Axshun Jaxshun Verified Member Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Bryan Sammons (--)DOB: 4/27/1995; Age: 22Positions: LHPBats: L, Throws: LHeight: 6'4", Weight: 235 lbsAcquired: Drafted in the 8th round in 2017Professional Experience: 1; Highest level: A (2017)ETA: 2020 Bryan Sammons was drafted in the 8th round of the 2017 draft by the Twins as a Senior from Western Carolina University. I want everyone to know that I will have a biased view on Bryan because he is my nephew. Thrylos provided the incentive for me to write this with his comments on rating Bryan the number 35 prospect in the organization. "The Wilmington, NC native have had an unremarkable College career until he appeared in the Cape Cod league the summer of 2016". I thought it would be helpful if I provided a little history of Bryan's accomplishments. First and probably foremost Bryan graduated from WCU with honors in Engineering Technology and the Southern Conference offered him graduate school scholarship. Some of the adjectives that come to mind when thinking of Bryan on the baseball field; durable, competitor, smart, humble. Bryan has never missed a start and I have never seen him rattled. You can could 100 pitches when you give Bryan the ball. Bryan has historically taken advantage of available opportunities. He wanted to be a starter in high school but it appeared that he would not be in the rotation (because other players threw harder)but injuries forced him into the rotation his junior year. He lost a game early his junior year but did not lose again in both his junior and senior years. He playedAmerican Legion in his junior and senior years except for losing only one game each year. In his senior year his loss was in the American Legion World Series. There were no earned runs in that WS game and there were no earned runs the entire season (after the 2nd start) and playoffs. He pitched a complete game shutout in the regional championship and was named MVP of the region. WCU does not come to mind when thinking of college baseball programs. The coach at WCU has more pitchers drafted than any other college coach in NC. This placed Bryan with the opportunity to learn and participate from the start. I still remember Bryan's first game as a freshman (watching simulation online). College baseball season opens in the middle of February, the first game was cancelled due to snow and was moved to Mississippi State who sells out every home game with enormous crowds of like 10,000.They were ranked 2nd in the country to start 2014 and were the college world series 2013 runners up. WCU was leading 3-0 going into the ninth and the starter was replaced. Two relievers quickly allowed 2 runs and had the tying run in scoring position. Coach brought in the freshman and Bryan got his first save. After his freshman year Bryan was named a Louisville Slugger All American.Over the years Bryan has given us may amazing stories like this. He had another amazing opportunity in 2016 when his coach got him a 7 day contract at the Cape Cod Summer League. He turned that 7 day contract to an entire summer season and placed in the rotation. Bryan was held back to pitch the championship game which they won. I think Bryan pitched 6 shutout innings. Returning to school he had an amazing senior season and set some marvelous records. Bryan stands 2nd in WCU history for innings pitched and strikeouts. He is also 8th in Southern Conference history for innings pitched and strikeouts. I noticed that number 9 for strikeouts pitched in the MLB last year. After the draft he briefly played with Elizabethton and finished the season.Last year he pitched over 160 innings with over 180 strikeouts. Bryan will be the starting pitcher for the Kernels opening day at Quad Cities. If you were to ask Bryan about baseball history he would tell you very little. When asked about pitching opening day he replied "it's just my turn to pitch".That maybe true but I don't see it that way. Wishing Bryan the best with his 2018 opportunities.

goulik Verified Member Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 Once again, I miss the "buy that guy a steak" button... Like is just not a strong enough word for this OP. Thank you for giving us the down low on Sammons.
Axshun Jaxshun Verified Member Posted April 6, 2018 Author Posted April 6, 2018 The Kernels won their opening game last night 2-0. Bryan started and lasted 4 innings, giving up 2 hits and no walks. He also struck out 6. I thought he looked sharp for the first game of the year.

jkcarew Verified Member Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 I only listened to one inning...worked ahead, plenty of swings and misses. Box score says the other innings must have been very similar. A nice way to start the campaign!

Guest Guests Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 Just a brutal night in CR Friday. Strong winds blowing in from CF. Colder than the 45 degrees the thermometer read. Sammons looked good and did what he needed to do, get through 5 innings and give them a chance. They just do anything against Clinton's pitching.
Axshun Jaxshun Verified Member Posted May 7, 2018 Author Posted May 7, 2018 Bryan had another good outing. He is currently 1st on the team in innings pitched and K's with a 1.17 WHIP. www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/minor-league/hard-luck-bryan-sammons-throws-well-for-cr-kernels-but-takes-loss-to-west-michigan-20180506
Axshun Jaxshun Verified Member Posted May 15, 2018 Author Posted May 15, 2018 Bryan had another solid outing with little run support losing to Bowling Green. He pitched 5.1 innings gave up 5 hits 3 walks and 1 run with 4 k's. He still leads the team in innings pitched and strikeouts and has an ERA of 2.76, WHIP of 1.23 both very respectable.

Squirrel Community Moderator Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 I thought he was on the DL with a sprained ankle? I must have him confused with someone else ... or it was very minor and he's already back.

beckmt Verified Member Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 Was at the game last night. He looked very good. Seemed to tire in the 8th, but finished the inning. Threw a lot of strikes and was seldom in trouble. Command will determine how far he goes. 90 - 91 on the fastball.
