strumdatjag Verified Member Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Actually, NBC Sports ranked all of the available free agents (including a few from Japan). #54 - Carlos Santana #76 - Max Kepler #112 - Kyle Farmer (Dead Last - I guess being a great guy in the clubhouse is not a quality that is valued that much). Former Twins include #103 Jorge Lopez, and #50 Jorge Polanco (just covering those named Jorge). Maybe just maybe we value our players too highly in our own minds!!!

He managed to land a strong contract with Colorado. Amazing. Dave Borton 1

That's probably the key word in this sentence. Man, that seems to be a franchise that everyone wants to like, but they just don't make good baseball decisions the last decade or so.

The Rockies drew 600,000 more fans in 2024 than the Twins and their market is smaller. I don't get what the owner is thinking but Denver still supports the team.

Denver is one of my favorite cities (with cheap direct flights!!) and it's a fantastic stadium. If anything, the owner seemed to try too hard, giving than keeping bad contracts desperately trying to win even when waiving the white flag on the season seemed most prudent. All of those things are pretty endearing which is probably why they tend to be a team even non-Coloradans like, the last part just makes it sad though. Dave Borton 1

They should check out the Bryant deal and how that's going for Colorado. Has been paid $78 million on a $182 million deal. Has played 159 games in 3 seasons. Oh, and he's been mostly terrible when playing. Only 4 more years to go! Yikes. Them and the Angels are the best examples of owners who need to hire baseball people and let them do the baseball things while just providing them the money to do it. They support their clubs very well financially, but they get too involved and force moves that tank their teams. Parfigliano, FargoFanMan and FlyingFinn 2 1

I could be wrong, but while rumors of Arte Moreno being way too involved in baseball decisions is well known, I don't know that I've heard that about the Monfort brothers. To me it seems like a Twins situation from a decade ago. Kind of a country club atmosphere and they keep hiring internal. But unlike those Twins teams, that country club clearly tried to sign and retain top end players. They just haven't been good at it.
tony&rodney Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Doyle is a real centerfielder, fun to watch.

The Monforts aren't exactly the same in that they don't as frequently say "I need Pujols" or "I need Hamilton" and force their front office to get them at any cost, and the country club, internal hiring is definitely accurate. But they also regularly force their front office to hold assets at the deadline or go for it when they should be selling because they want to win. Wanting to win is all well and good, but owners who can't be realistic about their team's talent and force their front office to treat their team like they're better than they are is just as bad as forcing them to overspend on Anthony Rendon. Because it leads to overspending on Kris Bryant. Dick Monfort earlier this year even stated that he hates to lose and it's lead to poor decisions (I forget the exact quote). They have made some progress and actually started investing in analytics recently, though. A decade after everyone else, but at least they're working on it! Still refuse to hire outside people, but baby steps, I guess. And they spend. But they're a good example of bad owners holding teams back. They're a poorly run organization because they're bad owners who don't know they're bad owners. nicksaviking 1
