Time to sign Dozier

To me it depends on the budget, and how they feel about their SP options in house right now.

If they are somehow (not sure how, but somehow) at their budget next year, I don't think you can extend him unless they somehow believe in their SP and RP options internally.

My assumption is they are losing 20 some million in payroll. That should buy them 1-2 RPs and most of a starter. If they can also extend Dozier and do that, then I probably do it. I don't love the idea, and I think they have other options, but it depends on how they want to spend their money next year.

Signing him, or not, is not just about signing him. He's one of 25-35 people in a portfolio of assets, and they need to make the decision with their budget and other options in mind, not just in a vacuum of his value relative to other 2B.

ha,, and I composed my answer based on that other comment, not sure what my brain was doing there!

I'm all for trying to win in 2018, and agree with your post on having to work within the budget.  Extending Dozier now and potentially giving him a raise on what he is due in 2018, eats into that budget - when you desperately need relievers and 1-2 starters.

I'd roll the dice and let it play out

Again, I feel this is worth repeating... I hope that Falvey channels what he's learned in Cleveland and has other players higher on the priority list for extensions.

Cleveland didn't get to the point where they're at today by extending players on the wrong side of 30. They got to this point by buying out a couple of FA years with their young players. Now they have some absolute steals because they had faith in their core. Jose Ramirez, Corey Kluber, Jason Kipnis, Michael Brantley were all in pre-arb years when they signed their extensions.

But the early extensions for 30 year olds have worked so well for the Twins and Glen Perkins / Phil Hughes!

Well, and acquiring/developing those players in the first place. :)

Kluber was 29 when Cleveland signed him to his extension. And he had already won a Cy Young award. The fact that it was "early" in terms of his career was more of an accident related to his late start. (Which also probably made him more willing to sign such a deal.)

Yeah that's for sure. And upon further review, Kluber was entering his Arb-2 season when he signed the extension. As far as the rest.... Jose Ramirez was a low-risk international signing that developed better than they probably imagined - signed the extension after his breakout pre-arb 2 season. Kipnis was a very late round draft pick that developed better than they probably imagined - signed his extension entering his pre-arb 3 season. Brantley was acquired via the CC Sabathia trade - signed his extension instead of discussing arbitration.

Ya, now that my brain is working, and I am listening less to this work meeting, I would not extend him. Let the contract play out.

Yeah, there shouldn't be any rush to extend him now.  If he was a couple of years younger, sure I'd entertain the idea, but not at 31.

As you said earlier, the money that would go to Dozier needs to be spent on pitching.

Extend a player who is still under contract through the end of next season?  Unless he is a franchise cornerstone that could be build around for years to come, I would ask why?

Did we learn nothing from Phil Hughes?  Or, Wild fans, Jason Pominville?

Locking up guys long-term is great.  Extending guys before their contract ends, only to have them hit the wall in performance with years to go, and now you've got contract millstones hanging around the franchise's head.

Let it play out, then go from there.

The same people not wanting to extend Dozier "on the wrong side of 30" don't want to name the players they are going to acquire with the saved money. Which FA pitcher is going to put us over the top? The one that won't be signed through the wrong side of 30? Why not address the 2B I named as being good on the wrong side of 30 (you can add Murphy to that list as well). Why expect less from Dozier? I don't hear anyone explaining how we'll make up the HR and ISO that will go with Dozier. Removing him from the lineup puts the Twins near the bottom in both categories.

A lot of people wanted to trade Dozier last off-season for a perennially injured AAA pitcher. I suspect the same folks are willing to go that route again (hence the "let the Twins win in 2018"). Some even want to risk losing him after next year without compensation (The QO system ain't what it used to be). Doesn't sound all that wise to me. And yes, I'm aware there are 25 players on a roster.
