The Twins have started making some releases, something that is never fun... The following players have been told that their time with the Twins is over within the last couple of days:

RHP Jim Miller

RHP Brandon Peterson

RHP Tyler Fox

RHP Zach Strecker

LHP Austin Tribby

OF Leandro Castro

OF JJ Fernandez

OF Roberto Gonzalez

That has to be one of the worst parts, if not the worst, of the job.  Needing to tell a young person that everything he has been working for up to that point in his life is now gone- that has to be the pits.

Today, the Twins released:

RHP Seth Rosin

RHP Confesor Lara

IF Chris Ibarra

1B Reynaldo Rodriguez

Again, no surprises, but remember also that the Twins still have to account for about 11-12 guys who need to report to minor league camp yet this week.

"Reds “leaning toward” retaining backstop Stuart Turner, whom it took from the Twins in the Rule 5 draft, per Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer (Twitter link). Turner would join Tucker Barnhart to comprise the Reds’ top two catchers, and they’d try to pass the out-of-options Rob Brantly through waivers"

Correct. The topic is covered and discussed further in the Stuart Turner thread.

Heartbreaking time for some, I saw a couple loading their cars today.  Acouple came out first from lunch yesterday and were just sitting on the bench. I asked where they opened up next week and he said "I don't know, I'm just trying to get on a team."

You're right nothing too surprising, but I think the next round of cuts might sting a little as a few of the lower level guys might be subjected to roster crunching...

A few more today:

C - Eddy Rodriguez, Dom Blanco

IF - Tom Belza

OF - Austin DIemer, Josh Romanski

RHP - Garrett Kelly,

LHP - Bo Hellquist

Still no real surprises.

Diemer is the only from these seven that was drafted by the Twins. Hellquist and Kelly signed as non-drafted guys after the draft last year. Blanco signed late last season after being released and played in the GCL. Belza and Romanski were indy guys brought in this spring. Eddy Rodriguez was just cut from big league camp on Thursday.

Not sure that it was mentioned previously, but DJ (aka Dalton) Hicks retired.  He did not come down to Fort Myers.

I noticed he wasn't around when I was in FtM and assumed something like this might have been the case. Too bad. DJ is a good dude. But it really takes someone with a special power bat to make it to the upper levels of minor league ball at 1B, much less the big leagues.

A bunch of minor league free agents and low-level guys. Surprised about Peterson. What is the reason, do you think? Also, waiting to see how catching breaks out. Imagine the Twins would like both Garver and Murphy to be starters, and I hope Garver is at Rochester. But backups are...? Kinda liked the idea of Rohfling and Rodriguez behind multi-position backups who can catch and probably DH at Rochester, which now has too many DH bats anyways.

It's a tough life to be a minor league free agent. But lots of Indy Ball leagues looking to fill their rosters!

I go to a few Miracle games a season, and sometimes the thought that these kids baseball careers are going to be coming to a close soon. It shows you how high the threshold to becoming a major league baseball player is.  Most of these kids were the best players on their teams since Little League, all-conference players, and the best or amongst the best players in their state during their careers.

Look at Austin Diemer.   He was a 2nd team California All-State, his conference MVP two years running, a D-1 player at a top level baseball school, and a major league baseball draft choice.  Luckily for Austin he also was great in the classroom so the end of this career just marks the beginning of another.

Good luck to all of our Twins Nation, from Ft Myers through Rochester to the Big Leagues.

Dalton Hicks has had a neck injury in the past that was quite serious. A bit before spring training, he re-aggravated it. Doctors weren't willing to say that it wasn't a life-threatening type of injury, so he decided to retire. Good guy. I wish him well.

Well, that REALLY sucks. I hope he lives a long healthy life and is able to get past this disappointment quickly. God Speed Dalton!
