MLB Midseason Prospect Rankings

Good to see Fernando Romero get some love for his great comeback season. He moved up 7 spots and I could see him as a top 5 prospect by next year if he continues to pitch well, as I'm sure he will also move up with his potential looking even better as well.

Romero definitely earned that spot, I thought it was strange that Wade and Jorge didn't move up though.

Agreed about Wade and Jorge. I have no idea why Wade is still ranked so low despite his productive season. As for Jorge, my best guess is those who do the MLB.com prospect ratings still might be focusing more on Jorge's disastrous first attempt at A ball and don't see him really improving since that season. Not that I am a scout or anything like that. Just my wild guess.

Should be higher on Twins List: Kirilloff (just 1 spot), Palka, Jorge, Garver, Wade.

Should be lower on Twins List: Stewart (1 spot), Rortvedt, Burdi, Reed, Thorpe.

Kirilloff and Rortvedt entered the list, so that plays into it. Also, stats aren't going to play much of a role is prospect rankings, though Wade and Jorge both have great stats. While we think Jorge may be a #3 type of starter, it's likely his lack of Ks have national people thinking more of a 4/5 starter. And, most still see Wade's upside as a fourth OF, though I think we think he could be more.

I am also a little surprised Lachlan Wells (who was #28) dropped out of the top 30 despite a 1.57 ERA, a healthy k rate, and a great walk rate. Only thing I guess is MLB.com sees shades of Tommy Milone and Liam Hendricks in Wells.

While I write/type that, I think they have Palka, Jorge and Wade way too low on their list, so I do completely agree.

Yeah, I have no idea why they have Walker ahead of Palka. They do basically the same things, except Palka does them better.

Interesting picture they chose for Ben Rortvedt. I had to question myself wondering if he was a switch hitter, so I don't know why they went with that one. I'm glad they seem to like him, but #10 seems too high.

Also, 2016 first round pick, Blake Rutherford, got ranked at #64. I was hoping Alex Krilloff would make this top 100, and with continued success in E-town, he should make some offseason lists I would think.

4 top 100 guys - two at AAA and one at AA - isn't too bad.  And they have some exciting young guys in the low minors.

I think a lot of the next 4 years success or failure will be determined from how Romero, Stewart, Gonsalves and Thorpe develop.  Those four are pretty big wild cards.

I guess mlb.com isn't quite ready to buy into the breakout season of Luis Arraez, as he wasn't in the top 30. I would assume this has mostly to do with his lack of defensive ability.

I know we have fun ripping on Tommy Milone, but he's going to make 8-figure money in his MLB career. Lachlan Wells would love to turn into Tommy Milone and anyone who has a potential to be a "Tommy Milone" should be in every teams top 30 list.

i'd be more excited about Polanco if there was a place for him in MN.......but as it is, I don't see them getting much value from him as long as Dozier and Sano are on the roster.

Also, is there any way you really think Jay is a Twin next year? That seems pretty unlikely, but not impossible, I guess.....

I didn't mean it to make fun of Milone or Wells. Sorry if it came out that way. I was only stating that because even in reading his scouting report it doesn't sound that they are too excited about Wells. Honestly I like to be over optimistic when a prospect does well that they will do well in the majors. But, for Wells to be successful at his listed height (5'8"), I can see that plus his lack of fastball, average change and curve as something against Wells as a good prospect.

For me, the thinking is whenever a prospect starts a season in AA, there's a good chance that he plays in the MLB at some point that year, depending in their performance of course.

Ya, after posting that, I started to reconsider.

Yeah, that was my thought.  And he could be on a innings limit so maybe he makes 17 starts for AA and then pitches out of the bullpen for 2 months to end the season, like Santana and Liriano?  But it depends on how he pitches.  If he has a 6.00 ERA, it doesn't matter.

I don't think he's 5'8 anymore. I actually saw it posted on here a few weeks ago that he's now around 6' or 6'1.

Seth would probably know.

Ok, that was what MLB.com said. They might be behind in updating his height and weight. I still think he is intreguing at the least. Only 19 and through 6 A ball starts owning a 1.57 ERA is pretty good. Perhaps he'll look like a better prospect after the season is over and the scouts get more of a chance to scout him.

Since Mejia was around #10 on the Giants list, he will probably be around #15 for the Twins.  Giants system is weaker than the Twins.

He was 7th on mlb pipeline.

I'd guess the same publication slots him in at 10 here, right between Chargois and Rortvedt.

Still a very good get for the Twins, you can never have enough starting pitching

Much better guess than mine!
