The term "golden sombrero" derives from the hockey and soccer "hat trick" (which signifies three goals or feats). Because four is bigger than three, a four-strikeout game is equated to a bigger, flashier hat—a sombrero. The modifier "golden" is simply an exaggerated reference to the scale of the player's struggles. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
The expression has distinct roots in baseball culture: [1]
  • The "Sombrero": In the 1970s, hitting a "hat trick" (three strikeouts) became widely known as simply getting a "sombrero" in baseball.
  • The "Golden Sombrero": When a batter struck out a fourth time in the same game, the concept was escalated to a "golden sombrero". The term frequently began appearing in print and sports journalism in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

So far this season, I have liked Shelty's moves out of the bullpen.  This seems like one of those where he seems reluctant to take a guy out.  Shelty can have a tendency to leave a guy in one batter too late and then the decision doesn't make any sense.  Banda will now be coming in with a L, S, R, L.

What he do now?

used  2nd challenge on a pitch   totally in the zone.    with 2 out no-one on base

One change I would like to see with the ABS challenge system is giving an extra challenge for the 9th inning or later rather than just in extra innings, similar to asking for a crew chief review any time after the 8th inning.  If that were to happen, it would after the season.

Yeah, the Twins need that revenue when the Sox visit Target Field here coming up.

I'm sure he'll be out for three games and be back just in time

These batters do realize we’re only up 1…. some terrible AB’s the past 5 innings.

The sports better who bet the over in this game have already cashed out so there's no need for the Buffalo Wild Wings button to be pushed.

Offense in snooze control

This happens a lot in the middle innings, and it usually doesn't end so well

For some reason many fans here bring traffic cones and wave them cheering for PIT I'm asking people nearby  and no one knows why.

It's weird.

They were just talking about that on the radio.

Some comment about a lot of traffic on the bases. But also a misprinted "hoist the colours" t-shirt that said cones instead of colours? And someone in a bullpen caught a homer in one. Or something.

Yeah Kris loves chatting about the weirdest stuff. Glen pretends to care about what he’s saying more than the silence of Danny lol
