Yeah, I mean, he was a good LB before he came here so maybe it was coaching/scheme? And Flores knows what he's doing? But I thought he was a bit invisible last year. I had no idea he had a 129 tackles. I would have guessed a lot fewer.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/03/13/vikings-restructure-jordan-hicks-contract/

My issue was two fold, and it could have been coaching....

He made most of his tackles after big gains.

It SEEMED like he always got pushed backwards (that said, I didn't watch every play).

For 2.5-3 MM per year? Not going to find cheaper veteran, I'd think.

Seven million a year on a cap strapped team, needing at least four new defensive players and a center..... terrible use of the cap. Just put a cheap guard out there.

A blocking TE no less. I mean, do you even pay Jim Kleinsasser in his prime that kind of money? How good could this guy actually be at blocking?

OK, I still hate this from a waste-of-money perspective, but I guess if the idea is that securing the edges and stabilizing the OL is priority number one for the offense this year, the signing might be dumb, but maybe is a good sign that they plan on giving the QB better time in the pocket next year. Need to still fix the interior of the line though.

Defense should be the main priority, but I don't want to see them chasing an ODB kind of WR or spending dumb money on a RB either. Better protection should be the only offense they try to address in free agency. Maybe they can sign one of the million available RBs on the cheap, but that can come much later after they've been picked through.

At that rate he better take out two guys a play.

Head scratching first day of free agency move when there is extremely limited cap space.

There are several things to like about Oliver… Young (25), 2nd best graded run blocker per PFF, and athletic. The head scratching part is this… Are the Vikings changing their offense to use more 2 TE sets? Last year they were the 7th lowest utilizing 2 TE sets. Or are we flipping Hockenson for picks?

I don't get the Oliver move... the dude has been healthy for one full season and is not a receiving threat, and yet gets $7M a year and $10M guaranteed. That’s a bigger contract than LB TJ Edwards (3/19.5), C Ethan Pocic (3/18), and C Bradley Bozeman (3/18)!!

They have so many needs to fill and blow too much on a blocking TE who has one nice year under his belt? Yikes. Maybe I’m missing something here. I guess they're ready to go 2 TE heavy sets, and our run blocking was quite bad last year so Oliver should help there. I just don't get why he commanded $7M a year when I would have guessed he'd get 1/$3M. They've got so many other holes to fix, and instead make a luxury signing.

I’m getting some serious John Carlson deja vu…

That’s a name I haven’t read in a long time… I erased that horrible experiment from my memory and now it’s back.

For sure head scratching but maybe also intriguing. If the house cleaning is in effect, I'm in favor of flipping Hockenson. But of course, this new guy doesn't catch passes and some TE must.

Could be more 2 TE sets, but maybe in name only, if Hockenson is actually the #2 receiver.

Third thought is: Cousins has been here for five years, so we are keenly aware that he rarely can get through three targets in his progressions. It's first look, second look, then check down for him. If Hockenson is going to be the primary second look, might as well run lots of heavy 2 TE sets because if you're running 3 or 4 WR sets, the bottom wideouts tend to be decoys at best. Maybe they plan leaning into one of Cousins' weakness and are saying 'screw it, we're not fooling anyone, we'll just add more blocking'.

The fact that we’re still 5-6 million over the cap and signed this dude doesn’t speak well for Kwesi. Start making  decisions dude.

For sure it should make Harrison Smith uncomfortable. I'd even say a Cousins trade isn't out the window either. I mean, they still have to sign a bunch of defensive players, even if they're at league minimum, they don't have the space.

I've had a few, so maybe this is hogwash, but if you trade Cousins and sign a guy like Tyler Huntley to a deal like Mike White got, a guy who scrambles but maybe has below average passing skills, a top end blocking TE makes sense too.

Marcus Davenport for 13M? I mean, they need a DE, but that can't be good value. Seems like you could sign a half dozen UDFAs who could at least have a shot at being as good as this guy.

They're going to have to cut someone who's a much better player than he is just to afford him. I want them to stink and rebuild as opposed to tread water, but these first two signings are really, really suspicious.

He was projected for twelve. This has to mean Zadarius is gone.

A DE with .5 sacks and 29 tackles who was only good enough to start 9 games was projected for 12M?

Man, this team needs to be better at drafting if that's the cost for a rotational DE.

So far, I'm not a fan of this front office, bit I'll give them two more years.

Agreed. I was mostly turned off by last year's draft. They basically did the exact opposite of what I was hoping for. Don't like this year's free agency start, but I'll admit it's a bit early to judge. But myself, I'll probably be calling for heads after one more year, not two. They don't need to be good next year, but they need to have players I can dream on. So far, they haven't acquired a single one.

Well that's encouraging. The Saints did have a good D, so I guess maybe his numbers were due to a lack of opportunities. I really just remember him being a high draft pick and not performing as expected.

Davenport reminds me a lot of Jadaveon Clowney, high pressure rate but doesn't close out well, gets plagued by injuries. He's just as likely to have a 10 sack season as he is a 1 sack season. I like going with the younger guy, but man $13M is a lot, especially when you're bending over backwards to pay a blocking TE. Probably means Smith is gone, and we're back to being around $16-18M over the cap so tomorrow is going to be a busy day. Still a ton of holes to be filled.

DT Tomlinson got $14.25M a year from the Browns, CB Peterson got $7M per year from the Steelers, and Kendricks inked a deal with the Chargers.

Re-doing Kirk's deal, but supposedly only to move money to future years' cap, not extend him. Makes sense, they are way under the cap after this year (I mean, it makes sense if you are keeping him, which they clearly are).

edit" moves 16 MM to future years.

2 silver linings: We are 100% moving on from Kirk after the 2023 season, even potentially this offseason. Lowering his cap hit to $20 million opens up the possibility for a trade even more.

Downside: That’s going to be a nasty, costly dead cap hit in 2024.
