Twins Radio Network 96.3?

I thought the Twins games were supposed to be aired on 96.3 FM. The first 2 games have not been broadcasted, but I found them on AM radio. What really confuses me is that the Pohlad's own 96.3.

I couldn't get the online stream to work, but the radio in my car tuned to 96.3 FM was definitely a Twins game.

They are definitely on 96.3, but they block it online because they want you to buy MLB Gameday Audio. You can usually find a free online broadcast from an affiliate, though, if you are intrepid enough (Google free baseball radio).

Also, the 96.3 signal may not be the greatest, particularly in the east metro I hear. You may be hearing a different station around that same frequency, and maybe you are hearing one of the affiliates on AM. Look up the Twins affiliate list to see what is close to you.

What's that again?

You can't stream baseball games from computers or tuners on your phone. You have to tune into the actual radio station on a radio. Am I wrong? Am I missing something? Ive never had any luck doing it.

You can do it on your phone if you have an actual FM tuner -- that's what I've been doing lately on my new Android phone. You can't do it through "internet radio" on your phone or computer unless you pay for Gameday Audio or find an affiliate who's not blocking the game. Look here, and if you don't find a working Twins station, you may find one working for the Twins opponent (it's actually kind of interesting to listen to the other team's broadcast anyway):

I've got a buddy who lives in St. Paul, not more than 2 mi. from the Mississippi River on St. Clair, and he can't tune 96.3 in from inside his house. Car can pick it up in the garage and driving in the neighborhood, but ixnay in the ousehay. I live on the opposite side of the river from him, probably not quite 3 miles as a crow flies, and I have no problem tuning it in in my house.

Weird.

Car Radios typically have far better antenna and tuners, simply because they have to be able to continually gather the signal while moving at rapid speeds. He probably has a crappy radio in his house. Also, FM radio tends to be much more affected by physical obstacles, so if he has older metal siding, stucco (which contains a metal mesh), concrete walls (which usually are full of rebar), or just really really thick walls, it can mess up the signal.

BTW, it is 2013......you'd think by now someone would realize that getting a game on my phone is no different than on my radio....oh wait, it is different. They know who I am and can literally understand what I listen to and not, and adjust ads appropriately, and yet they still think they should charge me. Bizarro world.

MLB has their broadcasting rights twisted into such knots that I don't know if they'll ever get it sorted properly. Right now, it's sheer lunacy.

I pay for MLB.tv but have no use for cable... So every time I watch a Twins game, I have to spend five minutes fiddling with proxy settings to make the system think I'm out of zone.

Brock, get a cousin from out of state to subscribe, and use their login.....that's the best way from what I hear. I don't do that, but I know many others that do.

Imagine living in Iowa, and not being able to watch MN, CHI, MILW, or STL. Or other places like out west where people that live hundreds of miles from Seattle can't watch them.

MLB.tv uses your IP address to obtain your location. It doesn't matter if you subscribe in Bengali or Iowa... If you're in Minneapolis when you log in, MLB will black out the game.

It's not a huge hassle to use a proxy to log in but it is a pain in the ass. A pain in the ass that shouldn't be necessary because there is no way in hell I'm going to subscribe to cable television. It's 2013. I'm not going to be tethered to a television set to watch a friggin' baseball game.

It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out in coming years. Hockey, basketball, and baseball could lose an entire generation of fans because they're dogmatically sticking to outdated methods of delivery; methods of delivery that are not popular with children who grew up using the Internet. Football doesn't matter as much because all the games are broadcast on network television as opposed to cable.

Posted

Ah, so it's even worse. If you live out of town, and are travelling, you can't watch if you are here?

This is all an attempt by the tv and radio networks to maintain control, imo. And, for football, it will matter. Eventually they'll move more to cable delivery. What amazes me is that we fund the stadiums, and don't demand a percent of games on free tv to compensate taxpayers.

With image transmission changing (tv) it will be interesting to see how the contracts change. When the cable companies can no longer make subscribers pay for stations they do not want, will these teams make as much money on their broadcast rights. As Brock pointed out the younger generation is changing how they watch entertainment. The free broadcasts for baseball that Mike wants appear to be long gone. Football would be a whole different conversation and worthy of it's own separate blog.

I don't even care about free. All I want is the ability to pay somebody to watch baseball games without having to use proxies to skirt the rules.

And I'm sure as hell not gonna buy a cable package I don't want and won't use for anything other than sporting events.

Brock,

How is MLB.tv I am seriously considering buying it for this season. And what do you suggest for proxy settings? How is Mlb tv for tablet settings?

Oooooh, how!?

Apparently I'm a technological retard.

I've got the same situation as your buddy. I live in a Northeastern suburb and I can get the station when I'm driving, but not in my house. It seems like there might be too much interference from another close-by station. I was so disappointed when I went to tune in to a spring training game and discovered my radio couldn't do it!

Another possible issue just occurred to me. Unlike most of the major FM radio stations in this market, KTWN still broadcasts only in analog. If you have a radio/antenna that's designed to pick up digital signals (like an Hd radio or something) it may actually not be good for picking up KTWN

I tried to listen to the game on the radio. I had to quit when I found there was no 30 second skip button.

I listen to most games on MLB Audio. Yeah, it's kinda stupid that I'm paying for something that's theoretically "free," but I am often not near an FM radio, the signal does suck (although it's not as bad as AM 1500 was), and I like to cruise around and listen to other games too, of which there is always at least one going on somewhere - and I do that a lot more than you'd maybe think, and it's made me a more knowledgeable baseball fan. That alone is worth it to me.

I think $20 a year is a very reasonable price to pay for all that. Every game, every day, all year, perfect sound, anywhere I can get online, twenty bucks? Dude, that's a steal.
