Chris Archer: Update

I don't know how much you can blame coaching for a veteran player's struggles.

For a pitcher, you could blame the catcher, perhaps, at least partly. You can certainly put blame on the defense.

At this point in his career, Archer should have some idea of how to do his job, so I don't see coaching as being a factor.

Regardless of the budget, I wouldn't be surprised of Chris Archer was off of the Twins radar all together. I have no clue how they feel about TOS surgery, but based on the responses in this thread, it's going to be a nonstarter for many people.

This is old news but Archer signed with the Rays for $6.5M plus incentives. 1st I thought this offer is really high. Then I thought it was the Rays that had offered it to him, the same stingy team that let Morton go because they didn't want to pay him the $15M that was owed him. The Rays have kept tabs with Archer and they have a great eye for pitching, that's what keeps them a competitive team year after year.
For them to throw this kind of money at Archer means that they are confident that he'll come back fully from his surgery and return to his earlier form. W/o trying to develop him, they'll recycle him and try to resell him. Which will be a shame because Archer deserves better than that.

Chris Archer has an elite 4 seamer & slider plus an above average change up. Like I said before J Santana can perfect his circle change up. He gets a lot of SOs so what's his problem? It has been said that he tip off his pitches. How is he doing that?

I read a great article about "mirroring", it's throwing your pitches as close as possible to the same arm angle. Example, spin  a pitch one way you get a rising fast ball the other way you get a slider, little to no spin a change up. There by the hitters can't guess what's coming. Much of Bieber & Hill's success is striving to perfect this technic.

I'm not an expert but it seems that Archer could be throwing his pitches at different arm angles therefore a hitter that focuses on arm angles & Archer's pitches can be able to determine what he's throwing & unload on the pitch. If Archer can work on mirroring, have Wes up tick his FB & pitch selection & improve on his change up, he'd be awsome.

"HAD" not has until he can prove otherwise.

You know the offseason has been bleak when you revisit a month-old Chris Archer thread, hoping the Twins made some kind of move.

That's a reality of being a Twins fan unfortunately. It will take this team another 30 years to win their next world series with the way the FO and ownership are currently puttering along. That is if they get lucky. Been watching this team since the mid 80's and i see no signs they are willing to go to the next level. NONE.

I thought with the Donaldson signing last year they showed at least a little fire...

You still think this after all the moves they made in the past couple of weeks?

Yep. I've never been impressed with dumpster diving moves or looking for great deals in tent cities.

I would not classify all of the moves as "dumpster diving."

Didn't they spend something like $35M-$40M in the past month? That's one hell of a dumpster.

Correct. They haven't been "dumpster diving," especially if we acknowledge that previous off-seasons also exist.

Trading a highly valuable asset for the Cy Young runner up is a dumpster diving move? I mean, I have mixed feelings about LA as a place to live and work, but I wouldn’t call it a tent city. And that Dodger organization that won the World Series last year and is gearing up for another run isn’t a dumpster.

TOS. What Archer was is history. Although the doctors learn more about it, success for a pitcher to their prior levels is rare. Many have decent half seasons. If Archer gives them a great first half that may be all they are hoping for. That is not what the Twins need

I like the way that this FO has dove into the analytics and hired coaches to help w/ players development. They way they find players that they can tweak that they help the team. That's how a small market team can survive. I only fault them on not able to make bold and smart transactions which does cost the team too much but able to take the team to the next level.
