Plus isn't he a veteran who does not have that many chances left to prove he has what it takes?

I believe you're correct. My opinion is that such mistakes loom much larger for someone like Benson versus someone like Polanco.

Wow.  Just saw that highlight.  Wow.  The guy has persevered through a lot, and you wanna cheer for him, but.... wow.

No excuse for that... None. I don't care if it's spring training.

And... And... What was Molly watching?

He good job patted Benson on the backside when he returned to the dugout.

Can this highlight be found anywhere online? Missed it as I was flipping back and forth between the Wild game last night.

"Twins rotation candidate pleased with outing overall" - About Ricky Nolasco... Really?

http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/166151096/twins-ricky-nolasco-makes-spring-debut

"I felt good," Nolasco said. "My arm felt good. Everything felt good body-wise. The ball was coming out decent. So, I'll try to build it up from there. I was just rushing a little bit. But I just want to be healthy this spring and see what happens."

The team looks decent through 2 games. I'm not ready to cut Nolasco quite yet after one bad outing. A lot of pitchers are going to be victimized by having Sano trudging around taking horrible angles in the OF until they pull the plug on that fiasco. It was a hard hit ball but hey, its the major leagues, it won't be the first one he's going to see. A professional outfielder makes that catch and minimizes the damage. Terry Ryan's disdain for defense was really on parade last night.

I absolutely could not believe it. He literally lost us the game by not hustling. More disturbing was that he was not immediately confronted about it upon returning to the dugout. It's a big deal. Things like this need to be nipped in the bud now.

I agree it was bad but shouldn't Beresford have been in his line of sight, telling him to slide?

It was a bad play all around but I'm not sure 100% of the blame falls at Benson's feet. Most of it, yes... But not all of it.

Pitchers could not care less if they give up runs in their first spring training appearance (and neither should we).  I have 0 problem with that quote... you can be concerned if its March 30th and he's getting shelled consistently.

I really hope Molitor was checking his cell phone and missed it because that pat on the back needs to be retracted this morning.

Beresford... Should be attempting to communicate something but getting line of sight that quickly would have been tough from the third base side on a grounder to 2B.

Not with a bang, but with a wimper, eh?

Perhpas they don't want to push everything at full speed quite yet?

Anyway, another day, another game, and maybe new things to care about.

Ran into ol' friends instead of following the game. Sorry.

I could give a crap about Benson getting fooled into thinking the 2nd baseman wasn't coming home with the throw.  It was a fluke, and not likely to be repeated.  It's the kind of mental mistake that has no bearing on anything.

Watching Rogers give up ropes (esp to LH hitters) was a lot more concerning to me.  This is someone often pointed to as a potential bullpen piece.

It's only the first outing of spring, so it's not a huge deal either, but in the long run, of way more importance than Benson's jog to home.

The majority of the fault definitely lies with Benson but Beresford didn't move. To me, that's an equally horrible breakdown of fundamental baseball.

Benson's loafing had more of an in-game impact but Beresford standing there was equally egregious in my eyes. In a bases loaded situation, the on-deck hitter needs to be ready to move on contact and assist the runner as much as possible. It's part of the team game.

Maybe but you are Joe Benson and you need a job and it's the 9th inning and you are down a run.

Brian Dozier has a job guaranteed and he pushed for a lead off triple in the 1st inning.

And those people in the stands paid money to watch.

That effort bugs me to the bone.

Weren't the Twins in the 3b dugout?  Beresford doesn't have time to get to the first base side on a ground ball to the second baseman.  Besides which, Benson needs no help on that play, he just needs to run.

He let up when he though the second baseman wasn't coming home with the throw.  A mistake, but not likely to be repeated, and not something he needed Beresford's help on.  The on deck hitter can help when a throw is coming in from behind the runner and doesn't know if he needs to slide, or if so, on which side of the plate.  Not on an infield groundball force situation.

That's fair. Benson should have been running hard, the Beresford thing just bugged me. I don't like much of the idolization of Tom Kelly but man, we didn't see much of that under his watch (either Benson or Beresford).

OK but with that attitude I can no longer let you coach my team.

However... I still they think you are a good dude so I'll let you be the traveling secretary or something.

If you let me be the GM, the coach won't be worrying about either player. ;)
