That's out of the baseline simply on the fact that he ran into the grass to screen Miranda on the play.  He could have easily gone behind him and been fine with no worries of interference.  3B umpire blew that one.

The rule is the runner sets the baseline.

But he clearly avoided the tag by leaving the natural baseline he selected.

Two ****** defensive plays are the difference. Bummer.

Yep. The runs aren't easy to get tonight. Can't give them away like that.

I think he did vary from his set running lane but not for the purpose of avoiding the tag but for the interference with the fielder. You could call either there I would think.

Fielder gets priority over a runner in the area of the play being made. He got away with it because he didn't change speed. One hesitation and it's an obvious call.

It's an unfortunate miss but hard to call in the moment as the combination of two rules where you think, something wasn't right there. He should have called a delayed interference and figured it out in conference.

Yes. And he went more than 3’ to avoid the tag

The first and most important thing to know about the base path is that there is no such thing as a base path (none exists) until a play is made on a runner. The base path is established when a fielder with the ball attempts to tag a runner. Then, and only then, is there a base path. And the base path is a straight line from the runner's position to the base to which he is advancing or retreating.
