Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Anyone have any experience with outside sales? I have a pretty good opportunity right now and just looking for feedback.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 cold call, or not cold call? I hated cold call sales, but as I'm older now, I think I could do it. Not cold call, most of the people I know like the job and the sometimes freedom they have.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Kind of cold call. A lot of the customers already use the product. The company is just trying to expand its market share. So some might be cold calls, others not.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 What specific industry? I'm in outside ad sales, sales can be a bit of a grind at times but you absolutely can't argue with the ability to make some of the most amount of money sans having a P.H.D or some high up legal position etc. Plus typically it's all about results so you can work you way up a corporate ladder much quicker then nearly every other type of job. Plus, you have the most freedom in terms of hours typically and vacation time. As long as you are a people person, have a decent product, decent boss and have a good comp structure go for it.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 The product is what it's all about. If you have something you would buy and are excited (or even moderately interested in) to get to the hands of potential customers, you can do well. Others may be able to sell something they're not 100% behind, but that's definitely not me, and it's been one of the reasons I went into social work in spite of a marketing degree and good sales experience in early work.

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Author Posted October 21, 2015 Product is specialty lubricants. I use it now and like it. The company is expanding and wants to increase market share in my field. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it, just waiting on an offer. Plus, it will give me an opportunity to utilize my undeniable persuasion skills?

ashbury Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Astroglide eh?If you take this job, Smerf, get ready for the jokes. Get ready for lots and lots of jokes. People standing in line, to give you the jokes. People standing in line, to get into the joke-giving line, to give you the jokes.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Product is specialty lubricants.I read this line and thought to myself 'Okay, which TD posters won't be able to resist this.' See the two posts above. The exact two posters I thought would be the first and quickest to chime in because they wouldn't be able to resist. Ash and Dave ... two peas in a pod.
ashbury Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I rib someone about taking the low road. You rib two people about taking the low road. Welcome to another (dare I say finer?) pod!
