After having accumulated several top prospects this year it makes sense that the White Sox would have to open some room on their 40-man roster or potentially leave some players vulnerable to the Rule V draft.

Trading 3 players from their 25-man roster helps give them room they are going to need.

Smart move.

On a positive note for us Twins fans, the Tigers look like they got a modest, at best, return for JD Martinez. I would be upset if I were a Tigers fan.

It's all trending positive for the Twins in the medium term. The Royals, Tigers and Whiteys will all be rebuilding for at least the next 2-3 years. Helps with the wild card too.

I'm not sure how I'd feel.

On the one hand, underwhelming return.

On the other hand, they got something, rather than nothing, for an impending FA.

Terrible return is what I would say. Worst farm system in the league in Arizona, and they can't even get one of the two legit prospects in the system in the deal...

For two months of a corner out fielder, of which numerous are available?

It really goes to show how depleted the market is going to be for rental bats. Last year Carlos Beltran got a decent haul. This year, not so much. It's going to be the year of the pitcher for this trade deadline.

Martinez was the clear top of the market. There's no reason that same deal isn't available July 31st. Hold out on him for the best deal available and see his value go up as lesser pieces go off the market.

Would it? Maybe arizona wanted a guy now, and they would have traded for someone else. Also, he left the game after his hand was hit by a pitch. Could have happened as a tiger....

Is Miguel Cabrera about to become an albatross?

Currently at .265, with 12 dingers and 45 rbis, .796 ops.

34 years old, 30 million per until 2023. Not very athletic, now a 1b dh.

Thoughts?

The Tigers are in big trouble unless he has a David Ortiz-esc bounce back at DH. That's a near impossible contract to trade.

I don't think much of the Sox' haul, at all.

As a Twins fan, every one of the Sox moves going back to the Sale trade delights me. I think this rebuild is going to put them, at best, back where they started.

Kung-Fu Panda is heading back to his old stomping grounds in San Francisco. Maybe he'll reclaim some of that old magic from 3 years ago which made him a fan favorite there.

With about 100MM to spend on free agents if they want, maybe more.

Trades like this are why the Yankees haven't had a loosing season since '95, and teams like the Twins can't put together a bullpen.

A few shiny trinkets for Robertson/Kahnle.  Highway robbery.

Good luck to the Sox with those trinkets.

The more I think about this trade the more masterful it seems from the Yankees perspective

1. They addressed a short term problem (Greg Bird surgery) with a short term fix (Frazier).

2. They addressed a long term need (the bullpen) by acquiring 5 years of cost controlled relief in Robertson and Kahnle.

3. They took what was widely rumored to be the Red Sox top trade target off the market (Frazier).

4. They offloaded an expensive underperforming veteran and freed a roster spot (Clippard).

5. They paid a ~#40 prospect and stuff.

Concur. Also, after losing Pineda for the season, they changed their strategy by building a super team bullpen to make up for that loss.

Fangraphs loves the acquisitions, where the Yankees now have the projected best WAR bullpen the rest of the season. The Twins have the 4th worst, just ahead of the Braves, Tigers, and White Sox.

.

No, the Yankees haven't had a losing season in 20+ years because they have incredible payroll advantages that no other team has (and PEDs, lots of PEDs).

btw, Ken Rosenthal is writing on FB now. A very good follow.

Very strange that Fox Sports.com moved to an all-video format and kicked him out. Not that I frequented Foxsports.com before to really care. Give me a quiet, video-free site to read articles.

How the hell is Rosenthal writing on facebook? I know he's still under contract with FOX but shouldn't someone have tried to get his talent to write for them?

it does seem hard to believe.

The Red Sox call up top prospect 3B Rafael Devers to fill the glaring hole left behind by Kung Fu Panda.  He's a top 20 prospect in the game on every list, and has less than 40 PA's at AAA before getting the call.
