HOW ARE YOU A MAJOR LEAGUE UMPIRE AND NOT KNOW THIS RULE??

I think what's in question is where was the batter/runner when the ball went out of play.

This is an easy call.  Where was the runner when Wallner went into the stands?  Ball is dead and the runner gets one base from where he last passed.  If he hadn't made it to 2nd, then he gets 2nd.

Was just going to say that.  No justification to award 3rd base.  Should be easy as with a proper fence there would be a play at 2nd.

Feeling we might get the Rocco explosion shortly.

Why was that so difficult??  I told y'all that hours ago.

However, I wonder if the question was if the batter/runner had reached FIRST base which, if he hadn't, would have meant he'd have had to stay there.

That's pretty clearly what they were looking at in the replay center. Timing up his foot hitting first with the ball going out of play.

You could make a case for PH For Larnach and Lewis with Keirsey and Helman.

That would be interesting!

The difficulty is if it's a one base vs two base award.

It comes down to a determination of intent of the fielder.  If momentum carries the fielder out of play, one base. If they could deem he assisted the ball going out of play in any way, two bases.

Obviously to us Wallner had no chance of stopping there but that's what they were looking at.

Yeah, Tampa TV was showing the Command Center and they had the video frozen on Diaz hitting 1st.

I thought we were told to stay away from judging intent.  😉
