Deal is 1 year $25M with a 2nd vesting year for $25M if he starts 10 games (so pretty much 2 yrs $50M barring injury)

Update: It takes 23 starts for him to get the full $25M on the second year, 10 starts gets him $20M

Yep, could've signed him and still been over $10M under last years payroll. I'm sure Falvey had to work within the constraints Joe Pohlad set. I mean why not just pocket the new TV revenue?

Yeah. It's been a real missed opportunity season. Barring catastrophic seasons...
Gray = 3yrs $75MM ($10MM this year)
Snell = 1yr $31MM ($17MM this year, $15MM deferred to 2027)
Montgomery = 1yr $25MM ($25MM this year)

I was hoping the Twins would find a way to shed more salary and grab a front line starter. It's worth noting Neither Snell nor Montgomery would have signed any earlier than they did, and they won't be ready for opening day.

He's able to opt out after this season if he makes 10 starts, so it's much like the Correa and Snell type deals that are really 1 year deals.

It would have taken way more than the 25M to get him two months ago, and I have no interest in him now after missing all of spring training. Those free agents haven't once worked out well for the Twins; this looks almost exactly like the Lance Lynn situation.

Blaming the front office for not spending money they weren't allowed to spend seems very unfair. Blame ownership.

The management team who really looks bad here is Boston. Montgomery was reportedly interested in pitching for Boston; his wife is in residency at a hospital there. They could have added a good pitcher for a fair price. Instead, they spent their money on the injured Giolito and getting rid of Chris Sale.

And Sale is looking pretty damn good for ATL, that would've been a sweet pickup for us. ATL is only paying $10.5M of his salary

Yup, obligatory reminder that this is not a grocery store.  The player has to want to participate as well.  Had she been in residency at Mayo or something and Minnesota was the natural fit I'd feel more like they should be interested but as far as I know he was never into us.

Isn't it more likely that the Twins never even tried to sign him? Pohlad flat out said they weren't signing any of Boras' guys. Don't think this is a situation that has anything at all to do with Montgomery being into us or not.

I'm tired of the payroll discussion. Could the Twins have signed more/better pitchers than they did? Probably.

That said, I'll note that none of the 3 names listed above is available for Opening Day. There is risk with every signing and only time will tell.
