Why don't they make Yoendrys Gómez closer?

I know the bar is set very low for this bullpen to say the least. What if they named Yoendrys Gomez the closer to try to iron out the roles in the bullpen over making it an adventure every time the Twins have a lead going into the 9th.

Gomez has pitched well since joining the Twins and my thought is if there was a closer named the rest of the roles could fall into place. I would think if a pitcher knew his role it would give them a better chance to succeed.

Interestingly.... More teams are not setting one closer this year.... But I'm indifferent at this point of the season for this team.

There are 8 pitchers in the bullpen. Not one of them has a defined role.

I think Shelton has done a pretty good job of using the relievers in the right situations based on matchups. Gives the pitcher the best chance to succeed so, no, I don’t want set roles in the pen.

He's striking out guys for Minnesota at a much higher rate than in his previous major league stints. I'm inclined to guess the Magic Pixie Dust disappears from his wings pretty soon.  Likewise the batting average in the low .200s when the ball is put in play, since he was never able to sustain that before either.

I don't hate having him, and there's nothing wrong with giving him some save situations in this closer-by-committee, but I'd pump the brakes a bit on expectations of a lights-out reliever.

I understand, but I think everyone would rather know their role over what they are doing now.

You have a mole inside the clubhouse, to think this?  Who's to say that this motley collection of arms hasn't bought into the program Shelton and Maki and Hawkins have put together?

You may appeal to "common sense", but common sense also suggests a bunch of competitive men like the idea of everyone being given equal opportunity, considering the lack of impressive resume any of them see in each other.

Do you have Gomez on your fantasy baseball team?

Also, they seem to consider him their primary closer at this point, in that, if he's available and there's a save opportunity, then he's going in. Unless there are specific circumstances (string of lefties for example), that would make Shelton want to go in another direction.

I have added him in several leagues. But that's as much a result of them being super deep leagues as anything else. But he's paying off in tough to accumulate categories in those leagues.
