That is some bold player evaluation by the Red Sox. I have to guess they shopped him around and found no trade value. I'd still expect whoever is among the first in line for the waiver wire will grab him just on general principles?  He's still only 24 which suggests a chance for further growth and last I looked his profile was a major leaguer, albeit not a star or maybe even not quite average. They must have soured on both his glove and his bat simultaneously.

Could have had Brusdar instead.

Just another example of how thin the margins are in player evaluation.

Talented people often get it wrong because of how thin it is. It doesnt just happen to the Twins. These type of mistakes are made every year by every team.

Some are noisy like this one and some fade away in the distance quietly.

Trading prospects for superstars can be a huge sucker bet for the prospect side. EVERYBODY has a good idea about the superstar's capabilities, but the original team is the only one who has deep insight into the prospects.

I was going to say that you can probably avoid whiffing on many of your offensive prospects by steering clear of the guys with high K% (apologies Matt Wallner!), but looks like Down's K% went from 20% with the Dodgers to 32% with Boston. Even comparing A to AAA numbers, that doesn't seem normal.

But also not seeming normal is skipping AA. Kind of weird Boston did that.
