That includes Carl and now his kids.Carl gutted the payroll, tried contracting the team, tried selling them to Don Beaver, and used a kid with cancer in an attempt to get a taxpayer funded stadium all while Eloise was still very much alive.
nokomismod Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Carl would have spent more if he had lived to see the opening of Target Field. Actually, Twins payroll increased steadily throughout the 2000s as the team improved and as Target Field approached, all while Carl was still alive. It's not like the post-2009 Twins have aggressively stretched their budget for payroll, given the new stadium. I suspect payroll would have proceed exactly the same under Carl or Jim.You may be right, but Carl got pretty weird there starting in the late 90's with threatening to move or contract...or maybe that was Jim starting to take over the reigns. Either way, I do not think the current problem is related to Jim not wanting to pay for talent, but rather Terry Ryan making poor decisions.
Comrade Bork Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Something's gotta give. They might be feeling left out by not making any big moves like every other team in the area
Richie the Rally Goat Community Moderator Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 It may not be about money but rather the opportunity to build his own successful organization. Hard to know how much that matters to him. I think it will definitely depend on if the Cubs with the WS or not. Also, the Twins have to be a fairly attractive location for a potential GM: good farm system, weak division, low expectations. I'm not sure there is an obvious "I'll wait for something better to open up" option on the horizon.not certain ownership is on the plus side of the ledger here... And that's a pretty big item on the list
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 IMO, if I were an executive pospect, I would view the Twins job as an exciting opportunity. I would be coming over to run a team that had one of the best facilities in all of baseball, one of the stronger milb systems around, and one of the best milb/ST facilities in Ft Myers.
jimmer Verified Member Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 I think the reputation of our strong farm system is likely taking a major hit based on results at the MLB level. As far as the two facilities, do we have to stretch that far to make the job appealing?
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Ugh, hopefully Souhan is less plugged in than Ruesse. In an article today, Souhan all but guarantees that Ryan won't step down, that he'd have to be fired. Says this time is different than last time because last time he left when they were winning and he is too loyal to his people to risk them losing their jobs. I'm having a hard time seeing a path to success for this club I have zero faith that Ryan is still capable.
