And SwainZag does jump in from time to time.

Speaking of SwainZag, I found this post disappointing just now:

http://twinsdaily.com/topic/34155-article-twins-trade-lewin-diaz-for-rhp-sergio-romo-2-minor-leaguers/?p=887929

Eye roll. They added a bullpen arm and an intriguing SP prospect and dealt from a position of strength and depth. Maybe you should give us a clue about what baseball is about.

If you are looking for a new moderator who will hit offending posters with snark right there in the thread, then maybe he's the guy. Once in a great while, that's called for. I tend to regret doing it more often than I feel proud, though. Anyway, a data point since we're discussing him - I don't consider it a disqualifier per se.

I also like Hosken Bombo and nine of twelve.

Another name for consideration: amjgt. My recollection is that he usually makes sense when he posts. I haven't gone back and checked, though.

You are correct. I liked what he did in that game thread Maybe he would be good for the positivity team?

He has less than 500 posts. While I don't think post total should necessarily be a deterrent ... I'm not sure.

I don't think Hosken would make a good moderator. Nine of twelve is smart, but can also be nitpicky, but has he been around for very long?

Three?

In no particular order:

bighat

Sconnie

SwainZag

Honorable mentions:

Jorgenswest

Han Joelo (I'm less and less convinced of this one even though I thought he'd be great once upon a time.)

Since Brock amended the criteria to game thread participants ...

bighat remains on my list. Swain drops in often enough, so I guess I'll still leave him on. But ... does Sconnie participate at all? He liked my thread starter post today, so he at least reads, but if we want participants, I'd have to see how participatory sconnie is in those threads.

But, as for participants of threads ... I like PDX Twin ... but I'd have to check him out a bit more. Does he participate anywhere else on the site?

And another I had on a longer list ... GCTF ... not sure if he'd make a good moderator, but he participates on game threads. Stu ... do you know him? What do you think of him?

Care to elaborate on Hosken? I think he stands out personally. He's also able to handle some of our more troublesome posters with some tact in my opinion.

I might know him funny enough, we've never bothered to find out. He's a pretty infrequent poster from my observation but has been around for a long time. I believe he was a BYTO member, no?

I'll do an exploratory mission. It's Winnipeg, there's a good chance he's my neighbour.

I feel I should express again, if we pick the right poster(s) they very well may transition into what we hope they will, despite what they are now.

I have no clue what kinds of crazy discussions you had prior to offering me the gig, but I absolutely would have been considered one of the negative Nancy’s. I think there are likely posters out there, who perhaps have question marks, who would be more than happy to change tone if they understand the fate of their favorite message board relies on them becoming more impartial.

I think we couldn't agree with anyone, so we settled for you. ;)

Some of the conversations I've had with him, I just wonder about his ability to try and be objective. But he's not someone I would absolutely veto if all felt he would be good. I just have my reservations.

Well, he has close to 3000 posts which is more than a number of names being tossed about. But yeah ... over the course of membership? Dunno. And maybe I see his posts mostly in game threads.

Okay, I've done some more thinking and more research, and have altered my 3 names. I like Sconnie and think he'd be good, but I don't see him as a strong participant in game threads, something Brock said we should be looking at. So ... here are my three suggestions (again, in no particular order) with two honorable mentions:

Bighat

SwainZag

Hosken Bombo Disco

Honorable mentions:

amjgt

howeda7

PDX Twin

Nine of twelve

Bighat and Swain were on my original list of 3 and they remain. I opted out Sconnie for Hosken. I know just a few posts ago I said I didn't think Hosken would be good, but after reading output in this forum, where he gets mentioned, it was always good ... and many posts by me. I think I was thinking of his response to the Dozier trade.

The honorable mentions are just that. They participate in game threads, they've been mentioned here already, I see no reason not to consider them and would, but I like the three names I posted as better options.

And I dropped GCTF. I like when he posts, but I think TN is right ... it's somewhat sporadic. But I think he has good snark, in the appropriate places, to the appropriate people à la snepp. But we need actual, consistent participants who will actually contribute to the moderation team.

If game thread output becomes a stronger consideration.

nine of twelve becomes a stronger consideration.

I think Sconnie could become a more active participant in game threads. Just because he hasn't been doesn't mean he couldn't be.

I've been sold on Swainzag from the get go.

Regardless of the game thread activity criteria. I still think it's a good idea to make one of the three choices someone who is Minor League Forum inclined. Someone who really likes following whoever prospect #24 is.

Brock asked for a list of 3 from each of us ... is this your list of three?

I'm not able to suggest a Minor League Forum representative because I don't spend enough time there to be comfortable with a personal choice.

But I will vote off one of my three (not sure who) for a suitable minor league forum representative at the consensus of others better informed to make such a selection.

I still like Blake in terms of both frequency and personality, but you guys are all much better at this stuff than I. I still struggle to put names to past infractions and incidents in the electronic world. Where Blake is concerned, his recent game thread contributions are what stand out most to me. However, I’d really prefer to defer to you guys.

Though maybe I shouldn’t, knowing the misstep you made in your last mod selection.

If we find 3 guys just like you... we win.

OK, if we're all going to do it.

Swainzag,

Blake

Sconnie

But again, I hope nobody puts much weight on my suggestions, I really struggle to recall the long term content the posters provide when I don't have a more personal connection with them.

Okay, some of these names have reminded me that I don't pay enough attention to user screen names so I'm going to recuse myself from voting and will act in a vetting role only. Okay, so the three leaders appear to be:

Swainzag: I have vetted his recent posts and full support this choice.

Sconnie: I've actually met him and he has posted here long enough that I don't really need to vet him (but will anyway, in case I've missed anything recently).

Hosken Bombo Disco: I view him as a pretty good poster but can't say for certain without vetting his posts. I doubt there will be any significant issues but I'll do it anyway.

So how many moderators do we want, anyway? I was originally thinking two but that was just a number I pulled out of my ass, to be frank about it. If you all think three is a better number, we can do that (and that's assuming they all accept, which they may not).

One minor concern I have about Swainzag and Sconnie is their post count. They're long term members of TD but neither has crossed 5,000 posts. Is this a concern or am I overthinking it? It's possible being a mod makes them more likely to post often but I can't say for sure.

I don't know ... it's hard to say. It could mean that their time is limited. Or, it could mean they've said what they want and don't need to add further to the back and forth. Or it could mean they aren't as present as we think they are. The only way to know that is to ask them. I certainly didn't have a high post count when I was approached, but I was all over the forums and read pretty much all I could. But then, I posted in the game threads and that's where I was plucked from. While I might have pretty decided opinions here and there, someone has always stated it better or enough, that I didn't really have much to add. My post count is as high as it is because of this forum.

The other thing to consider, what you said to consider, was their participation in game threads. Does Sconnie participate there much? He was on my original list but I replaced him because of that. But if that's not as big of a concern, then I have no issues. I like him, he's a good poster.

As for numbers ... I say ask all three. If only one accepts, we find a second. If two accept, we're done. If three accept, no problem, we'll take the extra help.

Agreed, likely all three don’t accept but it would be fine if they do. Let’s do it.

Concur. I didn't get around to forming a list of 3 of my own, but that's because I can vote for any of several good candidates. There will be a learning curve for whoever we pick, and we'll help them along.
