Royce Lewis has always been touted for his baseball talent, his charisma and his smile. In the Pioneer Press, Betsy Helfand wrote about his maturity. 

 

 

“I think Royce’s energy and presence and charisma are some of the things that just hit you smack in the face when you first meet him,” Twins farm director Jeremy Zoll said. “To see those qualities in someone his age is really special.”

I like Lewis and believe in him.  As far as being touted for "his smile" all I can say is.....when did that become the ingredient for success??

 

Ben Revere smiled a whole lot and in one case he flashed a great big smile in the outfield after he committed a ridiculous error that cost the team runs.  That rubbed me the wrong way and I liked Revere's heart coming back from a vicious beaning and being an undersized guy., etc...

After awhile he started to annoy me.  It's nice to smile, but be a pro at the same time.  To me, as long as a player doesn't constantly sulk I could care less about a smile.  Totally unimportant and in some cases inappropriate, in my opinion.

Absolutely, I do.  I expect Lews to be a whole lot better than Revere, but so much was made about Ben and his smile.  Who cares?  Honestly

Journalists and others making note of things like a smile are probably alluding to either of two things: a potential strong contributor toward good clubhouse chemistry, or the makings of a fan-favorite. (Or both, of course.) When it's someone like Revere, who lacked a couple of tools, it's just for fun. When it's about a five-tool player, then side notes like this pertain to whether he might become a big star, a national celebrity even, on top of whatever talents come to fruition when he reaches the majors.

 

Part of Kirby Puckett's story is his effect on fans. I read a similar anticipation here. It's not a big deal - and then again, now and then and here and there, maybe it is.

I guess a good test would be to go to Ft Myers this month, and tell him in person that you've read he has a great smile. If he stops smiling, you may be onto something.

I might be in Ft. Myers next month, but I have no interest in seeking him out on the matter since he has nothing to do with it.  It is more about those who spin the yarn.

The posts here have taken a weird and unsettling turn. Dude, it's Spring Training and they're writing puff-pieces to fill column inches and space on the sports pages. This is known as a "human interest feature" and you just take it at face value.

 

Royce Lewis is a great prospect and seems to be a cool, nice guy. That's pretty much all we are supposed to read into this article. Good for him and go Twins, 'nuff said.
