And with that I now know two Manfred Mann songs, and both are covers.

Agree with your first point so, in an attempt to put together a sem-focused list... how about top 5 covers?

Mine would be

5. Joe Cocker- Feelin Alright

4. Metallica- Whisky in the Jar

3. Rapeman- Just Got Paid Today

2. Nirvana- The Man Who Sold the World

1. Manfred Mann- Blinded by the Light

10. Got to get you Into my Life- Earth Wind and Fire

9. Redemption Song- Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash

8. All Along the Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix

7. Little Red Rooster- Rolling Stones

6. Viva Las Vegas- Dead Kennedys

5. A Little Help From My Friends- Joe Cocker

4. Killing Me Softly- The Fugees

3. Proud Mary- Ike and Tina Turner

2, What's so funny bout Peace Love and Understanding- Elvis Costello

1. Respect- Aretha Franklin

Yeah but its always slightly disappointing to hear that a song you really like wasn't an original.

I can't even find the original Phil Medley version of Twist and Shout, not on YT anyways.

Two of my favorite songs of all time ... 'Over the Rainbow' and 'La Vie en Rose' ... I think are timeless songs. And I love the various covers and interpretations of them. I don't mind covers as long as whoever does the cover does it 'their way.' While the song might not be original, the performance can be.

Well, this is fun, for me anyways.

Another song I had no idea wasn't original.

No cover will ever surpass "Respect" though. Possibly the greatest song of all time (Aretha's version, that is).

There are some songs that, when re-done, seem to have a whole different meaning.

Try 'Girls just want to have fun'  by Greg Laswell, as opposed to Cindi Lauper.

Try 'Red Dirt Road', by Sugarland instead of Brooks and Dunn.

Little known fact and although I far prefer the Springsteen version, The Manfred Mann version of Blinded by the Light is Springsteen's only Number 1 song as a songwriter.

This thread is really great. Thanks again to all, and special thanks for the links. Too kind, much appreciated.

Think I'll hit up some Joe Cocker "Feelin Allright" now.

I agree these songs are great on their own. I guess it just seems kinda, unfair, when the cover becomes more well known than the original. Case in point, Twist and Shout. "Disappointing" wasn't the right word there.

Heh ... I feel like the classical world must be outrageously unjust if this is the case. I mean, nobody regrets the fact that Pablo Casals rediscovered the Bach cello suites rather than them being famous for Bach's legendary performances of them ... lol ... jk. :) But some of these songs just don't deserve to be known for their original versions, and an outstanding cover is better than nothing!

For covers, I love devo's covers of working in a coal mine, and satisfaction. Love satisfaction. And who can forget hurt, covered by Johnny Cash.

I love a good cover, but that's one of those moments when you really can't call it a cover. Johnny completely took that song to another dimension. In 100% seriousness, the first time I heard that song, I cried. It was that intense.

Okay ... I actually don't have a decisive answer to the question I'm about to present (it's Hrb's idea, but I'm curious to know what other people have to say), but if you could be considered the best performer of any three pieces of music on your own instrument, what would they be?

I'm tempted to go with overplayed pieces, but I have a feeling people would be emotionally attached to other recordings of those, so I don't know ... it'd be nice to bring up some underrated solos. The bummer thing is, for as much hype as the flute gets, it has a pretty minimal repertoire. Three is a hard number to go with unless you're doing concertos, too - I can't imagine people going, "Oh yeah, Always is the best at the Sonata no. 5 in E minor." I'd prefer "Always is the best at the Bach flute sonatas."

But my current (and very flexible) list is:

Concerto in D minor - Bernhard Molique

Concierto pastoral - Joaquín Rodrigo

Carnevale di Venezia - Giulio Briccialdi

I wanted to go with conducted pieces, but according to Hrb, that's not an option. Sigh ...

Oh, and speaking of jazz, I'm a big fan of Pink Martini.

I see you stole my idea, but at least you gave me credit.

My current list would be:

Suite for Solo Cello No. 4 in E flat major - J.S. Bach

Cello Sonata in A minor - Edvard Grieg

Symphony Concerto in E minor - Sergei Prokofiev

Woah woah woah I missed the top 10 songs list?! I shouldn't have went to happy hour Friday afternoon... No particular order for these sweet deep jams....

Fleetwood Mac - Never Going Back Again

Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun

Kings of Leon - Arizona

Queens of the Stone Age - Go with the Flow

Zac Brown Band - Colder Weather

Weezer - Undone (The Sweater Song)

Incubus - Nice to Know You

George Michael - Careless Whisper
Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise (AKA my walk up and relief pitcher song in high school baseball)

Careless Whisper? Really? I'm not sure why I find that surprising.

Was trying to think what some of my 'guilty pleasure' listening might be, but the one tune I would never turn off or skip over is 'Walking On Sunshine.'

I actually was going to put "Who Wants to Live Forever" on my list instead of "Bohemian Rhapsody," but Craig posted his list while I was still working on mine, so I switched to the norm because I didn't want to come across as non-conformist like everyone else. ;)

I can switch to Fire and Rain - JT if you want to change guilt-free.

If we're talking guilty pleasures.....

Britney Spears - Criminal

England Dan & John Ford Coley - I'd really love to see you tonight

Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much

Jennifer Paige - Crush

Madonna - La Isla Bonita

Really anything from the 80's... I have a soft spot for pop music during that decade..

I assume Wham was probably a last cut then? :)

No judgment.

Wham was in the top 3 of last cuts, North. Unfortunately they were behind Olivia Newton and The Weather Girls on my all-time song list...
