Go get Verlander

earlier this week the mariners acquired a SP from the Cardinals, it was an example of a player moved that wasn't in the division.

There were several trades yesterday, for OFers, DH/OF types, C, SP..... the Twins did not acquire a player. That was the point of the post, quite literally. The Twins did nothing to get better.

I knkw he was traded. Why would you want him and that contract?

They probably should have added a bat, but outside of Verlander (which is unclear he'd waive a no trade clause) there wasn't a worthwhile pitcher moved.

I'm done, clearly pedantry is more important than the actual point of hte post.....players were traded, the Twins did nothing.

Actual players available are an important factor in a theoretical trade.

It would have been fun to get Upton or Verlander but they had no trade clauses so no way were they coming here when mote preferable destinations were available.

I would have had no interest in 3 1/2 more years of Mike Leake. He can't miss bats and gives up tons of contact in the NL. I don't want those kinds of pitchers.

Not sure who else would have been available. I might have been interested in a minor piece or two.

Have you seen Mike Leake pitch and looked at his contract? How does that make the Twins in any way better for now or the future?

I didn't expect them to get either Upton or Verlander but I don't think that's Mike's point. The Twins got no one, which is kind of disappointing.

Though I agree re: hard pass on Leake. The guy is owed $50m guaranteed. I wavered on Verlander but I'd pursue Verlander 11 times out of 10 before I went after Leake.

Trade for Verlander?  Seriously?  The Twins motto is "Ya never know".  M.O. is to build a cheap team that wins a few more than it loses--and sell that "hope".  Just like 2017.

On a somewhat related topic, does anyone else find it interesting the Royals didn't move anyone?

I mean, it's great for the rest of the ALC but they're 4.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot.

I'd be kinda pissed if I was a KCR fan right now. They wouldn't get much for any single player but moving a few guys might help speed up their inevitable rebuild.

Definitely a massive disappointment they added nothing. But it is important to see who moved, seemed like much less action this year than the usual August, probably because no teams really dropped out over the month and nothing of worth was getting through.

The front office screwed up big time by selling at the deadline, but they can't remedy it by trading for players that aren't available.

I would have held if I was them. Pretty much all in, better to go for it than try and recoup a minor piece or two.

Given how the team has played, I can't say they screwed up big time. They read the tea leaves the best they could and came up with an incorrect answer (the identical answer I came up with, for the record).

There's nothing wrong with making a mistake now and again (especially considering how I liked both returns the Twins received, mitigating the mistake). But I'm disappointed they didn't pivot again and pick up one or two players. I don't even really care who or where so much as making the attempt in the first place.

For all intents and purposes, their postseason chances are zero. Literally 1/3rd of the American League stands between them and the postseason.

It was time to punt and get what you can. Figure out which guys you're not considering for a QO and get what you can for them, just as the Tigers did with Upton. The Royals don't have the resources to hold on to players and hope for the best when their actual chances are so low.

But the "who" is important here. The best arm we have come up with (outside of Verlander) is Mike bleepin Leake. Arms weren't getting through this year.

Probably could/should have gotten a bat. But even that isn't a glaring need at the moment.

I'm not sure if the return they would have gotten would justify the fiasco of a partial sell. Too many moving parts in too short a time. Not even clear who would make it through, and only a salary dump would be really bad.

That's kinda my point. If no acceptable arms were available, go get a RH bat. I wasn't picky, I just wanted to see the team improve somewhere.

Well sure, but this thread wasn't "Go Get Leake" or "Go Get Another Arm or Bat"

Verlander would have been awesome. Don't think it was ever realistic that he would come here at this point.

The failure to get a rh bat is uninspiring to say the least.

Dunno, if I'm the Twins, I'd offer up an A ball flyer for Lorenzo Cain.

It's not a lot but it's more than the Royals will get a month from now.

He initially said no to Houston, too. When it came down to Houston or stay in Detroit, he said Houston.

He'd have most likely done the same here. The problem is, the Twins never asked.

I disagree strongly.  The decisions at the end of July served as "throwing down the gauntlet to the players". They responded by improving their play, eliminating mistakes, and pouncing on them from the opponents.

Boy, I don't see it that way. In Houston, Verlander is joining the best team in the AL and a market much larger than Minnesota.

I don't see him viewing Minnesota in the same light.

But you're right that the Twins should have been asking about it at the very least.

Are we sure the Twins never asked on Verlander?

Never mentioned in any trade talk, made no deal anywhere.

Infer what you will. I'm done giving the new front office the benefit of any doubt. They will have to earn it at this point, and they're starting from a big hole.

Fair position. All around.

Detroit would never have traded Verlander to the Twins, NO WAY, NO HOW.  Maybe if we took on 100% of his remaining salary they might have considered it, but i still doubt it.  Even still he's earning 28 million a year for the next three season 2018-2020.  Are you really sure you want to take on that kind of salary from a guy that has started to show cracks and is already 34 years old?  Just saying.
