Dustin Morse just tweeted a few minutes ago that the new Mauers have been born! Emily and Maren Mauer, both girls

Congrats to the Mauers!

congratulations to Joe and Maddie!

(haha - Joe thinks hitting over .350 is hard - and now one day he will be parenting teenagers. I shouldn't laugh. *snicker*)

Yeah yeah, he got the double, but he didn't drive in any RUNS! Typical Mauer.

And congrats!

You've apparently never witnessed the birthing process :)

Congrats to them. Had a feeling it might be girls since Joe only has brothers -- just seems to run that way sometimes. (I know Joe has nieces but does he have nephews?)

I still find paternity leave ridiculous for professional athletes.

I'm not sentimental, but I couldn't imagine missing the births of my kids. That being said, I don't know how I'd feel if we were active in the post-season right now.

Why? Because they're well compensated?

It's not something I would want to miss, no matter how rich or poor I might be.

Tying it to income or # of days worked/year cheapens what should really just be a nice few days for any family, imo.

I'd feel exactly the same way, the man deserves his time to be with his wife and new children, playoffs be damned.

I find it ridiculous that its limited to 3 games.

The answer is obvious: baseball players and their wives need to figure out a way to ensure that they get pregnant during Spring Training.

That way neither conception nor birth is likely to interfere with the season. :)

or the Twins could figure out a way to keep Mauer occupied in October, freeing up the following July...

I hope they are doing alright. I heard that they were due August 31. That is pretty early even for twins.

Actually, it's not that early for twins. I think on average twins are born at 35 weeks; some make it longer, some don't. I had a friend who had twins a year ago and she made it 36 weeks. Her babies spent a few extra days in the hospital but were otherwise healthy.

I agree. I was stationed in Germany '04-'06. My wife was back in the states. We had a due date for the birth of my daughter, and I got permissive TDY to go there for 10 days. 3 days is nothing.

We are expecting twins and our doctor said 36-38 weeks is normal. Our due date in Nov 8 and we were told to expect them around Oct 16. So being 34 or 35 weeks isnt terribly early but still I would have my concerns.
