Yeah, it's a weird thing. I have been to a lot of places in the U.S. via automobile. I am a big fan of geography, history and how other cultures operate, so I do a lot of research and studying as a hobby.

In the mid-80's there seemed to be a lot of disastrous passenger jet crashes. I was between the age of 8-12 and it had some kind of psychological effect on me.

I am hoping in the near future that I can face my fears and break the curse. I would really like to go to Spain and Argentina.

Good luck!

I can tell you with certainty that you would love Europe.

Do it. Life's too short to be afraid.

I fly all the time now, since I don't really have a home, per se. My wife and I have it down to a science. Not much bothers me anymore. I will say that airport lounges are worthwhile if you travel a lot, but I wouldn't buy access. Get a World Elite MasterCard or Visa Black/Ultimate. Or both.

I once made a connection in Atlanta in five minutes after a late flight from Augusta (sadly there for work not golf). Different terminals. Train pulled up with perfect timing.  Made it to the gate and only the gate attendent and the standby passenger were there. Gate attendant was even about to scan his boarding pass. Boy was he pissed. Wouldn't have made it if the last passenger to board hadn't had an issue with her carry on luggage (had a checked baggage tag on it apparently). That was my only experience in that airport and it sure was a positive one.

Passenger Cargo ships still exist. Looks like a cool way to travel, if you have the time.

Also I expect a one hour delay based on my expert look at the radar and guess skills.

Yeah, that would be my plan if I hit the lottery. :)

I don't like to fly, but that has more to do with the TSA drill than the actual flight. Although if and when possible, I prefer trains to other forms of long-distance travel.

I still don't think this game will be played tonight. Either a double header tomorrow, or later in the season when the Twins are here again. Although ... maybe it will just go unplayed if it doesn't matter.

I'm okay with driving, simply because of the flexibility. If one absolutely has to see the worlds largest collection of legumes, no problem.

I'm pretty much this way, too, re flying. Although less about the TSA drill itself than the masses who don't know the TSA drill and hold up the lines with their unintentional non-compliance. And I used to routinely take the train between Chicago and Minnesota (Winona) when my parents still lived there. Was great. Yeah, was a little longer than driving, but it was nice to be able to sit back and relax and let someone else do the driving, and dinner in the diner, nothing could be finer.

Hey, Bark!  I will encourage you to face your fear!  Relating to crashes in the 80's - our high school choir was coming back from Europe flying into Atlanta in the 80's and we almost collided with another plane - we had to dive down at the last second to avoid a collision.   Many did not want to take the 2nd leg of that flight back to New Orleans.   It didn't immediately bother me but seeing all the frightened classmates must have impacted me later because since that time I do get anxious flying, but I keep doing it.   I think technology has made flying very safe.  And a little alcohol doesn't hurt.

One unique flying story - My daughter had a seizure when we were driving home from vacation several years ago and it turned out to be caused by a brain tumor.  So she was immediately Careflighted by helicopter to Dallas and one parent was able to ride along - that was one interesting experience from the take-off and landing to seeing the city at night.   They gave me a helmet with microphone to wear so that we all could communicate in the helicopter.   And a very Happy ending - our amazing neurosurgeon was able to successfully remove the tumor and my daughter is in great health today.    That was about a $14K helicopter ride.

Thanks for sharing WaveDog. I am very glad you made it through the Atlanta almost disaster and I am very glad to hear your daughter is in great health.

I agree with it being safer because of modern technology based against 30 years ago. Phobia's can be a pain in the ass. I'll get there though. :)

I'll be there after Arrow. Although not sure where 'there' is, exactly. It must be a quantum thing.

And trust me, you shouldn't ever wish for that.

MLB.com has it as PPD.

I called it (like that was difficult to do, given the current weather here and what the radar says)

Yeah, i remember the Challenger about that time. The whole class was watching it.

I haven't been on a space shuttle since. Although i would claim it is for other reasons than fear.

As is my general avoidance of flying. I guess i'm not up to planning months in advance and otherwise am mildly set in my ways.

Well, here's to hoping we both get to ride together in a space shuttle in the future, travel to distant planets, meet fascinating and intelligent extraterrestrials and die from sickness from the stupid bacteria on their planets.
