Deduno

Anyone have an update on Deduno?

Checking for stats... I see he has none.

Anyone know what the injury is? How long will he be out?

I wonder where Deduno currently sits on the totem pole. The timing of his injury was very unfortunate because he was primed to hop right into the Twins' rotation at the start of the season. Once he's ready (which shouldn't be too long now), will they give him a shot right away or send him to Rochester until an opportunity opens or he forces the issue?

I could see Sam Deduno replacing whoever falters in the current rotation. He's a competitive, entertaining pitcher, and he lasts a typical Twins 5 or 6 innings. This team is stocked with fairly good mid-rotation pitchers, and Deduno is as good as any of them.

I believe Deduno is not on the 40-man at the moment. Probably that factors into a decision to bring him up. Even if someone goes on the 60-day DL, adding Deduno means someone will have to be dropped when that injured player comes back, and while no future Hall of Famers are at risk of being lost on waiver claims, you still don't make that move lightly. Hendriks or Gibson seem more likely starter candidates to get an early call if needed; Wood (currently injured) or Robertson among relievers.

And... If placed on the active roster... If they need to send him down... He would be exposed to waivers... It's almost like you can't use him because you could lose him. I imagine they have to be damn sure he's ready.

I think Hernandez just had a cramp and was fine the next day. They waited until the next day to announce the Hendriks demotion, just in case Hernandez needed to go on the DL. And he didn't.

Towards the end of spring training and after the Dominican win in the WBC, Ryan said on the air that Deduno was "on track to be in the rotation" before the injury. He'll need some rehab starts, but I don't think his status has changed since then.

I would think when he's ready, he'll replace Hernandez, but I don't know how they'll make room on the 40-man for him.

The Twins have a lot of injured pitchers to make room for:

Wood pitched his first rehab game in Fort Myers and is scheduled to pitch another before going to Rochester to complete his rehab.

Devries is playing long toss and should go out on a rehab soon

Harden is pitching in extended spring

Ditto for Perez

And then there are Gibson and Deduno. It's a good problem to have. But I don't know how they'll make room for all these guys.

Hasn't Slama been "forcing the issue" for about 140 years now? Deduno would need to be awfully impressive to change the Twins' plans. Like it or not, I'd say the guys above Deduno on the totem pole are there to stay.

No real rush with DeDuno, wait until he is 100% and forces the issue, his upside in all reality is that of a #5 guy (though a fun to watch #5 guy at that)

Deduno, Gibson, Hendriks, DeVries and Hernandez all have legit claims to a rotation spot. Meanwhile Pelfery and Worley are blocking them while producing what one would expect from a AA pitcher.

Hmmm...Deduno and DeVries have been on the DL. Hendriks started the season with the club and Hernandez had a 4.99 ERA with a 1.548 WHIP at AAA so he hasn't exactly been beating the door down. As far as I can tell nobody has been blocked so far.

Meanwhile Pelfrey and Worley have pitched all of 3 games. Let's see where they are at after 7 or 8 starts. Both have a track record suggesting they can pitch in MLB.

I'd love if they could get Pelphrey pitching well and deal him in July.

Diamond

Worley

Correia

Gibson

Deduno

Not half bad.

Well, maybe half bad and a little more, but better....

No way, if Pelfrey starts pitching well I think you take the opp to sign him to a 2 year deal or so. This team can't afford to be trading "legit starting pitchers" anytime soon.

Has Correia really been that convincing? Gotta love what he's done so far, but I'm not sure if we can forget that his career stats don't suggest that will be sustained. Also, Diamond didn't exactly shine in his season debut. Last year was great, but I'm not on board with the Tom Glavine comparisons that have been thrown out there.

Side note - what happens if Nick Blackburn remembers how to pitch? Trade chip or Twins rotation?

More like Tom Glavine could only hope to be Correia.

I agree, but it's anyone's guess when he'll get his control back. His arm strength is almost all the way back--maybe a couple of mph off his peak. But he is missing his spots by three inches or more consistently. He might not get the good control back this year. He still might be good enough to get something in return in a trade. Either way, I don't see him in the rotation in the second half.

Pelfrey is a below average pitcher. His ERA+ is 91. He is the kind of pitcher you can find on the FA market any year. That isn't the kind of pitcher you sign to multi-year deal, unless you're Kevin Correia and your "stuff is better than the stats say" of course. If you can get ANYTHING back for Pelfrey you ship him out (making the safe assumption of course that we are out of contention at that point).
