  1. I give Molitor a C+ for his career. As for this year, I give him a B- because he has done all he could to keep this team from being 52-78 at this point- considering what we have lost over the season in terms of manpower. Heck, the last I looked we were only 7 games under .500. While that is not what we want, it isn't the worst possible scenario. Yes, the bullpen is overworked but show me a team whose bullpen isn't. What I do not understand is why a reliever cannot work 2 innings instead of just one. THAT overworks any pen. we could do better but we could also do worse. The players seem to believe in him and that is big. What we need are better players since we traded away 2 of them. I blame management much more than I do Molly.
  2. Rather than break the trades all down, I'll rate the entire block as a B+. I hope we can get Escobar back and would not even pass on Lynn if nobody else will sign with us. We did get a few prospects who could make an impact in 2 years plus Austin who should help some. I believe we'll trade Rodney in August. I do not see Forsythe as being all that terrible though he is not worth the money he gets. He could be a .250+, 12-15 HR guy but will probably never play regularly for us. We still need established pitching and we do not have that right now. And when we do get a well pitched game (Gibson, Mejia), we don't hit. Right now we are lucky the division is weak but that won't last much longer. The prospects need to become more than suspects.
  3. My doctor (a Yankees fan) also thinks I'm delusional for rooting for the Twins. I think Machado wants to play short but we probably won't spend THAT kind of money. We'll see (and I'll keep rooting for the Twins).
  4. Dozier was, by far, NOT the reason the Twins have lagged behind. Try Sano, Buxton, Lynn (especially early), Santana's absense, continual failures of middle relievers and Morrison. They are the real reasons we are not in contention. Dozier was hot early but his numbers are only a little bit short of his lifetime averages.
  5. My take on the trades. I would not have traded Escobar who was valuable for the many positions he plays and as a decent hitter. I would have signed him for 2 years if they even made an offer. The others were expendable, though Lynn also could have been made an offer. He missed Spring training and thus was bad in the first month but decent after that (except for a recent slump that they all go through). It would not surprise me to see him do much better- especially next year. Dozier was really expendable because, even though he hits a lot of home runs, he is making too much money. I never really liked Duke but he was effective after a slow start. It seems we got a few possible decent hitters and one pitcher who could make an impact down the road. As with all trades, we won't know until a year or two. Our minor leagues are not doing well overall and do not seem to be able to give us anyone for next year at this time. Just my take.
  6. I would not touch Lucroy as he is overpaid right now and on the downside. Flowers would have to be a trade and sign deal. Realmuto would be great but the asking price would be very high. There have been several catchers on the waiver wire that could help if needed and even if we have to use one from the minors early, that would not be so horrible. I don't see us making the playoffs this year so we have to look at who is going to help us next year and the year after. I would not mortgage the farm.
  7. Yes the season is long and yes there is still time in this very weak division. However, I don't think we are better than Cleveland and I don't think we can get to the Wild Card since we probably aren't better than the Angels, Mariners, Yankees or Red Sox- 2 of which will probably make it. Maybe our best hope is to catch the Indians once all our injured players get back to health. Crossing my fingers that this ends this weekend vs the White Sox. I don't think we will beat Stroman today even though he has not been very good.
  8. When things are going bad, there is almost nothing you can do to fix it but just hope it fixes itself. We have had some key injuries, relief pitchers have no command and are walking first batters (you can never do that), Morrison has been a bust (even worse than Park- wherever he is), the defense has been like watching a little league game (this is the most surprising thing) and the starters have been lousy (except for Gibson). The good thing is that the division is very weak and even Cleveland is not playing well. However, I don't think we will ever catch them even when we start to win again. Now the questions are a)which Twins team is the real one (the first 13 games or the recent games)? and are we already out of the Wild Card contention? With the Yankees/Red Sox battle and the Angels/Mariners battle, we may be toast for this year.
  9. Interesting article. I think Berrios will be a top pitcher this year while the others will be fair to middlin. It will be interesting to see if we will need help from the minor league pitchers and how much they will contribute. Mejia should have made the team but will benefit from pitching regularly. Enns looks like a good prospect.
