically be over in 1 more month, and I'm very skeptical that any sort of new TV deal will happen in time for the Twins front office to have more money spend on free agents. So basically, I still see us as non-participants for any free agent bidding wars.
  5. Is Astudillo still playing in Japan?
  6. Ah, Jesse Crain is a name I haven't thought of in many, many years! Interesting comparison. But hey, Jesse had a few good years in the bullpen, so I'd certainly accept performance of that quality.
  7. I wonder how many Minnesota baseball-loving parents named their new baby Zoilo in 1965 or 1966?
  8. I wish Gipson-Long all the best of luck with Detroit .... but, ugh, not TOO much luck. I'd hate to see him turn into an All-Star and have this trade turn into another one of those horrible Twins transactions.
  9. Good post, and good questions. Other than Lopez, and to a less extent Ryan, the rest of these guys haven't pitched a lot of innings each year. Yet another reason for some reinforcements, or at least one very durable and effective arm in the rotation. Seems like we are wishing and hoping a bit too much otherwise.
  10. I remember those years with Gardner as manager. Seemed like a good man. Sad to hear about his passing.
  11. Polanco can certainly put up better numbers, but the health issues really are a concern. How durable will he be in the near future? Farmer is more versatile, or so it seems to me, and is also less injury prone. I am still in awe of his ability to come back so quickly after that horrific HBP last year. Frankly, I'd like to keep both players, but it appears that Polo might have more trade value, plus you have to factor in his expiring contract. But ... if we don't get something worthwhile, there is no sense in just trading him for the sake of shedding his salary.
  12. Interesting comparisons, and they are good ones. But I still keep wondering: does any other team really want Max Kepler? Seems like he is very underrated, especially compared to the salaries that lesser players are getting, but I'm still dubious that he has a lot of trade value.
  13. I'm gonna take my Tommy Lasorda bobblehead out of storage and ask my Haitian friend to put a special voodoo curse on the Dodgers this year!
  14. Yeah, those "good old days" or revolving outfielders. Sigh. I sure hope there is some stability at that position this year.
  15. Yeah, we didn't get Paddack back until late September last year. The recovery time is certainly not an exact science.
  16. And about 6 weeks from Spring Training!
  17. The Reds have been one of the more active teams this off-season. Will be interesting to see how some of those oddball signings pan out for them.
  18. Yeah, that could be correct. The increase in homers was unexpected, as was his higher strike out rate. I like Taylor as a player, especially with his defense, but I don't see a fit with the Twins this year. We need to give Martin and chance and/or see if Gordon has what it takes. And then there is this guy named Buxton ... just saying.
  19. Good post and some interesting ideas. I'm also starting to think the Twins will most likely go with their current depth (Martin, Goodrum, Gordon, maybe even Larnach) to fill the holes in the outfield or as backups in case Buxton isn't able to play the field much. Not as much reason to sign any other infielders or outfielders this year. But ... the original post stated: I expect that the current five-man rotation will be among the best in the American League. Huh? That comment caused me to twitch a bit. As things stand, I don't think our starting rotation is anywhere near the best in the league. I'm expecting Lopez to pitch well, and I have high hopes for Paddack and Ryan, and to a lesser extent Ober and Varland, but there are just too many question marks with that bunch. Maybe maybe maybe they will all perform to expectations, or hopefully exceed those expectations, but I still think we need to find a Lopez-like arm in a trade. No easy task, I know, but unless we find that extra something, this season may end up being a very frustrating one for the Twins fans.
  20. Frankly, I had never even heard of Brebbia before reading this post, but he seems like the only logical and affordable option that is presented. But hey, we still need that starting pitcher. I don't think Stroman is, or should be, the answer.
  21. I second that emotion. If he's going anywhere, Kepler won't be in Seattle.
  22. Playing for the Yankees sure didn't help Gallo, Gray, or Pavano. And our old buddy Josh Donaldson didn't exactly thrive there either. Aaron Hicks did okay for a few years there, but he seemed to regain his mojo again last year after he LEFT NYC. Must be something in the air ... or just playing in Yankee Stadium in front of big rowdy crowds? Maybe a dream for some players and a difficult adjustment for others.
  23. Ouch! Those comparisons made me cringe! But both of those guys were indeed highly touted prospects who just never adjusted to MLB.
  24. And at the time, I don't recall a whole lot of anguish or regrets from the Twins faithful. Of course, over the next several seasons, the regrets suddenly surged! Ah, hindsight is a wonderful thing. If only the front office's crystal ball had been working properly, then the Twins might have enjoyed at least a few years of productive Ortiz (until free agency of course). But we still needed pitching!
