Enough Already! Let's Play Ball!
IaBeanCounter replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
2023 Opening game starting lineup Kepler, Correa, Buxton, Larnach, Miranda, Gordon, Gallo, Vazquez, Taylor. In my opinion Taylor had a good year and Kepler was good for half of the year, the rest had disappointing years. Its remarkable that the Twins held it together until reinforcements arrived.- 28 replies

Minnesota Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Catcher
IaBeanCounter replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe that combined Jeffers and Vazquez will be about the same as last year (or better). I agree with all of your other points, especially the comment “we lost Sonny Gray & all is lost”. The Twins record when Sonny pitched was 14-18, 6 times Sonny left with the lead but there was a blown save (Twins came back to win 2 of the 6). The run support for Sonny was awful 3.7 runs per game. In four of his games the Twins scored 35 runs, in the other 28 they scored 84 (3 runs per game with 18 games being 3 runs or less). In my opinion the Twins will have a better BP and will score more runs than last year. As a point of reference San Francisco was 9-9 in DeSclafana's 18 starts last year with only one BS and 4.6 runs support per game, It is very possible DS or whoever is the 5th starter could match the 14-18 record. The postseason is another story, we could trade for an arm at the deadline, but our record in these trades is awful. JMHO GLTA- 40 replies

It is my understanding that the MLB blackout rules exist to protect the RSN. Iowa is blacked out for the Twins, Royals, White Sox, Cubs, Cards and Brewers. Did they change the blackout rules so that Amazon can stream all MLB games? TIA

Will Amazon be streaming some of the Twins games? They put $115 million into Diamond to get it out of bankruptcy.

What i didn't understand is that last year there were times when a relief pitcher (coming in the 5th or 6th inning) would have an a easy 5-9 pitch inning and then be replaced the next inning. Unless there were a lot of rockets being caught, why weren't they sent out to start the next inning? What is the difference between a two inning appearance with 20-25 pitches and a one inning appearance with 20-25 pitches. Duran pitched into a second inning in 8 of his 59 games. I expect most of the relievers can go more than one inning. I am of the belief that good relievers allow runs in about 25% of their appearances. If the Twins are using 4 or more relievers in a game, in most cases, one or more of them will give up runs.

I believe that this is a good trade for both teams and players. Nick was starting to come around in May, prior to his injury. For Mar/Apr he had an OPS of .356 for May it was .750. He wasn't going to see a lot of playing time with the Twins as Castro is ahead of him. I hope Gordon gets the opportunity to play and hits as well or better than his 2022 season. Looking at Okert 2023 numbers, he allowed earned runs in 25% of his games, 7 (1 er), 6 (2 er) and 3 (3+ er). I think the 25% is pretty normal. Duran allowed runs in 23.7% of his games (14/59), but only twice did he allow 2 or more er. I don't think Okert will be great, but I do think he fills a need, much like Pagan in 2023.

02/07/24 Minnesota Twins designated RHP Jordan Balazovic for assignment. The cost of signing Santana and Jackson. I expect Balazovic to be claimed.- 59 replies

Joe Mauer Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame
IaBeanCounter replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is also my favorite play. I don't believe there is (or was) another catcher the could have retrieved the ball and still get back to the plate. The Twins didn't win, but Joe gave the Twins a chance. Congratulations Joe, you earned this honor. -
Who knows, the Twins and Cardinals could be in the World Series and we would have to face Gray more than once in 2024-26.

I'm surprised they didn't make these moves prior to the 14th so they could protect additional players from the rule 5 draft

I don't disagree, but this article is about putting players at risk of the rule 5 draft, none of the listed players were pitchers. I used the Prato/Gordon choice as most commentators feel Prato is at risk and looking at the position players Gordon seemed to be the most likely to be DFA's to add someone.

Off-Season Twins 40-man Roster moves 23-24

Will Gordon be traded or dfa'd prior to 11/14 to make room for another prospect to avoid losing them in the rule 5 draft? -

Setting the Stage for the 2023-24 Twins Offseason
IaBeanCounter replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins played in 6 games, 5 of which the Twins received 12.5% of the ticket sales (60% to players poll, 15% to MLB and 25% split between the participating teams). On the 6th game the would receive 42.5% as no tickets are allocated to the players pool. At $5 million per game, the Twins take would have have been $5.25 million for all six games. They would receive a percentage of the concessions and merchandise sales. It's to bad the don't have set up like KC for parking.- 54 replies

I hadn't seen where the Twins dfa'd Ortega. He was on 60 day IL. Astros will probably turn him into the next Ryan Pressley Edit: Ortega is on the 60 day IL for the Astros -
If the Twins go to a local market TV station, it seems to me that the blackout rules would no longer apply. Currently Iowa is blacked out for the Twins, Royals, Cardinals, Cubs, White Sox & Brewers. MLB had a test this year with the Padres and AZ being only on MLB. I wonder how much money that generated and how much teams received? I dropped cable this year so I was unable to watch the Balley Sports broadcast. Assuming the Twins got 50% of the fee to sign up I would gladly pay MLB $100 to have 162 games available. The Twins would have to sell 1 million fans to purchase the package with the local rights to make up the $54 million. . FWIW I am old enough to remember when a Sioux Falls station (channel 13?) carried the Twins. My home was about 100 miles from Sioux Falls, but Dad had put up a antennae that could pointed to Sioux Falls, Sioux City or Omaha. If the weather was right the picture was decent, if it wasn't right we got a lot of snow, but I still watched.

How Could a Jhoan Duran Extension Take Shape?
IaBeanCounter replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like the proposed contract as it allows the Twins to lock in Duran for up to 3 years of FA and it gives Duran guaranteed money if he were to blow out his arm. I am getting old, but I remember Liriano having a much more violent delivery which ultimately required surgery. Duran's delivery seems much more controlled and smooth. Hopefully that will put less stress on his arm. -
I just looked up the old fashioned field stats for the 3 SS for gold glove: Correa 6 errors 450 chances (one error every 75 chances), fielding .987 1st Seager 8 errors 424 chances (one error every 53 chances). fielding .981 2nd Volpe 17 errors 560 chances (one error every 33 chances). fielding .970 8th

I wonder if the defensive metrics don't fully value his arm. How many shortstops are the cutoff man for double in the right field corner? Can't remember the game, but saw the highlight of him taking the throw from the right fielder and throwing a pea to get the runner at the plate. Julien or Polanco don't make that throw. The defensive metrics don't take into account the postseason, where Correa had to sprint to get a ball that Polanco didn't field and make an on target throw to get a Toronto runner. These are the plays that we remember for the eye test. Do the defensive metrics take into account his leadership in realizing that Toronto baserunners couldn't hear their coach so they could be picked off ( and were)? Again this is in the postseason, but we remember for the eye test. I am glad the Twins have Correa. Edit: The right field cutoff was 8/26 vs Texas.