  10. Polanco is not as big a loss as everyone thinks though it may hurt more in the post season (cannot understand why he is not eligible). Escobar and Adrianza can easily fill the gap. Castro is way under-rated and should hit more than 10 home runs but his catching ability is more important. Mauer is also somewhat under-rated for power while Morrison will probably hit around 25-28 home runs. I would imagine that someone else will be needed at some point during the season (Gordon?).
  11. Castro will probably hit .235 with 14-18 home runs. Garver is an unknown quantity but cannot be counted on for much over .250 at this time. The main thing is staying healthy because Castro does more to help our pitchers than most catcher could. A good defensive catcher is a must for us to win. I'm sure management will name or find a number 3 catcher to be ready at Rochester just in case.
  12. Dozier is a very good second baseman and a very good power hitter but one player does not make a team. While the Twins have probably made a mistake by not extending him earlier, we will see if he becomes trade bait in July- whether we are in it or not. If we need a starter, he could bring a good one from the NL or even another AL contender. Gordon is almost ready and could step in if necessary.
  13. It is way too early to predict who will make the team as there still could be trades made. I like Aybar for his versatility but he is on the downside of his career. I do not like Duke though he is a veteran. I hope he doesn't take away a good kid's spot that we could lose. The issue with the Twins is not who will make the roster but are guys like Escobar and Rosario for real. They made good strides last year but can they come close to those numbers again? Let's hope so. Rodney scares me and I can see Reed becoming the real closer before it is all done. I like Vargas but he doesn't produce- especially from the right side. And Pressley may need a better pitching coach. With his stuff, there is no excuse for him not blossoming.
  14. Ok. My bad. So 3 years at $65 mil.
  15. I don't care about those comparisons. I say give him 3 years at $45 mil
  16. Let Darvish go to the Cubs or even the Yanks. I'd rather have Arrieta or (mostly) Archer (though we would have to trade for him).
  17. I got to know Thome when he played in Kinston (Carolina League). He was mainly a third baseman at the time but played a bit of first and DH. He was a class act then and throughout his career. I am glad he was able to play for the Twins near the end. I don't see how the scouts did not feel he could hit.
  18. A very good deal. I still think Hughes can help and they need to get something out of him with that big salary. I don't like the Duke signing but we will see. Maybe Duffy can do well in long relief like he did this year. I don't see them keeping both Granite and Adrianza on the ML roster as both are weak on power numbers. One more starter should do it.
  19. You have got to be kidding! I liked Duke when he first came up but he has never been successful yet has lasted a long time- probably because he is a lefty. The only thing this signing does is cost the team a roster spot for a young prospect. Why can't Rogers do what Duke is proposed to do? And now I read they may be going after Napoli. Yuck! Bring back Park instead. It's the same difference. Maybe these signings would make sense if someone gets hurt but I can't see it helping at all.
  20. To me it doesn't take much to build a very good bullpen. It is harder to manage that bullpen so you know when to use them and you don't burn them out. If a major league pitcher cannot consistently throw 1 inning without giving up a run, he doesn't belong in the league. The strikeout has caused teams like the Yankees to be thought of as having a "super" bullpen. However, getting people out is most important. Had the Twins been able to bring Kintzler back to complement Rodney, that would have been great. Pressley is the one guy who has been an enigma. He should be very, very good but is not as yet. Hopefully 2018 will be his breakout year.
  21. Like I said in another post, grow your fingernails over the winter because you will be biting them often when Rodney pitches in the ninth. He should, however , save 38 games but will blow 6 saves in 2018 if healthy. Pineda is a good signing but may not pitch until mid-season. The big ballpark should help him. I'm not as big on Darvish as maybe some other starters and hope we don't over pay for a guy who is over rated.
  22. I thought someone like Cichek or even getting Kinsler back would be better but Rodney is a good one. However, he will make several 9th innings very interesting. I hope everyone grows their nails over the winter because you will be biting them next summer. Rodney should notch 38 saves with 6 blown saves if he is healthy all year. I guess Perkins is finally through.
  23. They lost out on Petit who has been very good though not a closer. Reed is a possibility. I cannot find a list of all free agents anywhere- just the "top" ones. Getting Kinzler back could help as well. I don't buy getting Nicasio. Wade Davis might be too expensive. Looks like Grienke might be going to the Rangers.
