Not at all interested in Jarren Duran. 29 years old. One outlier season.

It's not a hill I'm willing to die on, but for the record Joe Ryan and Jarren Duran both finished with 4.5 bWAR this year. If we want more speed and better defense, Duran fits the description.

A few tidbits on Ryan's perspective, from the postgame interview Friday night at: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6667145/2025/09/27/joe-ryan-twins-start-trade-offseason/

“At the end of the day, I see the big picture and the decisions they’ve made, and I think they’re good decisions and the trajectory of the organization is positive,” Ryan said. “I think they’re doing a really good job of working with what we have and making the right decisions on the field right now and putting a little more pressure on teams. The young guys that are stepping up, obviously, there have been a couple of rocky outings here and there, but for the most part, guys like Taj (Bradley) and Mick (Abel), those guys look really good.”

Whereas the Twins never got close to trading Ryan in July — multiple team sources said Boston made an incomplete offer only 15 minutes before the deadline...

“I felt like I was in shock for a couple of weeks after (the deadline), and then it kind of settled in,” Ryan said. “(My future) is so far out of my control. But it seems like the team is making good decisions from the front office and coaching staff down to give ourselves a chance to win a couple more ballgames. … I think the team’s going to be in a really good spot going forward.

“Hopefully we’ll make a couple of other moves and see where that goes, but I’m not too worried about that.”

Ryan has obviously learned the business side of things, but to me, these feel more like the quotes of a player planning/wanting/expecting to be around than a player expecting to be traded. They seem especially noteworthy from a guy perceived to be expecting to leave.

His agent coached him up on those quotes. Pretend you’re happy with the direction of the team while I work in the background getting you out of here

A few teams  are relatively close and could use a Joe Ryan in their starting rotation, especially come playoff time. San Francisco, Detroit, Boston, St. Louis, Chicago come to mind quickly.

A couple of fair questions emerge. Will the Twins have any chance at contending in the next two years? Will a team trade a significant prospect or package of players for Ryan this winter?

To give the thought some consideration, flip the script and consider what prospects or package of players the Twins could use to acquire Tarik Skubal if the Twins were in the same or similar position as the Tigers are now, but in a reversal the Tigers were needy for talent  such as the current Twins squad.

St. Louis is in dire straights and looking at what appears to be a significant multi-year rebuild.  They want to trade Arenado and Sonny Gray.  The Athletic and MLBTR have reported they are willing to eat money to trade them, so would cross them off your list.  But understand your point that the package would have to be significant to get Ryan.

SF, Red Sox, and Cubs are close.  The Cubs have some interesting prospects that would be fun to see in a Twins uniform.  Not sure they would part with Ballesteros, but he should be one Twins need to target.  Johnathon Long (1B) is another prospect that the Twins could ask as part of a package.  I watched him play a few games and he hits the ball hard.  Long hit .305/ 20 HR/ 91 RBI/ 19% k rate/ 13% BB rate in 140g at AAA this year.
