Meh...I liked Go Go as much as anyone when he was with the Twins but he's not getting any younger. We have plenty of (much younger) outfielders that we need to get figured out.

In fairness, no one is getting any younger ;-)

Thank goodness in the case of Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler.

Gomez really just had two good years.

He seems like a nice guy but he does have a temper and he doesn't always seem to be very bright.  But hey, that describes pretty much everybody.

Gomez will certainly land somewhere.  Whether or not he is good again and how long that lasts is anyone's guess.  The Astros will be paying the bulk of his salary so there is no visible reason why someone would not pick him up, even if just to work off the bench.

It was really like 3.5 good years (2012 until his trade from the Brewers). League average offensive player, who also plays a good CF, is easily "good." Like 3+ WAR full season pace.

Even with WAR, he had only two good years.  He was only a top defender for one year of those two.

3+ WAR full season pace doesn't count as "good"? Because Gomez did that in 2012 and in his time with the Brewers in 2015, in addition to his great 2013-2014 stretch. (He also had such a pace in 2011 although it was more defense with a below average bat, not unlike his 2008 with the Twins.)

If you want to claim that Gomez only had 2 great seasons, that would be accurate, although not particularly meaningful -- lots of good players don't have many/any great seasons. Still doesn't mean 3 WAR seasons on his resume don't count towards his good record.

He is obviously not playing well at the moment, but that shouldn't overly color our perception of his past solid seasons. If he was in the midst of a 3 WAR season right now, the discussion would probably be about what kind of nice FA payday he was going to get this winter, even after rejecting a QO. 3 WAR can be the mark of a good season/player.

I agree with you.  However, we should keep things in perspective.  Giving up Gomez wasn't like giving up David Ortiz.

Gomez probably has a little bit of good baseball left in him, but those peak years are gone.

Sure.  I actually have no regrets about swapping Gomez for Hardy (even if we could have done a better job of cultivating Gomez while he was here).  He's done well since then, but so has Hardy.
