Jurickson Profar

Jurickson Profar was the #1 prospect for 1 year, but look at the talent in the rankings behind him and compare that to when Buxton was #1 for 3 years. Profar was a great prospect, but Buxton was at a different level.

And 2 extra years of control is a huge factor in trades

Profar has done nothing of value on the field for 3 years. To say his value is similar to Byron Buxton's right now is ridiculous..

Profar "only" had 1 year as the top prospect because he made his major league debut at 19 yo. At the same age Buxton was still in A ball. The only difference in their results is that Buxton was allowed to play his natural position.

I will grant you the 2 extra years of control but even that is somewhat diminished because he is so young (because he debuted at 19yo) that an extension with Profar seems plausible.

If you want to claim that Buxton is worth slightly more than Profar I won't make a fuss but they are pretty damn close in value I believe. As always YMMV.

The question however is would you trade Buxton (since you think he's better then you don't have to throw in an A-ball flier) for Santana?

I wouldn't mind giving Profar a try at short, but I doubt a deal could be worked out. The problem is the Ranges want a return that values Profar as close to his past value as a prospect, while other teams look at Profar and see a guy with a significant injury history (and concerns about whether his shoulder allows him to play SS going forward) and no major league production. It's next to impossible to bridge that gap.

I could see a deal at the trade deadline once it becomes more clear what Profar's real value looks like (based on production, staying healthy, and showing if he can play short).

My main point was that Profar was #1 in a weak prospect list, while Buxton at the top of a strong list.

And wouldn't him being a free agent so young make him less likely to want to sign an extension? Also, I'm not claiming Buxton is worth slightly more than Profar, I'm saying he is worth much much more.

How do you think the Rangers view Gallo? I would like to swing something for Profar and Gallo for Santana/Gibson and a couple of our middle tier prospects. I'd be willing to part ways with our best vet pitchers to get those 2. I imagine they haven't given up hope on him yet, just curious on a Texas native's view. Thanks.

I'd want nothing to with Gallo. That K rate man... it's not getting any better.

Can you imagine Sano and Gallo batting 4th and 5th in the order? That would be both awesome and maddening.

Ditto, I also have a $500 bet with a buddy (Rangers Rube) on Gallo's career K rate: I took the over on 26%! I don't want to have to root for him to hit the under someday.

I think I speak for many of us when I say...that is one random bet.

Very.

Old buddy from college, we have been having the Gallo debate for years on end. We do random bets every once in awhile on obscure things:

For instance if trump isn't our next POTUS somehow I win $5,000

If johnnny Manziel AND Tim Tebow never start another game at QB I win $100

I did lose the "twins win more games then the royal bet" 3 years running now with him :(

Sorry for the delayed response - the Rangers view Gallo like Profar - highly rated prospects.  They are talking about both of them being in the mix of playing 1B/DH along with Ryan Rua.   Personally, I am skeptical of Gallo - yes he has raw power but so far he has struck out in over 50% of his mlb at-bats.  Although Chris Davis had a similar beginning and the Rangers gave up on him - traded him to Baltimore where he took off - so I am sure the Rangers will give him plenty of time.   I like Palka better than Gallo as a hitter.  Gallo can play 3B/1B.
