Happy Mother's Day and welcome to another Twins Daily Game Thread experience!  I apologize for posting this early but it's fishing opener weekend in Minnesota and I need to head back out onto the lake.  My fishing buddies are pacing the dock and giving me the ugly eye while I type up this Game Thread introduction.  I've tried explaining to them I'm doing a favor for Chief and Carole by volunteering today but it doesn't seem to help.  They've mumbled under their breath a few times now, "who the hell is Chief and Carole"?...

Anyway, sorry to get off topic.  What a great day it was yesterday!  It was fishing opener, I fished all day with my son who is back from college at Virginia Tech, caught the biggest Crappie of my life (true) and the Twins beat the Angels in extra innings.

Today is going to be even better for a variety of reasons: #1. I get to go fishing again.  #2. Twins are going to beat the Angels. #3. It's Mother's Day!

Speaking of Mother's Day, the first celebration of it started way back in 1908 by Anna Jarvis who held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia.  Anna started to campaign back in 1905 the year her mother died to make Mother's Day a nationally recognized holiday. She wanted a day set aside to honor all mothers because she believed  a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world".

In 1908, the U.S. Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother's Day an official holiday, joking they would also have to proclaim a "Mother-in-laws day".  However, due to Anna's efforts by 1911 all U.S. states observed the holiday.  By 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed a proclomation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.

Although Anna was successful in founding Mother's Day, she became resentful of the commercialization of the holiday. By the early 1920's companies like Hallmark Cards and others began selling Mother's day cards.  Anna believed these companies misinterpreted and exploited the idea of Mother's Day and the emphasis of the holiday was on sentiment, not profit.  She was so upset by this that she actually organized boycotts of Mother's Day and threatened to sue the companies involved.  Anna argued that people should show their appreciation for their mothers through hand written letters expressing their gratitude and love, instead of buying gifts and pre-made cards.

Whew...I feel like I should take back the Mother's Day cards I bought my mom and wife.  I now feel guilty about the 1-800 flowers order I placed for my mom this week too.  I guess I should go hand write a nice letter to my mom and send that instead.  My mom won't be able to read my awful handwriting but maybe its the thought that counts. I wonder if Anna would be ok if I sent my mom an email?

I gotta go fishing now and get back home in time to celebrate Mother's Day with my wife and kids. Don't forget to call your mom today and make sure to honor her in the same manner Anna intended the holiday.  I wonder if bringing home fresh fish for dinner fits into that category?  Gotta think about that one.

Happy Mother's Day Mom and to all the other mothers out there in Twins Territory!

Go Twins!

P.S. I will try to post the lineups once they are released.

Lineups:

Twins: TBD

Angels: TBD

Weather: Partly cloudy, 68 degrees, 0% chance of rain

Nobody apologizes for bringing in the donuts early.

So... No need to apologize for posting this early.

Everyone will be along shortly.  :)

Anyone else missing Mr. Castro yet?

Garver has really opened my eyes as to how much difference it makes to have a competent catcher behind the plate.

I want a pitchers duel today.

I want to watch both pitchers and be amazed by both.

I want a 0-0 game until Ohtani reaches his pitch count limit and then

I want the Twins to torch the Angels bullpen like a pressure cap has been removed.

I want this because... I know it is what my wife would want for Mother's Day.

Garver has some things to work on behind the plate. He's made a couple of bonehead plays and there have been some unfortunate passed balls.

However... He has contributed at the plate and it's not like the pitchers he catchers are getting lit up because he can't call a game or he struggles to work with them.

The Twins will be alright letting Garver catch. This is the moment that he has been waiting for. He's a No. 1 Catcher now. This is his opportunity to prove he belongs up here.

I think he will do it.

Actually that's not true. I once flubbed my Friday morning assignment to bring doughnuts in for the staff. Since I was commuting 38 miles to work and our local baker told me I had to be at the bakery no later than 5 am as he had to cover the morning delivery route that day, I had two trays of Dan's finest artery-clogging doughnuts and rolls sitting in the staff lounge by 6:00 am. The early birds got all the best worms and those staff members who arrived at the regular time had to settle for only one artery-choker apiece from a meager selection. They were not happy. A fact they didn't mind sharing with me. I burped self-consciously in the face of their displeasure (I ate 4 artery-cloggers myself that morning - you know, because I had to skip breakfast in order to pick up the rolls at 5 am) and promised to never bring doughnuts in early again.

So the next time my delivery assignment conflicted with Dan's delivery assignment, I kept the two trays of goodies locked in my office until 7:30. Which gave me ample opportunity to select the finest 4 for my breakfast.

There's a moral in their someplace... Perhaps I'll figure it out some morning over coffee and rolls.

I remember a Saturday Morning when I was living in Grand Rapids.

I had nothing going on that day. For some reason I woke up and felt like Krispy Kreme.

There is one Krispy Kreme in Grand Rapids and I lived about 10 miles from it. There is a Tim Horton's just down the road but I drove past that and a bunch of other places that made donuts to go to Krispy Kreme.

I picked up a dozen.

With no help from anyone else... I polished off all of them before the day was through.

I told some people at work on Monday what I did and a couple of them had conversations with me about how to live longer.

No... pretty sure she wants a vacuum cleaner.        I think that is what wives like for gifts.

Do NOT compare Krispy Kreme donuts to my photo ... they aren't even close. That's a picture from my home town bakery. Krispy Kreme came to town, opened a store, and closed it within a couple of months because ... they don't compare to the best that was already there. :)

I think you should give your wife that and see what she thinks of it.

I'm not sure what the problem is. I think my wife likes this new vacuum just fine....

Well, for me, it opened my eyes as to why Castro is the number 1 catcher. I have my doubts as to whether or not Garver's bat will make up for his shortcomings behind the plate.

It is what it is and the Twins are winning, which is always a good thing.

I had a banana, Irish oatmeal and black coffee along with copious amounts of bottled water.  DId a four mile walk, too.

I missed on the donuts, but when I get to mom's I won't be missing out on the pastries after a late lunch!

I haven’t eaten yet but looking at granola, raspberries and yogurt. I no longer live anywhere close to those donuts in the picture ... which is both a fortunate and unfortunate thing. But when I visit ... no other glazed raised compares. And the maple frosted long johns are a thing of beauty. It’s probablh more fortunate than unfortunate I don’t live nearby.

If you jog to and from the donut store it becomes health food.

Yeah, I won’t be jogging the 300 miles to get to the one in the photo I posted.

Good thing that I didn't know about that place or that 10 mile drive for a dozen donuts would have been much longer.

Yes, but just think how healthy it would be!

Dare I ask the same thing about Sano?

Rats.

Much better than my response.

Ah well, this is why you're RB, guru of the game threads.

Of course I want everyone to be healthy. But I do think the Twins need this to see what Garver really is. The playing time is important both for the present and future. He's not looking good behind the plate, but is he making adjustments and getting better? If so, then it's a good sign.

Unfortunately, you don't learn to catch MLB baseball by sitting on the bench or playing in AAA.

Here's a box of assorted donuts. Which one are you grabbing first?
